Help to identify bbc historical period drama set in India (broadcast 1990s)

I'm looking to try and find the name (and hence copy) of a bbc drama that was broadcast in the 1990s.

From what I remember it was set in Indian in the 1930s. Two British girls lived with their father who was an official in the government. Their mother was dead. The older girl ran off with an Indian boy and had a relationship. I think it ended badly!

I can't remember any other details but I think the ganges featured somehow in the plot or at least the "imagery" of the scenario.

Anyone remember that and put me out of my misery! Have googled like mad to no joy!

I was going to say Jewell in the crown but that was 1984 according to IMDb

DramaAlpaca · 17/03/2018 21:42

Jewel was earlier, 1984 or so. The plot OP mentions isn't quite right either.

Creambun2 · 17/03/2018 21:42

Hi - thanks, no it wan't "jewel in the crown". It was released in the 90s and on BBC1. It wasn't a series - maybe a two part drama over the two nights that bbc used to do.

I don't think it's either of the above but i remember it too!

boatyardblues · 17/03/2018 21:43

Where was The Chamomile Lawn set?

QueenOfTheAndals · 17/03/2018 21:44

I think I remember this one. Not Jewel in the Crown as that was 80s. Was it based on a book by Rumer Godden? Peacock in the title? The girls' father married or was involved with an Indian woman of French descent from Pondicherry?

boatyardblues · 17/03/2018 21:44

Cornwall. Blush

Bananamanfan · 17/03/2018 21:45

Was it the one where the daughter ran off with an indian boy/man and got married and had to dye her hair to pretend to be Indian?

QueenOfTheAndals · 17/03/2018 21:46

The Peacock Spring!

Creambun2 · 17/03/2018 21:50
