Did anyone watch it ?

SamanthaJayne4 · 28/11/2018 23:33

Yes, I did. We are quite spoilt for good dramas at the moment. Unusual leading up to Xmas!

beanaseireann · 28/11/2018 23:35

What did you think?

OP posts:
SamanthaJayne4 · 29/11/2018 00:45

Seems like only we watched it! I thought it was very good. I wonder if Liam will let Elizabeth down. He might only want the gold.

Tartyflette · 29/11/2018 01:36

Yes, I watched it and enjoyed it much more than the other current BBC drama, Mrs Wilson.
But it's only fair to point out that it has the advantage of Jamie Dornan in it, and quite a steamy scene too....
I thought Matthew Rhys was excellent, playing a complex character. I'm not quite sure if anyone is quite what they seem. Looking forward to next week's episode.

Dulra · 29/11/2018 06:36

Yes I watched it really enjoyed it. Setting and atmosphere is stunning. I think the acting is also superb. It aired on irish television on sunday night and some people who had watched it thought it was quite slow but I didn't find that at all.

Don't trust liam at all SamanthaJayne4 not sure what made her fall for him Hmm

It is set at an interesting time in irish history as we begin to get galvsnised to start fighting for our independence. Looking forward to next week

fairislecable · 29/11/2018 12:05

I really liked it the setting and cinematography were truly beautiful,

I usually hate sex scenes but even that was very tasteful. I do have a problem in that Dornan played the part of a murderer in another drama, and I keep looking into his eyes and wondering if there is evil behind such a gorgeous facade.

MinesaPinot · 29/11/2018 13:18

I taped it because we are binge watching Series 3 of The Last Kingdom on Netflix.

I'm glad to hear that you all thought it was worth seeing. I am looking forward to it.

MargoLovebutter · 29/11/2018 14:15

Watched it and thought it was beautifully filmed.

Not sure I caught all the dialogue properly as the voices were quite soft (or I'm a deaf old gimmer).

SealSong · 29/11/2018 14:26

Watched it and liked it, I like how the storyline started to make some sense towards the end of the episode. Looking forward to the next episode.

MinisterforCheekyFuckery · 29/11/2018 17:31

I've just watched this on catch up. I liked it too, it was beautifully shot. Matthew Rhys stole the show I thought.

Do you mean The Fall? I really fancied him in that even though he was a murdering psychopath but haven't fancied him in anything I've seen him in since. There must be something wrong with me! Confused

Looking forward to the next episode.

Cocolepew · 29/11/2018 22:41

I thought it was great, beautifully shot. Don't trust anyone in it atm.
The mum in it was one of Jamies victims in The Fall.
Jamie Dornan is very easy on the eye.

fairislecable · 30/11/2018 17:59

Yes that was it The Fall - I felt very weird being attracted to such an evil monster.

placemats · 30/11/2018 18:04

I really enjoyed watching this (I always have subtitles on). I've been to all the locations before, but Springhill House is gorgeous. I didn't see a ghost, but the bedroom the father sleeps in gave me the creeps.

I stupidly read something about the book and it had spoilers

ASauvignonADay · 01/12/2018 21:18

I loved it - the music, location, filming, the gorgeous Irish accents... thought it was really beautiful. Looking forward to the next episode. Haven't read the book

Choccywoccyhooha · 02/12/2018 00:11

I caught up tonight. I thought it was just beautiful. Perfectly paced, shot exquisitely , and an intriguing story. I'm tempted to read the book now, before the next episode.

beanaseireann · 02/12/2018 08:59

placemats. Thank you for the link re locations. I think I'll visit Springhill when I visit Derry- it's a county I've not been to and I want to visit. I want to revisit Donegal too. Hopefully next year, when the weather gets better I'll go up North.

The actress who plays Beth is from Dublin. She does the accent very well I think.

Clawdy · 02/12/2018 22:14

Just realised the actress playing Mercy was Rose in Ripper Street.

fussychica · 03/12/2018 10:26

We liked it. Dialogue a bit hard to hear in places, another deaf old glimmer.
Apparently they have extended the series to go beyond the end of the book as JD and the director, who also did the Fall, wanted to cover more of the Irish political situation at the time.

beanaseireann · 03/12/2018 20:15

Thanks fussychica.
So perhaps the book spoiler I read won't matter

Just watched the 1st episode & really liked it. Like Jamie Dornan & Matthew Rhys and intrigued to see what happens

kikashi · 05/12/2018 23:06

Matthew Rhys is such a good actor, great in this. Neither option looks good for Elizabeth. Drug stepfather (maybe inadvertently kill him) steal his gold and run off with lover who is likely a terrorist and probably doesn't love me or stay with Stepfather who might rape me? Talk about a rock and a hard place!

Dulra · 06/12/2018 06:35

Yes it doesn't appear she has much options. I thought the end scene really tense and very well done.

kikashi I know with our 21st century heads with fenian brotherhood would be potentially viewed as terrorists but at that time they were considered a legitimate force trying to overthrow British rule and fight for irish freedom this is set only 20 years before the Easter Rising. Don't forget it is set in Northern Ireland where they had a strong ruling unionist population which ultimately was the reason for partition in 1922. Further south the fenians were definitely not viewed as terrorists but fighting for freedom of the country.

cushioncovers · 06/12/2018 16:14

I'm enjoying it.

Timeforachange68 · 06/12/2018 19:00

Quick question-did her mother die or did she leave and then die
