Killed by my Debt

Did anyone else watch this? I've just stopped crying my eyes out. What an absolute shame for poor Jerome Rogers.

Awful.

I haven't been at school for 14 years now so I don't know how much it had changed but this shows how credit/debit should be taught in schools!

It was really difficult to watch. I really felt for the kid, played excellently by the young actor.

Employment conditions like that should not be allowed to exist.

comeherepetal · 18/07/2018 23:04

It was horrific and although I am not in debt now, I have been so I know those feelings of feeling you have nowhere to turn.

The debt recovery people are ruthless.

It was very well portrayed.

FairVerona · 18/07/2018 23:37

So sad. His desperation was so well portrayed by the actor. It makes me so angry that these kind of jobs exist. Rip Jerome

I just watched this on catch up.

My xp used to work for City Sprint. He was duped too. The way they were portrayed in the programme was how I remember it. Lots of additional expenses but no bloody benefits.

He also didn't always break even.

One thing I did wonder was that Jeromes (not) step dad took out finance on the bike. Presumably the bike wasn't in arrears? Although I guess the log book was in Jeromes name?

RIP Jerome Sad

I found it so upsetting and in society today I can see how it happened. Zero hours contracts and jobs like he did make it impossible to live. But I did wonder too.........I didn't think they could cease a bike with finance and if the step dad held the finance then it wasn't his to cease.

Blueroses99 · 19/07/2018 02:24

Tragic. The debt just snowballed out of control. He tried but no one would allow him to manage the debt.

I wondered about the bike. From watching ‘can’t pay we’ll take it away’ on another channel, it would appear that bailiffs can’t seize a vehicle that’s on finance. So why were they able to clamp the bike?

JimWilsonBell · 19/07/2018 07:52

BlueRoses we watch "can't pay well take it away" lots too. I wondered it more that a bike with finance is worthless to the bailiffs as technically it's owned by the finance company, maybe in this case they were using it as leverage but knowing they couldn't cease it. But the family and Jerome didn't know this. Makes it sadder.

Slartybartfast · 19/07/2018 08:32

i saw in 6 weeks ago and still cried watching it again last night.

Slartybartfast · 19/07/2018 08:33

I just hope if my dc were ever in that mess they would come to me, I might have to suggest they watch this. RIP Jerome

supercalifragilistic2 · 19/07/2018 08:53

Saw this a few months ago, such a sad story.

I also wondered about how they could clamp the bike if finance was already on it. I guess if they didn't bother checking it and Jerome wouldn't have known that they couldn't take it due to finance outstanding.

I work with people who have payday loan debt and it's horrendous how bad peoples debts can end up. Sadly the industry isn't regulated well enough. Some improvements have been made, but not enough that people know they can reach out to charities/agencies for help.

Another poster mentioned about how debt should be taught in school, it's not so much debt, but shitty contracts that people need to be aware of. Essentially that's what started this horrible situation.

mostdays · 19/07/2018 08:59

And yet people defend the rise of zero hour contracts :(

JimWilsonBell · 19/07/2018 09:18

I'm my experience it's only those who benefit or know nothing about zero hours contracts that defend them. My DD (20) has only ever had zero hours contracts since leaving college. It's had such an effect on her mental health. She now has a 20hr/week living wage contract with IKEA, they are flipping awesome to work for. NOW we can see what is her own mental health and what was triggered by never knowing one day to the next if she'd earn money.
