Here we go again

OP posts:

Bluntness, you're being really weird now. Scroll back to when he was losing interest in Alexandra in favour of Laura2, when I was quite critical and hardly his biggest fan.

Blame the woman? When and where? Do you mean when I said that I wouldn't fancy Alexandra either? Because that's not blame.

RainySeptember · 27/07/2018 12:13

Or am I not allowed to criticise anyone for anything now? Because if that's the rule we'll, you know, Pot. Kettle. Black.

Bizarretortoise · 27/07/2018 12:14

It’s not Alexandra’s fault. I feel sorry for her investing so much in someone who’s not interested. But he did try, and he didn’t like her as much as she liked him. He got scared, cold feet, whatever, and backed off. That’s not her fault that he doesn’t like her as much as she likes him. Equally, it’s not his fault that he doesn’t and ended it.

TatianaLarina · 27/07/2018 12:14

t can't really be his behaviour. We've seen arrogant and patronising and exaggerated feelings to stay in from other islanders, even gaslighting that prompted Women's Aid to step in, but none of those people unleashed all of this.

Of course it’s his behaviour. Everyone who has behaved badly has been analysed and criticised - Adam, Josh, Ellie, Megan! Don’t know why you’re getting so antsy about Alex.

Tellingly many people who liked to start with now do not - purely down to his behaviour.

Maybe a bit of reverse snobbery because he's a doctor with a posh accent, outrage that none of the girls appealed to him and he had the temerity to reject the only one who was really into him.

Why do people keep saying this? He’s not posh. He’s from small town provincial Wales, his dad’s a policeman.

I’m from a ‘posh’ background myself - the only thing I have against him is his personality and treatment of women.

jay55 · 27/07/2018 12:20

He clearly really can’t stand her if he can’t fake it for the final few days.
Or is he preparing for life outside as a single guy who has Hollywood actessses knowing his name and not wanting to miss out on any opportunities due to a fake girlfriend.

I’m sure it’s somewhere inbetween but it will be interesting to see what happens next.

cathyandclare · 27/07/2018 12:22

Ahhh, not reverse snobbery, just plain old fashioned snobbery then. Heaven forbid anyone should hail from anywhere 'provincial'.

Bluntness100 · 27/07/2018 12:33

The issue isn't he went off her, it's he got back with her when clearly not interested, sat in that car and lied through his teeth about their future then came straight back and dumped her. And the other islanders had already spotted there was a problem with his behaviour and were discussing it when he was away.

He sat in that car telling her how they'd see each other, how he wanted to continue it, when it was all lies. He dumped her as soon as they got back.

It's not excusable.

AspireAchieve · 27/07/2018 12:33

Interesting reading, thanks. Please can I ask you knowledgeable folks 'what was Dr Alex doing before LI to be sourced/headhunted for the show?'

Not intending on following his route (don't think it would be appropriate to my HT role!!) - just curious as to what a Dr would be doing to be selected and why?

RainySeptember · 27/07/2018 12:34

I didn't say he was posh because I don't think he is. I said he had a posh accent.

And yes there is reverse snobbery at play. Many of my students disliked him on sight, episode one, for the shallow and trivial reasons already outlined.

RainySeptember · 27/07/2018 12:35

Aspire, he was contacted due to his Instagram profile

Bluntness100 · 27/07/2018 12:38

The thing is I'm not sure alexandra has covered herself in glory either, but hers is more a sad case. She knew he wasn't interested in her. She knew from the start. Yet she chose to believe him, and she still knew that's why she was asking him about the future, she knew something was wrong, just like the other islanders did.

She should have had the dignity and strength to walk away from him but like many women, she chose to believe his bare faced lies.

RainySeptember · 27/07/2018 12:41

" sat in that car and lied through his teeth about their future then came straight back and dumped her. "

Of course he did. Who in their right mind would've chosen that date as the time to dump her.

Do you imagine that no one else in there has told their partner a lie or an exaggeration about their feelings?

It may have been the conversation about the future that made him realise he couldn't keep it up.

Bluntness100 · 27/07/2018 12:44

For goodness sake rainy. You must know him. You're now saying he was right to lie to her?

He could have said anything like I'm not sure, let's see how it goes, he didn't he told her he wanted what she wanted.

How you can justify that is beyond me. I get you like him but that's bordering on obsession.

QueenOfMyWorld · 27/07/2018 12:44

Alex was second best for Alexandra, she def wanted Paul

AspireAchieve · 27/07/2018 12:44

Thanks Rainy - yes I get that, but why?

What did he portray 'handsome Dr', 'medical facts' ?
Why him?
What are his motivations? Just celebrity status?

CardinalCat · 27/07/2018 12:49

Bluntness, Alex didn't need to cockblock Paul and Alexandra. Paul couldn't have been less interested and was mortified at the 'I'd like to kiss you' chat.
There is a fair amount of blame to be laid at Dr Alex's door, but he did not stop her getting with Paul. That is just not correct.

Bluntness100 · 27/07/2018 12:51

I can't believe we are arguing over love Island and the different views on it,

I do think he had a shot with Alexandra and none of us know who he would have picked if he had not been under pressure not to pick her.

RainySeptember · 27/07/2018 12:57

"You're now saying he was right to lie to her?"

Lying is never right but sometimes understandable.

I saw someone caught off guard by the conversation, thought about it afterwards and decided to come clean.

I still think there are people in there who would've kept up the lie until the final, and shagged her on the way to add authenticity.

Bluntness100 · 27/07/2018 13:00

I still think there are people in there who would've kept up the lie until the final, and shagged her on the way to add authenticity

I do too, but that doesn't make his behaviour ok.becayse someone would have maybe done worse.

And it takes us full circle. Because he wouldn't have shagged her as he has no physical attraction to her. For whatever reason he has none whatsoever.

mnahmnah · 27/07/2018 13:02

aspire apparently he has said he would like to pursue a TV doctor route

Mookie81 · 27/07/2018 13:06

@ffaith calling someone 'basic and coarse'isnt personal name calling? Alrighty then!
Funny you ignored my other observation eh?

TatianaLarina · 27/07/2018 13:08

Ahhh, not reverse snobbery, just plain old fashioned snobbery then. Heaven forbid anyone should hail from anywhere 'provincial'

Or maybe other people are just not obsessed with class and it’s nothing to do with class at all?

Is it really so hard to grasp that the issue is his behaviour?

TatianaLarina · 27/07/2018 13:09

I said he had a posh accent.

Yet he doesn’t he has a Welsh accent. If you’re going to obsess over class at least get it right.

RainySeptember · 27/07/2018 13:11

He doesn't have a welsh accent.

RainySeptember · 27/07/2018 13:13

Interested to know how I'm obsessing over class?

I've suggested that some people may have taken a dislike to him because they perceive him to be posh, based on observations of and conversations with my students.
