Anyone watching? I like Rupert Grint in this.

Oh I’m getting worried now. Was going to watch last night’s just before tonight’s.

I love Agatha Christie - books first, then TV - but Suchet was such a perfect Poirot for me.

I don’t mind a bit of artistic licence, but this sounds so far off they may as well have called it something completely different.

MeOldChina · 27/12/2018 17:04

I thought it was good in it's own right, though I have not read ABC before.

I do read Agatha Christie and love the old charm, as well as Suchet's portrayal. I agree that if they want it with a twist, maybe change the time period etc, a bit like Pride and Prejudice/ Bridget Jones.

GrandmaSteglitszch · 27/12/2018 17:07

I've abandoned thinking of it as Poirot and am watching it as a completely separate type of story.

MrsChollySawcutt · 27/12/2018 17:14

Gave up on ABC Murders, won't be watching parts 2 and 3.

Now watching Agatha and the Truth of Murder. Not a proper Agatha Christie but a much better setup and example of her genre.

Sarah Phelps is an arrogant twit.

Not liking her adapatations isn't manufactured outrage - it's not liking them.

If she wants to write period noir perhaps she could try coming up with an original idea of her own rather than piggybacking on Christie's ideas.

GrandmaSteglitszch · 27/12/2018 17:29

Rewriting Poirot as a charlatan and cheap entertainer who’s a joke at Scotland Yard just ruins the character.

But is that actually true, or has the nasty new detective got it all wrong?

derxa · 27/12/2018 17:49

Why are the people of today always trying to use the written works of dead people for their own purpose? Go write your own books, stories and plays, and leave the dead alone. You will never achieve what they have achieved even by preying on their works I found this in the comments section of a DM article.

RustyBear · 27/12/2018 18:09

Well, according to the Radio Times, the next Christie adaptation (Death Comes As The End) won’t be by Sarah Phelps, but Vanity Fair screenwriter Gwyneth Hughes, so I’m hoping for something better. Though, actually DCATE could be rather good in a darker mood. www.radiotimes.com/news/tv/2018-12-27/book-adaptations-2019-movies-tv-shows/

JassyRadlett · 27/12/2018 18:24

But is that actually true, or has the nasty new detective got it all wrong?

Hopefully wrong, but the idea that no one in Belgium has heard of him is bizarre. And Poirot definitely accepted the accusation that he ran ‘murder parties’ for the rich. Which the real Poirot... no.

GrandmaSteglitszch · 27/12/2018 20:08

How do we know, JassyRadlett? Just because it wasn't mentioned in the books doesn't mean it didn't happen.......

Clawdy · 27/12/2018 20:32

Oh yes, it does mean exactly that!

Davros · 27/12/2018 20:48

I was responding to Davros’s post which suggested that there were anachronistic references to “modern attitudes to immigration”.
I didn't express it very well. I don't mean "modern attitudes" really, just any attitudes as it's not in the book and we are being lectured to. No one can deny the rise of Fascism at that time and the facist incidents at that time. But how do these accurate issues have anything to do with a Poirot story that does not feature these issues? We are being told what to think by the BBC imo

Pilcrow · 27/12/2018 20:53

Gosh, Marguerita, that RT article is really annoying!

And if you're going to complain about having to squeeze out a three-hour drama from a short book, then why not choose a long book rather than muck about with something that can't bear the weight of an overlong adaptation? Hmm

Talk about cart before horse...

rslsys · 27/12/2018 21:00

Keep waiting for Marvin to get the pig out . . .

Magicpaintbrush · 27/12/2018 21:12

I knew as soon as I saw who was adapting this book for the bbc that she would mess around with it and change loads of things for no good reason - why would anybody have the front to think they can better Agatha Christie? Poirot is totally miscast, he is supposed to be a little man, very particular etc there is no way, for example, Poirot would have left all of that messy beard dye in the sink, his character is too tidy and particular for sloppiness like that.

Rupert Grint was good though.

topcat2014 · 27/12/2018 21:23

See George from poldar k is weasel in this too

KenDoddsDadsDog · 27/12/2018 21:31

Rupert Grint is like a Bugsy Malone child detective .

percheron67 · 27/12/2018 21:32

Dull and boring. Why do people want to change a perfectly good story just to satisfy their vanity.

Notonthestairs · 27/12/2018 21:38

I think I must be a heathen because I'm quite enjoying it Blush

longwayoff · 27/12/2018 21:38

Yukk. That was repulsive. I don't recall Mrs C writing any S&M into her stories.

xsquared · 27/12/2018 21:41

I switched off when Lily started walking on Cust's back. WTF.

Hepzibar · 27/12/2018 21:41

John Malkovich is just continuing the role of Pascal Sauvage, using same accent. Johnny English and Bough will drop in soon.

Encyclo · 27/12/2018 21:53

Looks like Rab C. Nesbitt is about to cark it

Encyclo · 27/12/2018 21:55

Oops wrong guy

Diorissimo1985 · 27/12/2018 21:57
