So sad. It makes me so angry to watch this, his poor friend and of course his family.

So sad.

Macarena1990 · 17/04/2018 22:21

My heart goes out to the Lawrences. I hope that justice is done and they can finally get some closure. RIP Steve.

unicornandrainbows · 17/04/2018 22:32

Just watching it now.
There are no words.
So sad

FrancesHaHa · 17/04/2018 22:44

Really well made, but hard to watch. Especially when Dwayne Brooks was describing how he was trying to get help after Stephen was stabbed.
Heartbreaking

Choccywoccyhooha · 17/04/2018 23:55

Such an awful tragedy that still echoes today on the streets of SE London. I have met Duwayne Brooks several times when he has come into schools I have worked in, he has done some fantastic work, as has Doreen Lawrence.

I will be watching for the rest of the week, hoping that the programme sparks something that finally brings the remaining perpetrators to justice.

HelenaDove · 18/04/2018 14:10

Doreen Lawrence being interviewed on Loose Women.

HelenaDove · 18/04/2018 21:27

Micheal Mansfield QC is an amazing lawyer.

HelenaDove · 18/04/2018 21:35

What the fuck is that copper on? Saying that not smiling was Doreens "gimmick" and saying that her lawyers Mansfield and Khan are "extreme left wing"

KittTheCar · 18/04/2018 21:46

Didn't see the program but the Lawrence family are amazing, an incredible example of persevering when everything was against them just unbelievably brave and tenacious, an example to us all.

Pomegranatepompom · 18/04/2018 21:46

I've had o stop watching. Devastating that the police didn't try and help him Sad

Oblomov18 · 18/04/2018 22:03

'Enjoyed' (not quite the right word) episode 1 and now 2.
This 3 part series on Stephen Lawrence is good.

Paul Condon? Police. What a disgrace.

All the police involved. An utter disgrace. An embarrassment.

Looking forward to episode 3 tomorrow.

BettyPitts · 18/04/2018 22:11

I'm really sad that Doreen has never spoken to Duwayne again. Even if he did run he was 17 and terrified, I'm sure he did his best at the time.

Feelslikecrystal · 18/04/2018 22:18

Wow! How on earth was this allowed to happen? Totally agree with you helenadove gimmick not to smile, lost for words doesn't cover it.

Shocking!!

MrsAJ27 · 18/04/2018 22:55

It is so utterly fucking heart breaking😢

Littlelambpeep · 19/04/2018 01:34

What an amazing mother. I wad young at the time and probably sheilded from the media back then.

As a mother and now nearly 40 I am so angry and felt sick to hear that Stephen got no first aid on the scene and of everything I watched - that stands out to me the most.

No humanity shown. I really did not experience racism and went to a diverse school and have mixed race relatives. What a brainless act of cruelty

Pomegranatepompom · 19/04/2018 06:48

I agree with you little those police officers should be utterly ashamed.

KT63 · 19/04/2018 07:20

I watched this in abject horror at the attitudes clearly still present today. Especially the officer who smugly insinuated Duwayne Brookes had something to hide because he hadn’t spoken to Doreen or Neville Lawrence since Stephen was killed.

I was a kid when it happened, I was horrified then but as a mother of 3 now it absolutely sickens me that Doreen Lawrence was effectively told her son was worth less because he was black. I cannot even comprehend the callousness of that.

I have an unfortunate link to this case, one of the outstanding suspects was part of a group of males who indecently assaulted me as a teenager. He laughed when he told me who he was and that they’d never prove it. I contacted the police again yesterday to see if my statement to that effect had ever been submitted to the Met. It hadn’t.

Chulainn · 19/04/2018 09:34

KT63 I'm sorry that happened to you. What a horrendous experience. Well done for contacting the police again.

The way the police acted in the Stephen Lawrence case was disgraceful. I found myself getting angry last night when the policeman was sneering and dismissive of the Lawrence's and their team. However I do feel that him going on this programme effectively proves the appalling attitude that the police held during this case and during those years. I think he's proved the Lawrence's case by just being himself. He should be ashamed of himself. Sadly he'll probably just think he's right.

DontDrinkDontSmoke · 19/04/2018 09:39

Watching yesterday evening I still felt as if the police don’t take any responsibility for their huge failings that night.

The police, and many others in authority simply don’t like young black men/boys. I don’t think that has changed over the years.

Chulainn · 19/04/2018 09:47

I agree Don't. They think they were in the right and nothing will change their minds. I wonder if any of them have watched the programme and if they see themselves like we've seen them? It's horrific the way they treated the Lawrence's and Duwayne. I felt so sorry for Duwayne. I hope he gets some comfort from Neville Lawrence saying that they were told that he ran away but when he gave evidence they now knew he hadn't.

KT63 · 19/04/2018 11:23

@Chulainn thank you. In fairness what he did to me pales in comparison to what he did to Stephen and what his family have endured over the last 25 years. I have sent a letter to Baroness Lawrence’s office in case she feels it’s something that could be used. At least I know I’ve tried. He was so fucking smug about it, he made my skin absolutely crawl and almost 20 years later I still want to see him jailed for what he did to Stephen.

KT63 · 19/04/2018 11:24

It is a fact that black people are treated differently by the police. Not all of them, but it is still very much an institutional racism issue.

nadinexxx · 19/04/2018 14:21

The ex met officer Bill Mellish I think was absolutely disgusting in the way he took delight in the fact that Doreen and Duwayne haven't spoken since.
The look on his face speaks a thousand words into the type of person he is.

KT63 · 19/04/2018 14:51

@nadinexxx yes! He’s the one I was on about upthread, I couldn’t remember his name. Horrid horrid man.

Oblomov18 · 19/04/2018 16:10

Every single policeman or policewoman on the programme made me feel sick. Their views. They must think we are stupid.

Sir Paul Condon - Met Police Commissioner 1993 - 2000.

Bill Mellish
Senior Investigating Officer
1994-5

John Carnt
Detective Chief Insoector
1996-8

No proper inspection of the murder scene.
No interviewing suspects till after Mandela. Then they'd already disposed of clothing in bin bags, that had been seen!!

The woman police officer who first came round to parents house and the way she questioned them, were these his gloves, like he was a typical black thief.

Then they finally found out that Dwayne didn't run away!!

And the police office that interviewed him? Insinuation that he'd been given info about the suspects appearance, that invalidated Dwaynes line up choices?

The suspects cocky behaviour, in every court appearance.

Family Liaison Officer who didn't do their job properly! That John Carnt never admitted that. Never even responded to most of the solicitor letters! "A distraction"!!

A smile? A gimmick?

What about the first female Officer, at the scene of the stabbing, who never even got the first aid kit out?

How does she sleep at night?

May God have mercy on their souls!!

Inspector Stephen Groves
In charge of the initial enquiries.

All makes me very sad. And angry.
