Derry Girls - late to the party!

Was put off initially by the a) wide variety of accents of which maybe four were actually Derry or Derry-adjacent and b) the bonkers over-acting of the main actress but surprised myself by quickly getting past both and absolutely loving it.

Favourite characters were Sister Michael, Granda Barristan Selmy and Michelle.

The makeup was all wrong for the era but the clothes/hair were pretty good and the music was fantastic (😂 at the Whigfield dance).

As an Omagh girl, Kevin McAleer's appearance really tickled me. It also made the last scene of the last episode particularly poignant, I absolutely lost it Sad.

Well done Lisa McGee. Looking forward toward to S2.

Me too. Loved it!!

8DaysAWeek · 03/03/2018 22:13

I was laughing out loud through it all. Had the same reservations about the main girl at the start but by the end I loved her character (kicking myself for forgetting her name!) and Michelle.

It is so fab

The final scenes was that re the bomb in omagh?? Loved the final episode

Wolfiefan · 03/03/2018 22:15

Yes I thought it was the bomb. But wasn't sure if the storyline was the school was targeted.

iheartmichellemallon · 03/03/2018 22:17

I love it too & especially Michelle (hence my username!).

Agree re Erin - she bugged me at the start but loved her by the end.

The bomb at the end wasn't meant to be Omagh as that happened in the school holidays, just a generic awful bomb!

JesusTapdancingChrist · 03/03/2018 22:18

Afaik it was a fictional attack so not the actual Omagh bomb as the series was set in 94 and the bomb was 98 but it was close enough to really hit home.

When Granda put his hand on Tommy Tiernan's shoulder I just went to bits Sad.

Erin is the main character.

Loved the dippy auntie and cousin as well. And Finnoula the chip shop lady 😂.

The accents grated on me too. I loved the student exchange episode - very funny.

pollyhampton · 04/03/2018 11:13

The accents annoyed me a bit at first but it was so funny I managed to forget it! Best bit was the mum refusing to put on a half load, brought back many memories!

longtompot · 05/03/2018 15:49

I loved it! Are they doing a second series? I do hope so.

8DaysAWeek · 05/03/2018 16:20

They are indeed!! I watched it on 4od and at the start of the last episode the maker of the series had a wee video saying how happy she was about how well received the series was and that they had confirmed a second series Grin

It's a given re. TV programmes that the people who live in the area in which the show is set will have issues with the characters' accents. Peaky Blinders being a prime example.

I'm not from Derry so they all sounded fine to me. Sr Michael was my favourite. I loved her 'I am so fucking over this' attitude. There's a good video of her best bits on facebook

I went to convent school in NW England in the 80s, and much of it was very familiar apart from the accents, and in the case of our nuns, a lot of them were Irish too, obviously, athough I confess to not knowing the accents. Recognise Michelle in the girls who tried to be so much cooler and more grown up than many others -yes, some girls had plaits back then, like Jenny, even though we were in our teens.

We also had a talent contest that our headmistress Sister L. pulled the plug on halfway through as she disapproved of some of the acts. Grin

This would be about 1986, so Orla's act would have gone down a storm then providing Sister L. didn't put the kibosh on it.. Grin

I LOVE this and have rewatched it a few times already. Michelle sorting out Clive, Aunt Sarahs way of speaking like she's always had a strong painkiller (like when she in one unbroken sentence talks about being psychic into have we any rice krispies), Sister Michael telling the parish priest to move it along 'rawhide is on in 15 minutes', and how every school had a Jenny Joyce that even the nuns heads were wrecked by. Can't wait for season 2!
