crikey, I'd forgotten what a weird film it was!

Yes, watched it again.

I love The Wicker Man. The best bit is knowing that woman in the sweet shop is the one in Balamory. Balamory is so similar too!

expatinscotland · 21/05/2007 21:08

It was creepy allright. The make up and costumes were horrible .

Bouquetsofdynomite · 21/05/2007 21:13

I find the only scary bit where he's trying to get the plane started and the animal masks suddenly appear over the wall watching him. Totally budget-free but effective, esp with the twangy music.

TinyGang · 21/05/2007 21:21

It reminds me of a Scottish version of Deliverance.

Lovecat · 21/05/2007 21:48

Ooh, I saw a tiny bit of this film when I was a little girl - I'd woken up, got out of bed and gone downstairs to see mum for a glass of water and walked in on the children singing that creepy, creepy song around the maypole - which, of course, I was fascinated by - and I clearly remember the teacher then saying 'and what does the maypole represent, children? That's right, the penis!' or words to that effect...

Cue mum hustling bewildered 5 yr old back upstairs to bed... I can still remember it now - put me off folk music for life!

And Nicolas Cage deserves to be beaten with a rolled-up newspaper for repeatedly starring in shitty remakes of brilliant films (Wings of Desire, for one. Beautiful, heart-rending film. City of Angels? Bag of Shite!)

Wild at Heart and Raising Arizona - brilliant. I even have a soft spot for Honeymoon in Vegas (something about those skydiving Elvises) while the OH loves him in Con Air for the immortal line - put the Bunny back in the box!

But utterly unintelligible in Moonstruck and Peggy Sue Got Married so yes, a rum bus is a vg description of him...

DarrellRivers · 21/05/2007 22:27

love that line
we still use it in our house
Put the bunny back in the box

filthymindedvixen · 22/05/2007 10:42

Aitch - i neeeeeed that book! (can you CAT me the details?)

AitchTwoOh · 22/05/2007 17:28

cannot believe the price
maybe i should flog mine? would that fact that the author has scribbled all over it be a good or a bad thing, d'you think?

americantrish · 22/05/2007 17:30

i didn't like either versions of the Wicker Man, old or new!

Dalesgirl · 22/05/2007 17:44

Love, love, love the Wicker Man. I can't get with those who find it scary..it's just so atmospheric. Rod Stewart disapproved of the shots of wifey Britt as she was pregnant at the time (not that you'd know) and he demanded that they were cut. They subsequently used a body double. For me the film is added to by the statement at the beginning thanking Lord Summerisle for letting them film his subjects practices...way ahead of its time..all those years later we get Blair Witch Project.

I think the film was shot around Kircudbright in the scottish borders. Get the soundtrack, it's great..

Talcyoyo · 22/05/2007 17:47

This AM, DD2 hid behind the sofa with a cat mask on

Then popped up quickly

Nearly cacked myself

cornsilk · 22/05/2007 17:50

The bit where he first sees the wicker man is super scary I think!

OrmIrian · 22/05/2007 18:00

Great film! But can't actually watch the end .... when I was younger I felt more sorry for all the animals than Mr Woodward

SaintGeorge · 22/05/2007 18:04

The Rod Stewart stuff is a rumour (some versions have it as Barry Manilow PMSL).

cornsilk · 22/05/2007 18:08

Omirian - yes! I got upset at sound of animals too!

AitchTwoOh · 22/05/2007 18:30

i transcribed the robin hardy interview in that book and can confirm that stG is correct.

filthymindedvixen · 22/05/2007 19:32

Aitch, I have just picked myself up off the ground after seeing the price! (I don't want it that much...)

Am now enviously in awe of you for your connection

AitchTwoOh · 22/05/2007 19:39

i just phoned the author to tell him and he had to pick himself up off the floor too... he's tempted to go and get his copies off his aunties and uncles etc.

SaintGeorge · 22/05/2007 19:45

They must be first editions or something.

It is cheaper to buy a new copy abroad here

AitchTwoOh · 22/05/2007 19:53

mine is a first edition... [puffs chest]

AitchTwoOh · 22/05/2007 19:53

have you read it, stg? it's a cracking book i think, really funny. if you have it you know my RL name...

SaintGeorge · 22/05/2007 19:55

Not read it, but I will if I can get my hands on a copy.

foxinsocks · 23/05/2007 09:26

oh Aitch, that's hysterical (the price).

You better hang on to your copy - in about 20-30 years time, it'll probably be worth an absolute fortune and then you can flog it and it'll keep you going in old age!
