Just seen the first series and I love it. New series doesn't start until OCtober.

Hope it makes it onto BRitish TV.

Can't watch the really gory bits though.

Guessed who the ice truck killer was but not why.

Fantastic. Loved him in Six feet under as well.

We've downloaded all of them but haven't had the chance to watch more than the first 2 yet. Must say I love it so far - so deliciously dark.

My sources (DH!) haven't heard anything about it coming on UK TV.

TheArmadillo · 08/05/2007 18:20

oooh watch them all tonight then I can have someone to chat to about them.

GO on - you know you want to.

Is fantastic.

Love the guy playing Dexter. Loved him in 6 feet under as well.

TheArmadillo · 08/05/2007 18:57

dh watched it and loved it....

TheArmadillo · 08/05/2007 19:01

definately worth watching. Very gory and the opening credits turn my stomach. BUt very good writing and MIchael C. Hall as Dexter (who played David in 6fu) is fantastic.

SOme very good American shows at the moment.
Lost (though it went downhill for a bit)
Heroes
Dexter
Studio 60 (if you haven't seen it is worth a look)
House.

It will be a pity if Dexter doesn't make it onto British tv. Channel 4 have bought studio 60 last time I heard.

Still downloading....though I did pause it for 18 hours so I could get Heroes overnight Still, its taking an age

Lizzer · 09/05/2007 20:12

Got it! Will post tomorrow, hope it's not too scary

TheArmadillo · 09/05/2007 20:23

Hide your eyes if you don't like gory bits. THough it's quite obvious when they are coming up (they are very gory)

I'm in my final year too! My dissertation went in last week and my last piece of coursework today. Just 2 exams now, at the end of the month.

Then I can watch as much telly as i like - we have Lost, Studio 60, Heroes, CSI, Bones and Numb3rs to watch, although we are almost up to date on the last three.

TheArmadillo · 09/05/2007 22:28

I have some much stuff to catch up on when I finish (or to start watching). Don't know exactly waht they are though, but know there is a pile being prepared.

What are you studying exactly?

I do early modern Europe. This year war and society, identity and one part on late medieval (concentrating a lot on culture and literature).

Main interest though is in gender history.

We do mostly nineteenth and twentieth century history, my main interest is in local history and social conditions in the late 19th century. I have just finished a work placement at The National Archives.

We have done some early modern Europe, mostly political history, but also looking at crime and punishment.

TheArmadillo · 10/05/2007 15:52

at your work placement. We don't do them. Have never been to an archive as never had the time. Use early english books online and the like.

Social conditions - do you do things on pregnancy/child birth anything like that? I tend to do a lot on experience of life (through a gendered perspective). So obv social conditions comes a lot into that. Tis very interesting.

(Am very nosy)

Yes, I'm quite lucky as I live just ten minutes from TNA. We don't all do the placements - they are available but only for a few people. The best thing is that I have made contacts there.

I use archives a lot as I do mainly 19th century stuff. I haven't done too much on pregnancy/childbirth, although my friend did a project on Victorian attitudes to pregnancy and childbirth. Lots of research was done at the Women's Library. I have done lots on infant mortality as an indicator of poverty, which leads to issues such as the role of women in slum families, breastfeeding, working and the like.

When we did the early modern stuff we touched on loads of gender issues such as domestic violence, infanticide and witchcraft. It was all very interesting and sparked lots of debate in class - we had a brilliant lecturer as well.

TheArmadillo · 12/05/2007 11:57

have you read (although its too early for you) LAwrence Stone Family Sex and Marriage 1500-1800? Tries to cover everything. Very interesting on things like breastfeeding and wet nurses, contraception, child rearing theories (one thing I have studied) and attitudes towards children.

I find it interesting that mortality rates in pregnancy/for infants = a lot lower in early modern period than Victorian.

Also don't know about Victorian but early modern London is the only place in Europe to have more male babies abandoned than female.

We have two very good early modern lecturers. Witchcraze stuff is very interesting but I have avoided getting too close as so much has been written on it. Infanticide as well. Have a very interesting book on infanticide and beliefs about fairies.

Do you use a lot of court records?

thats my sons name

TheArmadillo · 12/05/2007 12:05

was he adopted by a policeman after being rescued from a crime scene and demonstrates sociopathic tendancies? If not I think you're safe

OP posts:
thequeenofcontradiction · 17/05/2007 10:13

I haven't read that one, might give it a look. I have read some stuff by Stone on the aristocracy and the causes of the civil war - a bit controversial among the more conservative historians.

BTW STILL haven't had chance to watch Dexter...

Lizzer · 19/05/2007 20:23

The Armadillo. Just watched the first (finally!) Wow, I like it. Me and DP intrigued already, going to get the next one now... And I fancy him loads which is scaring me a bit

SuGaRCoAteDPoiSOn · 20/05/2007 01:09

is it just me or are the opening sequences with the meat cooking, him shaving, and the tying his shoelaces part incredibly erotic?

binkleandflip · 20/05/2007 01:11

Have not seen this - who is it out of six feet under? Please say peter krause?

Cosmo74 · 20/05/2007 01:13

OMG one of the best things I have seen on TV ever - well on DIVX from USA - cannot wait until new series - DEFINATELY A MUST SEE - nothing in UK TV can come close
