If it helps, I feel exactly like that too.

Fienda · 20/07/2018 15:55

I've finished it now and don't quite know what to think.

The bits where it veers towards the book (Anne cutting her hair for example) have moments of momentum around them.

The rest sort of ... dragged. Without giving spoilers, what was it, four major characters who took up a lot of screen time who weren't in the books? Plus the pretend backstories for various other characters, their relationships, their money etc etc.

I'm not a purist, I love adaptations, but there was a point where I just wanted them to start telling the story of Anne herself.

The morality stories also felt too rammed down your throat by the end (you know, "don't be racist, don't be homophobic"). It grew too overt and moralistic and an advert for modern accepting Canada, rather than "here's the story of a girl".

I began rolling my eyes at just Anne The Perfect and Gilbert The Woke, or Anne The Absolutely Tortured Orphan From Evil McEvilville Orphanage. Grin

Having said all that, it's still not terrible. The actors of Matthew and Marilla and Anne make it worth watching.

Also is it me or does Anne with a shortcut exactly like Mia Farrow in Rosemary's Baby?!

I watched series 1 and was a bit annoyed at how it was diverging from the book - and series 2 is worse - i watched about 10 minutes of the first episode, and couldn’t watch any more.

InfiniteVariety · 21/07/2018 15:17

I would watch Geraldine James in anything - I have admired her since "The Jewel In The Crown" 30 years ago

EmpressWeaponisedClitoris · 21/07/2018 15:21

I watched the first series, & accepted that it wasn't the same as the book, but this isn't sounding too promising.

MrStarkIDontFeelSoGood · 24/07/2018 22:37

So I've just started watching

Mrs Lind what a bitch

Knittedfairies · 24/07/2018 22:40

I enjoyed the first series, but have given up on the second after episode 2.

MrStarkIDontFeelSoGood · 25/07/2018 12:57

Watched the first and liked it but won't stick with if it's going to deviate hugely from the books

tribpot · 26/07/2018 13:14

I'm really struggling with it - think I'm on episode 3. It's just preposterously un-Anne-ish. Why not write an original series set in the same time period if you want to do Ripper Street: Green Gables Edition?

Lavenderbathbomb · 26/07/2018 13:20

I definitely enjoyed season 2 much less than season 1. Lots of focus on new characters and Anne crosses into unbearably annoying territory many times to the point where she's hard to watch.

ISaySteadyOn · 26/07/2018 17:15

Exactly, trib.

SerenDippitty · 27/07/2018 09:36

I love the books, but Anne is even more of an unbearable drama queen in this than she is in the books!

I do like the Marilla and Matthew characters but the real Marilla would never have had her head turned by Nate (wasn’t he that student at Uni that Anne thought she was in love with before realising he had no sense of humour and was a total bore, unlike Gilbert?)

tribpot · 27/07/2018 17:11

That was Roy Gardiner, Seren. No doubt in that adaptation he'll be some kind of Gatsbyish billionaire who is running a couple of mistresses and doing some illegal trading in between classes at the Uni.

SerenDippitty · 28/07/2018 07:28

Oh yes Roy Gardiner!

NicoAndTheNiners · 28/07/2018 07:49

I also enjoyed the first series and haven’t even finished ep1 of the second before giving up.

EmpressOfSpartacus · 28/07/2018 08:54

Thanks everybody. I won't worry about reactivating my Netflix account!

Magicpaintbrush · 01/08/2018 11:56

I haven't read the books so this series is completely new to me, so as somebody coming to it without any preconceptions of what the characters or plot 'ought to be like' in comparison with the books I really enjoyed it and found it all quite magical. It is comfort tv, and I enjoyed the second series as much as the first. It reminded me a bit of Little Women, it's got that same cosy feeling. It gave me the warm fuzzies in fact and I didn't find any of it dull or slow - enjoyed it all.

papayasareyum · 08/08/2018 15:47

loved series 1, but hard episode one of series 2 and didn’t know who some of the characters were. They weren’t introduced properly. And Anne was just about bearable in series 1, but a massive pain in the ass in series 2

papayasareyum · 08/08/2018 15:47

hated not hard

B00dyM4ry · 08/08/2018 15:52

I agree - enjoyed series 1 but couldn't get through episide 1 of series 2. She is so annoyingly precocious it is unwatchable!

JuneFromBethesda · 21/08/2018 21:48

I’m late to this thread but searched it out because I’m watching episode 1 of series 2 and wanted to see if others felt the way I did - I’m glad I’m not alone! I loved series 1, despite the deviations from the books but what have they done with series 2?? I agree that suddenly Anne, whom I loved in series 1, is now irritating the life out of me and what is this ridiculous plot? The books are lovely, the plots are all there, why did the writers feel the need to make up something new?

I want to see the books brought to life. Not whatever this is Sad

fourthusernamebutwhoscounting · 26/12/2018 21:02

I love it just for Marilla!

uer587392 · 09/01/2019 22:37

Late to this party, but nearly finished series two.

I love the Anne books - but I'm OK with this, I can enjoy the fab casting and acting, and don't mind that it's got nothing to do with anything in the books.

Loving the lesbian party episode Grin
