can only watch for an hr but its already upsetting

BedraggledBlitz · 05/11/2018 21:34

God this is horrific. These poor women.

LookImAHooman · 05/11/2018 21:38

Caught not even five minutes - scene with an older Irish guy in the hallway then two younger guys were shown in - and had to switch over, feeling way too - not even sure, distressed or something approaching it?

I used to be able to watch stuff like this and switch myself off more. Can’t these days. Might have been becoming a parent that did it. I guess it’s testament to the quality of the production as well.

LookImAHooman · 05/11/2018 21:39

Just horrendous events, and presumably so shockingly accurate and carefully done.

NotAnotherJaffaCake · 05/11/2018 21:43

It’s based on a true story:

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-22311437

Heartbreaking.

LookImAHooman · 05/11/2018 22:08

I know. Even if you want to get away from it and pretend, you can’t.

Nannewnannew · 05/11/2018 22:36

Absolutely heartbreaking and gruelling to watch and even worse is realising that this is not fiction but is happening right now. At the end of the programme they said that 5million women and girls had been sexually exploited worldwide during the last year.

reasonsforwaiting · 05/11/2018 22:44

That was shocking. Incredibly painful to watch - I made myself watch but it was very, very hard. 5 million - million!! - women and girls trafficked. Am in shock at the extent of this, of the unbearably terrible lives these women/girls have; lost for words now.

Ffsnosexallowed · 05/11/2018 22:46

Harrowing watch. What's sickening though are the victim blaming tweets saying that she was stupid not to escape. Men really do hate women don't they?

EachandEveryone · 06/11/2018 00:00

The start of it was filmed near me. Its damn obvious its going on all the stickers everywhere. Its sickening,

lazymum99 · 06/11/2018 22:38

Just finished watching. That was hard going. Did I read correctly that the organisers only got 3 years. How can that be? They could be out after a year. I need to know what happened to the other young girl.

notsurewhatshappening · 06/11/2018 22:46

The madam was just as bad as the pimps if not worse. Truly harrowing viewing and so well made and acted.

Bowbridge · 11/11/2018 20:43

This was such a powerful true story drama.

If you have not seen it, please watch it on i player. It will be an hour and a half of your life well spent. It is an outstanding piece of TV which highlights a crime that is going on under all our noses.

I spoke to a police superintendent after watching it. She said many of the car washes, nail bars and sex industry in our area are staffed by enslaved people but they will not speak out or ask for help out of fear. This is shown clearly in this drama.

user764329056 · 13/11/2018 02:00

Pitifully short sentence, an incredibly poignant programme, heartbreaking

FurryDice · 13/11/2018 02:31

The madam was just as bad as the pimps if not worse

I don’t think it’s that simple. Yes she was complicit but I’m pretty sure she would have been brutalised and threatened herself before she became complicit.

I hate it when people say the women involved are ‘worse’. It’s
complicated and how can she be worse? The men are the perpetrators. It’s so easy to blame the women, though.

FurryDice · 13/11/2018 02:34

If you came into the story at the point where our protagonist ‘blind one’ was answering the phones and giving it all the “yes, baby” nonsense, you could just as well say she was complicit. But as we saw she was just trying to survive in a horrific situation. Plus these women become brainwashed.

So no, I do not and will not accept that the Madam ‘was worse’.

I just watched this film on Netflix. I just wanted to share my feelings. When I was Anna's age I was extremely selfish just didn't care about my mother the whole film I kept thinking Romania has no work and you travelled to England to work no jobs in Romania why do you care about your mother scream at the airport on first day travelling to Ireland scream even if luca your friend sold you and answer your mothers telephone even if they do something to your mother scream don't let them take you through the airport without calling help me. 😭😭 In the end despite danger on her mother in Romania the phone call to her mother from Shaun mobile, showed us Ana did eventually risk her mother to speak to the police.
