Yes, let's lay on the guilt for mums at Christmas... Hmm

Anyone else feel uncomfortable with this?

OP posts:
FrazzyAndFrumpled · 10/12/2018 17:35

I agree, massive guilt trip for working mums!

AgnesNaismith · 10/12/2018 17:39

Horrible advert, wankers.

WhoTookTheChristmasCookie · 10/12/2018 17:44

Never liked the BBC anyway; find the organisation abhorrent after watching that.

Let's hope they give all their female employees plenty of paid leave so they can spend time with family over Christmas and throughout the rest of the year also- you know, to avoid situations like this.
Doubt it though.

Wankers.

WhoTookTheChristmasCookie · 10/12/2018 17:47

Let's not forget either that last year it was a cartoon single dad that got it in the neck with not paying attention to his daughters dancing for the talent show.

He came out looking like a star though, knowing all the steps and helping her when she got stage-fright.

This mum works, has kids, runs the house while dad sits there doing fuck all; but of course the guilt sits on her shoulders.

Infuriating.

saltymofo · 10/12/2018 17:54

It's dreadful and makes me angry.

What about dad, wtf does he do.

And the reality is your teenagers disappear to their rooms/PlayStation etc as soon as everyone gets in if an evening and you have to bribe them with cake/chocolate/mince pies to actually come and even watch TV for half an hour with you.

diddl · 10/12/2018 19:33

I like the idea behind the teen wanting to spend time with his mum.

Perhaps the dad is a sahd so always available?

What time would a light switch on be though & why was he in his uniform?

surferjet · 10/12/2018 19:36

I think it’s lovely.
Makes you think about what’s really important.

NachosPlease · 10/12/2018 19:39

I cried when I saw her computer screen with her son as a little boy on because my DS is four and currently thinks I’m ace, I keep thinking he won’t always want to be around me like he does now!

Hadn’t even thought of the working mum/guilt angle. That has rather soured it for me.

PhaedrasChocolate · 10/12/2018 19:41

I'm in the unfortunate position of working evenings and nights, so my time off is great for spending time with 13yr old D's - except now he doesn't want to, he just wants to be in his room.

I'm not going to watch the advert, I've felt like crap for years because I've always had to work, I just don't need to see it.

HexagonalBattenburg · 10/12/2018 21:32

It pissed me off with the judgement against mothers and not bloody men angle. Plus the average teenager only seems to emerge from their bedroom to want food, money or taxi services half of the time anyway and being seen spending family time with parents would cause them to shrivel up and die of embarrassment.

RebelWitchFace · 10/12/2018 21:55

Makes you think about what’s really important

How many times do you actually forget?

diddl · 11/12/2018 08:48

"Makes you think about what’s really important"

Working to keep a roof over your heads & paying the bills?

Hopefully she'll get time off at Christmas & they can do stuff together then!

Would have thought that he'd be at the pier with his mates anyway!

mrsoutnumbered · 11/12/2018 12:48

This isn't believable simply because the mum has an office job and lives in Norfolk! There are no jobs there! 😂

likablum · 17/12/2018 20:45

Sorry to reignite this debate.....dislike the advert and agree re it's inherent sexism......Someone today told me they thought the ad was unrealistic as at the end the teenage boy cosies up with his mum in public and that no teen boy would ever do this.....and that just upset me even more....that's not true is it?? I'll still be able to cuddle them in 10 yrs time, won't I??

ikltownofboothlehem · 17/12/2018 21:41

DS is 13 and still loves cuddles & kisses. Even in public / in front of his friends. Smile

likablum · 18/12/2018 17:48

Ah thank you that is reassuring!! I really hope and pray my boys are the same.

Loopytiles · 19/12/2018 23:40

V annoying ad. Was the teen bunking off school? Implied that this was because his Mum may not be able to do something that evening?

Urgh.

zizza · 20/12/2018 22:59

I'm another one in the minority (on here anyway) - I really like it.

Loopytiles · 21/12/2018 08:14

Why?

ssd · 22/12/2018 19:20

I like it and it's hit a nerve with many mums for a reason

Spend time with your kids, remember what's important

Clionba · 23/12/2018 18:29

I really dislike it. Him truanting is not her fault for working.

RebelWitchFace · 23/12/2018 19:09

@ssd ODFOD.

ginyogarepeat · 23/12/2018 19:30

The reality is that it's mostly only mums who do feel (rightly or wrongly) guilty about work/life balance, and many wish they could spend more time with their kids. I liked the ad, hit home to me how kids need that time spent with them, even when teens. I think it's hit a nerve for many, hence the controversy.

ssd · 24/12/2018 23:54

yes, teens need time with their mums just as much as toddlers do

and their dads too of course, but thats not what this trailer is about

MrsFezziwig · 25/12/2018 00:09

I’m not in that situation so it doesn’t particularly affect me on a personal level, but what on earth is it supposed to be advertising?
