Anyone watching? I have just started painting again so am finding it pretty fascinating. But the skills levels of the contestants seem pretty variable which is odd!

Hi, yes. I love this.

I thought it might become a re-run of last year, with the abstract artist repeatedly being saved by the public vote, but Bokani was let go last week (rightly so, I think). I loved Chris' woodland painting - it really drew you in.

I have no skill at painting and am so interested in the process. But it strikes me that what they are asked to do is so different from what they normally do that it must be so challenging (even down to be packed alongside loads of other people when they normally work alone).

As to the skill level; I agree. But it's all about 'the journey' I suppose, and receptivity to the teaching

IdentifiesAsMiddleAged · 15/04/2018 16:08

... I did like Bokani's art though.

ElspethFlashman · 15/04/2018 16:12

We enjoy it a lot. We like the Orange Boiler Suit Guy as he seems to be able to really articulate what he wants them to try to see.

The other lady is pretty good but not as good a teacher as him I think.

I do appreciate that the show really tries to get the artists to lose their bad habits and improve.

Cannot really see the point of Mariella and Richard though.

WipsGlitter · 15/04/2018 18:54

We are pissing ourselves! Portraits are not their forte.

Princecharlesfirstwife · 15/04/2018 18:56

Gosh, some of those portraits were awful interesting.

lucysnowe · 17/04/2018 19:34

They really were! I felt really sorry for the old guy though (forget his name!) kind of forced to use acrylic when he's used to watercolour. The technique is completely different and they didn't seem to give him any pointers!

Think Amil is the best but he is v. arrogant. Moustache guy seems to dislike him! I also loved Chris' tree pic and the pics he did at home.

if you enjoy this you should take a look at the portrait painter of the year competition on Sky arts . i think it is on Tuesdays and they are reshowing series 1 at the moment . painters are amazing and so varied in style . i love it .

iklboo · 17/04/2018 19:39

Sky portrait artist of the year has finished now but all the previous series are on Now TV.

HappydaysArehere · 17/04/2018 19:58

Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Year and Landscape Artist of the year are fascinating. They show mainly professional artists although there are some amateurs as well. The skill level is usually high as is the judging. The Big Painting Challenge is more focussed on amateurs having a go, at least that is what I gleaned from the episode I saw showing artists attempting portraits.

QuiQuaiQuod · 18/04/2018 17:27

the judge, Lachlan- I watched his programme Painting the Holy Land, and he's not actually that good. prefer the judges on Portrait/landscape artist.

I like the moustache guy on this though, although I always think Freddy mercury meets the guy from Village people Grin.

And I don't like harsh criticism, constructive yes.

lucysnowe · 20/04/2018 11:15

nb season 2 seems to be on youtube but only from the second ep I think:

I am going to watch and compare!

I wasn't that enamoured of the portrait Daphne was painting either (not that I could do the same) - it did look quite old fashioned.

OP posts:
HappydaysArehere · 20/04/2018 19:37

No comparison. The Sky artists and the judges are streets ahead of the BBC production. Tai Shan Sharanberg (spelling!) is a wonderful.vibrant artist. Love him. Have you seen his portrait of John Mortimer in the National Portrait Gallery?

AlessandroVasectomi · 21/04/2018 14:17

We thought Ray’s portrait of the old lady made her look like Marj Simpson!

lucysnowe · 29/04/2018 13:26

Another ep tonight I think! I felt v. sad for Jane last week. I really liked her watercolour triptych and thought they were very harsh about it. I appreciate she stuck with the bright colours when they told her not to, but Amil never does what he's told and he's still in the running!

Amil never does what he's told and he's still in the running!

I'm really annoyed by him. He's arrogant. His style is more illustrative than actual, observational, painting from life; unfortunately that seems to be what the public judges like!

I love Chris, although his portraits were not his finest hour to say the least. His dog and his landscape were wonderful IMO.

I think sending Ray home was a bad decision. Yes, he had a poor week, but one of the things they say they're looking for is a capacity to learn, and he had that in spaded. In contrast to Amil and also Callum, who seems to have found one style and be unable to diversify from it.

lucysnowe · 30/04/2018 08:30

Yes I love Chris, his tree portrait was great, and I liked his seascape too. They seem v. original, while Amil's stuff is very proficient but not super original. He is very talented though. I feel like the others haven't had their moment to shine though.

I loved Tilly and her giggles at 'the third leg'

I've starting liking Oliver a bit now. I do like Anils style, but agree he is very arrogant.

dingit · 30/04/2018 09:10
  • Amil
lucysnowe · 04/05/2018 11:45

Wow, what was going on here? Why are the judges sooo horrible? I liked Chris' picture and the task was sooo hard!
