Now on Channel 5. Fabulous fabulous family. I grew up on a farm and reminds me of my childhood (only 2 siblings though)

So lovely to see children all mucking in as a family. And parents that don't restrict learning and adventure on 'what if' health and safety. Great balance between love , nurturing and freedom. Both parents have got it spot on !

What a lovely programme. I have to admit Im exhausted just watching , 9 children and running a farm must be harsh at times but very rewarding. Loved watching the family at christmas simple but special.

BonnieF · 27/11/2018 20:54

Mum looks amazing for a woman who has had NINE children. The mind boggles....

ZoSanDesu · 27/11/2018 20:57

I'm sat up "late" for me watching too- I agree! The parents seem to explain things well and never seem tired?!! Love the older boy teaching his sibling. We don't spend enough time outside day to day.

Though the mum introduced the eldest girl as "she helps with the little 'uns". Which jarred a bit. Hopefully the girl chooses to rather than being expected to

You see , I see nothing wrong with expecting older siblings to help with younger ones - or with family chores. I have always expected it of mine.

They are part of a unit and everyone has to play their part. If one 'chose' not to look after a younger sibling while I was busy or 'chose' not to do an assigned chore .. that would be something that would need discussion -and without good reason would be unacceptable.

The whole concept of children picking and choosing when they will help their own family is where the generation of entitlement comes from. There is an idea that if children of competent age are asked to put a wash on they are 'helping mum out'. When in fact they are helping themselves and the rest of the family.

These parents really do seem to have got it right.

She has written a book called Yorkshire Shepherdess. It’s a brilliant read. What an amazing life.

Scrowy · 27/11/2018 21:46

I live on a farm, and grew up in a very similar lifestyle depicted on the show, as does/did DP.

We both discussed though that a similar sized family, allowing their children to do the things we watched the Owen's doing (multiple kids razzing around on quadbikes with no protective gear etc) but living on a council estate would be perceived/ portrayed very differently.

Not judging, indeed our own children have a similar lifestyle on our farm, but its funny how because its the countryside/farming people think its wonderful and an example of how childhood should be but would consider it worthy of an ASBO elsewhere.

febel · 28/11/2018 07:12

I expected my oldest to help out....we were and are a team...we help each other.
Scrowy....good point..never thought of that.
Adored the programme..always love all Amanda's stuff..books and programmes. Wish I had half her energy!

Looking after 9 children is an enormous amount of work. I wouldn't blame the older ones in the least little bit if they ended up resenting their parents for forcing them into a caring role when still children themselves.

glamorousgrandmother · 28/11/2018 07:27

She looks amazing and I'd like to know how she keeps her skin so flawless when she's out in all weather's all day.

At one point the older boy had to look after the little ones and take them home out of the cold so it's probably not just the girls who get this job.

Re the council estate thing I think it is a question of whether anyone else is inconvenienced by the behaviour. Razzing around on a quad bike in the street or even footpaths in the country side is one thing but on your own land is something else - and they are mostly doing it for a reason.

brizzledrizzle · 28/11/2018 07:29

I missed it, I'll have to look on catch up. Both her books were interesting - quite a change from a woman from Huddersfield (not known for his agricultural history!)

GinGeum · 28/11/2018 16:24

I loved watching this last night. We are farmers and expecting our first child imminently. It depicted exactly how I hope our family will be in years to come. Reuben was an absolute delight of a 14 year old, and reminds me very much so of how DH was as a child. Seeing children being hands on, grubby, outdoors and enjoying themselves was lovely.

dalmatianmad · 28/11/2018 22:05

Their winters look so harsh.
Loved watching this and cannot wait till next week.
What a lovely family!

ladybird69 · 29/11/2018 00:26

I’ve been watching this lovely family over a few years, fist met them on one of Ben Fogles lives in the wild programmes. They are so lovely and such a wonderful caring family unit/team. I remember when Amanda had Clemmie (I think) she was in labour, popped downstairs gave birth in front of the fire! Then made a cup of tea and went back up to bed with newborn in her arms! Wow.
Ps I want little Sid, what a sweetheart.

brizzledrizzle · 29/11/2018 11:21

because its the countryside/farming people think its wonderful and an example of how childhood should be but would consider it worthy of an ASBO elsewhere.

I'm just watching it now. Where they are up on the hill tops on quad bikes in the heavy snow and none of them had helmets on - if that was in a different environment they'd be heavily criticised for it.

Amanda comes across very differently to how she came across in the book; in the book I thought she was very middle aged housewife type character; totally different.

TheEfficientBaxter · 29/11/2018 11:56

Great family.

Love the word 'razzing', too! Haven't heard it for years, and it's one of those great words that sounds exactly right for what it describes IYKWIM !

Chottie · 30/11/2018 04:07

I'm really enjoying this programme too. There is so much love in this family.

derxa · 30/11/2018 13:15

I wanted to love but didn't. Maybe the outdoor scenes were a bit staged.
Also there was no moaning and cursing. Kudos to the mum. 9 children!

feelingprettyalonetoday · 30/11/2018 19:29

I absolutely love this fAmily I follow them online.

Their life is my dream!

I'm stuck in suburbia, but I've got a horse so I'm getting somewhere concerting DH!

purpleme12 · 01/12/2018 16:39

What day is this on?

Bouledeneige · 01/12/2018 21:07

I was wowed by this. Its a million miles away from my London's kids lives growing up. But huge respect to that life, the realness, the fun, caring for the animals, the blood and guts, the harsh weather, the quad bikes.

Good on them. Their children wont all maybe choose that life - but they will already have had an amazing life.

Armchairanarchist · 01/12/2018 21:11

I have seven siblings and grew up on an isolated hill sheep farm two miles up a fell in Cumbria. It could have been our family.

Purplehammer · 01/12/2018 21:28

Some friends went to spend a week B+B with them.
Said they are a lovely family.
Exactly as they appear on TV.

purpleme12 · 01/12/2018 23:36

Does anyone know what day this is on?

purpleme12 · 02/12/2018 00:44

Watching it now. 2 hours bus ride it says to school!
