Expat.

People on low rate DLA can't claim carers allowance. It's only for people on medium rate and above. As I said, a poor example compared to a family on basic benefits or even worse a family who own their own home and land on benefits or become a carer. These people exist

IHaveBrilloHair · 13/02/2018 17:21

I've had several benefits stopped due to mistakes in the system, my autistic child isn't autistic as getting a diagnosis is a nightmare, which I've been fighting for 8 years.
I'm in court next month to try to keep my home.
I have done nothing wrong, nothing but the system sucks.

IHaveBrilloHair · 13/02/2018 17:27

Although it is fun to read about the disabled people/parents of disabled kids who must be raking it in.
If only.

MyDcAreMarvel · 13/02/2018 17:31

ItsAllAbitStrange the lady said she was receiving carers allowance though. Her income would have been carers £62 , income support £43 (loose £30 due to carers) TC at least £124 or £144 if high rate dla plus dla at least £55 but must likely at least £78 and CB £20. A minimum of £304 a week plus hb if she rents.
I think £42 is plenty to cover food and board though if her older ds is paying for everything else.

MyDcAreMarvel · 13/02/2018 17:33

Brillo is awful when things go wrong , I have 4 dc entitled to pip dla. The lady in question said she was receiving the correct benefits .

ItsAllABitStrangeReally · 13/02/2018 17:35

I have brillo hair.

I'm a parent of a disabled child, I don't consider us impoverished at all. They mention on the programme she gets carers allowance so will be on similar money to me. We aren't rich by any stretch but we get a holiday every year, and days out within reason. clothes and shoes are replaced when needed. If we want something we cut back and save for it. We don't have a car so walk every where and school holidays are scrimped for in advance because I know they're expensive times.

We don't have expensive phones, sky tv or any subscriptions. Most my clothes are bought in the asda sale but I pay more for my son's. ......still don't consider myself impoverished. 🤷‍♀️ Its life for millions of people.

MrsJayy · 13/02/2018 17:41

I have terrible memories from the 70s hiding from the tick man what was social security coming to check my mum didn't have a boyfriend staying it was no glory day it was shit tbh oh and having to hide from my father because they were not divorced and everytime he came to the house drunk the police never seemed to come as it was a domestic I know I am projecting but the 70s were not all that for everybody

yelloweclipse · 13/02/2018 17:45

I'm a single parent with an autistic child. We get the DLA and carers allowance plus tax credits etc pretty much as MyDcAreMarvel explains it (high rate care so the higher numbers). We are pretty comfortable and we can afford clothes, toys, holidays, gadgets etc. Before DS was diagnosed I was still a single mum but just getting income support, normal tax credits etc, and money was much tighter (although even then we could still afford the basics). I would definitely say we're not on the breadline.

Akire · 13/02/2018 17:46

Thanks for flagging up just watched it. I’m disabled as well and can get by, she must have a lot of debt or something as other have pointed out she will get tips up because of Disability. Did feel like son could helped more. By all means buy trainers but how does anyone need 15+plairs in a year? He was only 17. An extra £10 a weekwpuld have helped. She is stuck really as once son is 18 and if daughter moves in will expect them to help pay towards the rent.

I know several families waiting for leaveto remain. It seems to be policy where Gov takes forever and tries to starve them into going home.

SurfnTerfFantasticmissfoxy · 13/02/2018 17:48

I've decided DS (9) needs to watch this - he is a lovely lad but very blinkered and unaware that there are so many children who would do anything to have a fraction of what he has - if he asks for a sodding iPhone one more time......

IHaveBrilloHair · 13/02/2018 17:51

MrsJayy, when Dd was liitle I used to get Provident loans, and sometimes I wouldn't have the money to pay it so we'd turn off all the lights and pretend to be out, Dd used to call her the lady pennies. (The lady I gave money to)

ItsAllABitStrangeReally · 13/02/2018 17:51

All my sympathy lies with the poor family relying on charity just to survive. An absolute insult to a lady who had worked hard and paid into the system for years.

Her son's excitement when he finally got to have free school meals writing a thank you letter to the person that arranged it made me realise how much we take for granted.

ny20005 · 13/02/2018 18:07

The 70's might be glory days from a child's point of view but I'm sure pate to gave different memories

Lots of strikes & unemployment. Probably lots of worries about feeding & clothing families

I felt sorry for the kids eating cheese & ham toasties as a main meal

Fionne · 15/02/2018 17:51

I just caught up with this. Im dumbstruck.

Fionne · 15/02/2018 17:55

However not loads of pairs & while only handing up £40 digs money to cover food & board

I dont understand why Mum, who was a fantastic woman but the way and someone Id love as a friend, didn't have him covering the 62 pounds a week her income dropped by when he got his apprenticeship.

MyDcAreMarvel · 15/02/2018 20:04

Fionne probably because the actual cost of food and extra gas and electric didn't cone to £62. I doubt it came to £40 tbf.
Everything else her ds was paying for himself.

Springiscoming123 · 15/02/2018 21:36

the scottish lady with the 2 sons and trainee daughter, what a warm hearted women and does everything for those boys

as much as i like her there is noway with her income they are a true representation of being below the breadline, with rent and ct she probably would never be able to earn what she is getting and shouldnt have to by 5p rolls, maybe she has debt from years ago though

the young boy made me laugh when he kept saying about a hot meal and seemed obsessed with food but im guessing he is because he dosent know when he will get fed and consumes his thoughts

how awful to wonder when or what you next eat,he had a great sense of humour and really hope things workout for his family, very sad

Fionne · 16/02/2018 05:04

Ah ok, Im not in the Uk so not up on what that 62 pounds would have been. Was it benefits that affected all of the family income and not a benefit that was her sons share of the benefits so to speak?

Fionne · 16/02/2018 05:09

I have to admit to having a very soft spot for John. He was quite some lad.

The sight of him chasing one grain of rice around the plate though was awful.

Springiscoming123 · 16/02/2018 11:42

oh god i thought that about the rice, very sad

Akire · 16/02/2018 18:07

I think he was taking cold rice and noddles for packed lunch out of food parcels. Must be so hard, if it was a sandwiches fruit and maybe treat it would seem like proper meal. Cold noddles made hours before-yuk.

ny20005 · 16/02/2018 18:18

I get what people are saying about the amount of benefits the lady with autistic son must be on, however she's obviously been on the breadline all her life.

Debt build up - what happens when the washing machine breaks, boys tear a whole in clothes or shoes ?

Borrowing or buying from bright house is really expensive

Snowman123 · 16/02/2018 18:25

Wasn't John (?) lovely. He seemed like a well mannered, happy, grateful kid despite his families misfortune.
He was so excited at the prospect of chicken fried rice on the school dinners menu. I wonder if they were in the county illegally and if so, how did they come to be here.

Fionne · 16/02/2018 18:43

Johns mum had been working as a carer but her visa ran out and they were now going through the right to remain process. Ive no idea what that means but she certainly had a visa at one stage.

expatinscotland · 16/02/2018 18:57

John's mum may have come under the 'Fresh Start/Talent' programme.
