Fecking dubbed audio (Netflix): How to get rid?

Dark seems to have slipped into English and we can’t get rid of it. German is not offered in the language list in the audio options. The next episode still seems to be in German. We are on an Apple TV box for the streaming. Waaaaaah! Someone tell me how to fix it?!?

Plaintive bump

I don't know anything really about Apple TV but in theory you should still be able to change it within the same panel that has

Resume
Play From Beginning
More Episodes

If you know the bit I'm referring to after you've selected a title but then backed out to the menu ??

boatyardblues · 07/06/2018 19:49

I do. We spent ages titting about trying to fix it, then watched ep 7 dubbed into English in desperation. It righted itself to German with English subtitles in ep 8, thank God. Thanks for trying help though. Tech is great until, um, it isn’t. Hmm

We watch on Virgin or directly on Samsung TV. There's a hidden menu top left which when you hover over it you can select options including audio and subtitles.

BTW OP

I love love LOVE Dark. Happy to discuss once you are done.

boatyardblues · 08/06/2018 00:11

Thanks MrStark. We are also loving it. It is a dedicated homage to brown, with accents of orange & turquoise. I also ❤️ the pea green mark 1 VW Golf in the 80s power station car park. Makes me misty eyed for an earlier love of my life. Wink

Gosh I didn't get any of that!!! Shock

boatyardblues · 08/06/2018 00:39

Yes, there is a very subdued palette. In the 1950s Helge had a lovely turquoise tank top, whilst one of the girls in the clockmakers shop had an awesome orange mac. In the 2015 scenes, Katharine and Ulrich’s house is very beige/brown but there are accent items like cushions and clothing which are orange. The squirrel wallpaper in the bunker = turquoise. DH and I like to spot the bright spots of colour in amongst the dirge. 👍 for the production designers.

The Yellow mac!

It's really tightly plotted but I was sure I spotted a hole.

MyDcAreMarvel · 08/06/2018 00:46

Are you German? Why don’t you want it dubbed? There should be a square in the right hand corner of screen.

MrStarkIDontFeelSoGood · 08/06/2018 00:57

The correct question is :

Why the hell would you want it dubbed?

It's a German production with German actors, who wants American voices that don't match the actors faces or mouths pasted over it?

MyDcAreMarvel · 08/06/2018 00:59

Me, I would rather not have subtitles.

boatyardblues · 08/06/2018 07:21

Quite. Having watched both versions (against our wishes), the dubbed voices are woefully miscast - peppy, young voices vs the far greater range of timbres in the original. Its so much better subtitled.

I haven’t yet experienced it, but I did read that they have started to use dubbing as default choice over subtitles - the article I think said that subtitles would be available in accessibility options (presumably with non dubbed audio but I don’t really know).

boatyardblues · 08/06/2018 08:36

This was the case, but German (original production language) wasn’t in the listed audio options. We could have reinstated English subtitles with Portuguese, French etc bit no German!

TheThirdOfHerName · 08/06/2018 08:41

How frustrating.
Dark is one of those shows where watching it with subtitles is necessary to get the full translation (the English lines are longer and cannot be fully spoken within the timeframe so the dubbed lines are an approximation).

TheThirdOfHerName · 08/06/2018 08:43

I tried watching the first episode dubbed. The voice actors for the English dubbing are either miscast or did not understand the mood of the drama.

boatyardblues · 08/06/2018 08:46

Agreed. It sound like they got Alvin and the chipmunks in to do the voiceovers.

I loved Dark, and I cannot watch anything dubbed. It jars horribly.
Subtitled films and tv are also how I improve my foreign language skills.

TheThirdOfHerName · 07/07/2018 21:46

For those who enjoyed Dark, there's a new (French) series on Netflix called The Forest.

LightAsTheBreeze · 09/07/2018 20:41

The easiest way I have found to get subtitles is to sort it out on the app, I use an iPad as it is easy to change, then when you watch it on the TV the subtitles are there. I found it very hard to work out how to change it on the Samsung TV. I am guessing this hopefully should work for Apple TZv
