Been watching for 10 mins and it's already great - this first family though... the woman doesn't so much have a cleaning problem... if she asked us lot we would tell her she had a DH Problem

The first episode made me rage. He works 60 hours a week plus weekends and he comes home and bitches about the place not being tidy? She's stuck in the house with two toddlers one of whom is breastfeeding!

And the happy ending is apparently that now the house is clean and she does the laundry again so he comes home to a tidy house. Win-win for him, I'd say. Hmm

Coppermine · 08/01/2019 22:27

I've not read the book (yet) and watched a few of these. I assume there is stuff missing/unexplained so people still buy the book?

I actually like how the homes (ones I've seen so far) aren't too cluttered/major hoarding. Feels more like what many peoples homes are like most the time so I can relate to it. Whereas the extreme hoarding ones are interesting to watch but I don't take much out of them for myself.

I like the nice easy practical tips which I've already started implementing. The 'does it bring you joy' is such a simple question and works for me, I've already filled a couple of bags with items I had originally struggled with getting rid of before hand 'incase I need it one day'.

And a couple of drawers have had the konmarie folding treatment. It does work. Will be interesting to see if I keep it up though!

I also watched one episode of consumed, the one with Jen and Tyler (cats in the bedroom). I forget the presenter name but whilst I understand her process, I don't think it fixes the long term issues. Jen really needs some therapy to resolve her childhood problems. within 3 months the cats were back in the bedroom (being trained to use the toilet). I expect a year down the line the house will be headed towards its original state.

BartonHollow · 08/01/2019 22:54

Yes Jen on Consumed and another The Tupperware lady needed the help of course but they needed the help after 12 months consistent behavioural therapy, because the problems in both cases were mental health related, both were borderline sectionable I thought

Whereas Tidying Up is just disorganised people.

Calvinsmam · 08/01/2019 22:58

He was awful!!!

The way we had a problem with her getting someone in to do the laundry because he thought she should be doing it. What a colossal twat.
She seemed like she’d had all the joy sucked from her marrow.

Calvinsmam · 08/01/2019 23:00

I kon maried my house about four months ago and my drawers are still folded that way.
I have to admit my cupboards are getting a bit full of nice empty boxes ‘that might be useful in the future’ though.

riotlady · 08/01/2019 23:08

I thought Marie Kondo sounded a bit nutty based on things that I’d read (eg crying over the best way to store bags) but she comes across well in this, very sweet

Calvinsmam · 08/01/2019 23:10

I think she’s sweet but irritating.

I like watching her but only in small doses and I wouldn’t be able to go on holiday or spend any real time with her.

shpoot · 08/01/2019 23:54

Quick Q. Do you fold/roll and then keep them in little boxes in the drawers? I'm going to do it!

Calvinsmam · 08/01/2019 23:56

I just keep them in my drawers I haven’t done my underwear yet but I have some little boxes that I might put them into my drawers in.
I feel creepy doing that strokey foldy thing with my knickers though.

glamorousgrandmother · 10/01/2019 19:48

The folding thing is really useful as you can see everything at a glance rather than having to scrabble through the drawer. I don't go as far as thanking my old t shirts before I throw them out but I find the concept quite useful. My house is already quite minimalist compared to some of those houses though.

I think the problem with this is that MK does not do much. She justs pops in and has a look while the home owners are the stars of the show. She does not interact well because of the language barrier imo. I know she has an interpreter but that always sets her at one remove, the same with the subtitles.

IamIwas · 10/01/2019 20:01

I have watched four episodes and I am not overkeen on the show. I agree that she doesn’t seem to do much. I prefer the book.

Having said that it must have had some effect as I have sorted two black bin bags of underwear that has been in the bottom of a cupboard since I moved a year ago and it is all neatly folded in little boxes.

HollowTalk · 20/01/2019 22:22

I've just watched a couple of these and think the language barrier really creates a problem. Also as a PP said, she doesn't tackle paperwork at all - I'm sure the empty nester couple would have had paperwork that was decades old. She doesn't (in the TV programme) suggest any method for keeping records of bills etc.

JudgeRulesNutterButter · 21/01/2019 23:09

I love how the little girl in the first episode is totally in love with MK from the start... “I want to go to you” and every time MK walks in she seems to end up carrying her Grin

SchadenfreudePersonified · 22/01/2019 22:11

Thanks for the heads up - I'll have a peep at this tomorrow.
