Caught my 12 year old daughter watching Love Island because 'everyone does'. Can this be right? Isn't about morons humping each other? Please enlighten...

I've recently started watching it on Netflix as everyone was going on about it last summer and I felt out of the loop.

It's somehow compulsive but it makes my blood boil.

The men speak about the girls with contempt and call them "frigid" or a "slag" depending on how much they put out

From the start they are "coupled up" I.e compulsory bed sharing with a random stranger

In S2 which is what I'm watching, one girl has a one night stand, the other girls massively slut shame her, whilst the boy is congratulated on what a lad he is.

A girl comes in who is a stripper the boys talk about her as you might a prostitute and say "fuck her and chuck her"

If your DD was 15/16 I'd say watch it with her and point it out as a guide for how NOT to be treated. Gaslighting, negging, double standards, possessiveness.

For a 12 year old ?!?

NO CHANCE

please sit down and watch some when she's not there and see how bad it is.

Shag Island. ...

Tuckingfypo · 26/05/2018 19:25

Agree with @MrStarkIDontFeelSoGood the lack of respect men have for women on the programme is astounding.

I'm roughly the same age as the people on it and I don't know any people who are really like that. The only way I would let a 12 year old watch it is if I were watching it with them and pointing out everything wrong with it and show them what type of boy NOT to bring home.

It's trash TV that is strangely addictive but not appropriate for a 12 year old.

EddieTheBeagle · 26/05/2018 19:28

It's a pile of shite! Certainly not appropriate for a 12 year old.

ScarlettDarling · 26/05/2018 19:29

Totally inappropriate for a 12 year old! Shock

Tucking I'm so glad to hear you say that you're that age and that you and your contemporaries aren't like that. You see these young people on all these reality shows and worry that that's just what the "youth of today" is like!! Makes me worry about the pressures on my dc in a few years.

Lilao · 26/05/2018 19:37

I'm mid twenties and do actually enjoy it but there's no chance I'd let a 12 year old watch it.

There's a lot of sex, relationship talk and grown up humour so I really don't think it's appropriate.

PrincessScarlett · 26/05/2018 19:46

Definitely not appropriate for a 12 year old.

The series before last was particularly bad but in general it normalises young people having multiple sexual partners, shows the girls being bitchy to one another and the men having appalling attitudes towards women.

Last years series had some larger than life characters on it that slightly detracted from the shag fest. It is compulsive viewing but all for the wrong reasons. I do worry that 12-16 year olds will be influenced by what they see.

Tuckingfypo · 26/05/2018 20:40

@ScarlettDarling I'm sure sadly there are people like that but mostly people my age are normal, thankfully Grin

I watched Season 1 and one of the girls was talking to the guys and said "I've never had a one night stand. I think it's disgusting" and then when the men reacted she said "it's disgusting for women, not for men" Angry I wanted to throw something at the TV!

And another episode, after knowing each other less than 24 hours a guy called his "partner" frigid because she wouldn't do anything with him in bed. That's not frigid, that's called having self respect!

Sorry, I could rant about it for ages! I sincerely hope my daughters aren't ever treated that way and I hope they don't act that way either

ScarlettDarling · 26/05/2018 20:53

Tucking I feel ancient when I watch stuff like Love Island, and I’m not that old (43!) I would hate my son to grow up to act and treat women in the way these men do. I’d hate my daughter to grow up and talk/act like these women do.

Noboozeforme · 26/05/2018 21:35

It's compelling viewing.. car crash TV.

I won't let my almost 16 yr old DS watch it (or other programs like it).

Cheryllou · 29/05/2018 16:23

Thank you all, kinda what I thought. And I thought Peppa Pig was a bit sexist...

Iain Stirling's voiceover is the best thing about this programme. Makes it worth watching to me! But no, not for a 12 year old.

busymum63 · 04/06/2018 14:35

Hey my 7 year old loves this show we watched it together last year. Although the down side was that he was falling asleep in school, due to the late nights. I believe It teaches him how to form real relationships and know how to speak to new people.
Hope this helps x
