Wanted Down Under - more ridiculous than ever

Had to switch over yesterday - a woman who wanted 'more quality time with her family and new relationship', which meant leaving her son behind in England plus depriving the daughter going with her of contact with her dad and family, - and the brother of course. How self-absorbed and selfish do you have to be to think this is any way a good idea?

Today's isn't much better. A woman who hates travelling and hates the sun is being dragged over by her husband who is desperate to override any of her concerns.

The programme used to be vaguely entertaining... it's just ridiculous now.

I only caught a glimpse of yesterdays, but was that the one where the woman who was a community police support worker here, but wanted to join the NZ police force, but was shocked when they told her she would have to work shifts and weekends??! It was bizarre that she didn't seem to know the Police work shifts!

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 27/07/2018 09:37

This series is over two years old, so not an uptodate one.

Loonoon · 27/07/2018 09:45

I was shocked by yesterday’s episode. How could anyone contemplate voluntarily leaving a 6 year old child on the other side of the world? But it was OK because she didn’t see much of him - just the two nights a week!

MilkybarGrownup · 27/07/2018 09:49

I find all these programs ridiculous. They want to move over with £100K and buy a million pound mansion and have a job they only have to work part time at.

I turned one off when the wife was ignoring everything her DH wanted and was expecting to move over and (oh so, so patronisingly) "be self employed, teaching the locals how to care for horses properly". In a country that boasts some of the finest horse breeding and training in the world. Ugh. She was so arrogant. The budget was pennies and the houses she wanted were on a whole other level.

Wishfulmakeupping · 27/07/2018 16:29

Just watching the nz engineeer police one- was 🧐🤨when she said she’d be able to offer her 7 y o who she was leaving behind a better lifestyle erm...

Wishfulmakeupping · 27/07/2018 16:30

Wonder if they did make the move if it’s smoked one

Wishfulmakeupping · 27/07/2018 16:30

Old!

Sparklingbrook · 27/07/2018 16:32

I had one eye on yesterday's. I originally though that it was Mum and two daughters. Blush

I heard mention of a son but presumed he was at least a teenager. Shock

Sparklingbrook · 27/07/2018 16:32

But let's not forget- nothing, but nothing can top the 'poor Brendan' episode.

Wishfulmakeupping · 27/07/2018 16:37

Oh god ‘poor Brendan’ bless his heart- his wife 😱

Sparklingbrook · 27/07/2018 16:38

Mr & Mrs Brendan and the brain washed daughters ended up going Down Under as well!
But that poor man-the tears.

Daysofpearlyspencer · 27/07/2018 16:39

Sparklingbrook
Do tell me of the poor Brendan one!

kenandbarbie · 27/07/2018 16:42

Probably most of them only go on the show for a free holiday

LePolyBag · 27/07/2018 16:43

Did they ever do a follow up show on poor Brendan?

Sparklingbrook · 27/07/2018 16:45

I might need some help because it was a few years ago. Someone correct me if I get anything wrong!

Poor Brendan was a lovely man and he ran a painting and decorating business in Devon/Cornwall. He did NOT want to go Down Under. But they had two/three daughters and the Mum REALLY wanted to go. So she spent every spare minute brain washing them with tales of how marvellous it would be. So it was basically three against one.
They ground him down but he cried a lot. It was awful. Sad

Sparklingbrook · 27/07/2018 16:48

It was 2014 but here's the blurb from the episode-

For Angela Morby, what started out as a dream of moving down under has gradually become an obsession - one she now shares with her three daughters. Unfortunately, her husband, born and bred Cornishman Brendan, cannot bear the idea of moving so far from the places and people he loves

After a week in Perth, they each face a choice that could break the other's heart

Wishfulmakeupping · 27/07/2018 17:02

Think as well Sparkling she said at one point something along the lines of... ‘if you don’t come I’ll divorce you and the kids’
He cried A LOT

Wishfulmakeupping · 27/07/2018 17:02

And take the kids!

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 27/07/2018 17:03

I really don’t get people’s ambitions on this programme, they all seem to be clicking their heels at swapping their 3 bed semi in dullsville in the UK for a move to an equally generic dullsville housing estate in Australia. Everyone seems to be under the impression you work part time in Australia for triple the money in the UK, and does every Australian spend their free time visiting the local wildlife park as WDU seems to suggest?!!

Sparklingbrook · 27/07/2018 17:12

YY I think I remember that Wishful that poor man.

There is so much wrong with WDU. Like the house back home valuation. Would you not have had the house valued already? Plus the price of food. Do these people not have Google? Hmm

CurbsideProphet · 27/07/2018 18:38

I was v surprised today that the chap hadn't investigated whether his qualifications were recognised in Australia.
Yy Sparklingbrook it seems unbelievable that people don't consult google first!

Toyboysrus · 27/07/2018 19:34

Some of it must be set up. I'm sure they would google basic information if they seriously want to live there. I find the whole concept quite sad tbh, whatever they end up doing one half of the couple will end up unhappy and feeling resentful.

twofloorsup · 27/07/2018 21:40

I also watched this in disbelief.
The card twiddling to show their decisions was just cringeworthy Confused

EvaHarknessRose · 27/07/2018 21:49

And the woman who would only overcome her heartbreak at leaving her elderly mother behind if they found a really nice house Hmm nice values there.

OlennasWimple · 27/07/2018 21:55

I love the show - if only for the shouting at the screen bits as they all seem to be utterly clueless about what Oz is actually like - but I hate the bit where they show them videos of their family and friends who they would be leaving behind. Emotional blackmail Hmm
