Yes I think you've summed it up perfectly there spider!

sheldonesque · 17/06/2018 18:55

I am crying and I don't quite know why.

Holding on.

cushioncovers · 17/06/2018 21:55

I really didn't understand the last episode.

I took the last episode to mean that Amy’s mental illness took over her and then was realised in music, but she had the support of her band and girlfriend and family, Maurice continued on his long sad road, but ultimately seemed to see light at the end of the tunnel. Douglas overcame his anger and sexual frustration and also allowed himself to open up to his sister’s illness which I think he was always aware of and frightened him and the mother regained herself through fighting for her family and protecting them. And this was depicted in the end credits with the illustrations of the family fighting together to fight off the darkness that haunts them.
Meanwhile Shun, who wanted a new life, cannot escape his demons of a lost family. He’s moved across the world, tried to drink away the pain, but is left with an overwhelming sadness he can’t fight. So we see him in the penultimate episode considering whether to end his own life.
I thought it was excellent.

Sorry for lack of paragraphs.

@Jammycustard - yes! Thank you. That's a whole other dimension that I hadn't quite processed.

Jammycustard · 18/06/2018 09:39

I really like how it’s open to interpretation.

Found this today.

That's a nice piece Jammy, thanks for sharing. I do think it's a totally brilliant program, though I can see how it's not for everyone

What is Baumgarten? Fictional story made-up by Grandfather with bi-polar, which triggered an episode of mania in Amy?

I agree re. middle class 'woe is me', but I thought the character of Shun counteracted that - displaced, traumatised by death of family members, no personal possessions. He was in that bedsit on Deptford High Road.

Flatpackjackie · 09/07/2018 14:32

I didn't like the band members' roles. Talented, creative, beautiful; lounging around and eye-rolling - seemed like lazy writing to me.

I thought the actor who played Donald was excellent. in a permanent state of fury!

Have just come to this party late having watched both series in the last week on catch up - magnificant and moving. It was just so "honest". The man that played Shun should win an award for that role - he was just exquisite and created such empathy.

nowifi · 08/08/2018 08:45

He also writes the series 2018 - I thought he was great too.

Perhaps, if the last episode were the remembrances of Shun in the forest (not 'rememberance' in the memorial sense) then they concludedded on the right note with "but if you can hold". If this is the case then I think Shun will have held on.

futuristic1: I'm going to suggest to you that you have such a chip on your shoulder about being poor, and hating anyone that seems not poor, that you completely miss the deep sweetness and compassion of this film. Just like when Hylda talks about the friend who supported her but was a racist, and no matter what she said, he didn't see it. You don't see beyond your prejudice, which i can relate to, because I used to be like that. Poor, no food in the house, daily rows and old clothes, and my envy and disdain for well-off people (40 years later, directly related to me ditching my envy and practicing being happy for those who had more than I, i own a house, old, a bit run down, but so loved and homey). Their house is old, and well lived/loved in, it's run-down, messy, cozy and it shows that many families have raised their children there. Will is not 'trying to show that it's ''better being mentally ill when you are rich' (??), he is simply showing the humanity of the characters, with such an eye and feelig for authenticity, love and the human condition. You are the one unable to look at it outside of your self-imposed box of looking at the world as a victim, spreading ill will toward those on the illusional 'other side' of you. The way I've experienced this production was that it is one of the most beautiful films ever made.

Does anyone know what the Japanese character Shun wrote before he went into the woods said?
