What to watch after Downton Abbey?

I need a new series to get into with my 12yo dd. We have just finished Downton and loved it. Any suggestions welcome!

It doesn't have to be a period drama, just something that is easy to watch, suitable for a (mature) 12yo and relatively feel-good. We are bereft without Downton - please help!

There is nothing. Life will forever be a void.

I'm sorry to be so blunt. But it's best you know.

StripySocksAndDocs · 04/02/2018 22:32

(What did you watch Downton on?)

Foxsox · 04/02/2018 22:33

The Crown

I was bereft after downtown 😩

StripySocksAndDocs · 04/02/2018 22:35

Land Girls is good. Not enough series though!!

Last Tango in Halifax is nice too.

Brokenbiscuit · 04/02/2018 22:35

Oh no! Don't say that stripy!Sad

Ha ha at these. Yes Downton leaves a massive void and there is simply nothing on par to fill it with.

Try The Crown on netflix. That is VERY good, particularly the first series. But it’s not Downton.

Brokenbiscuit · 04/02/2018 22:36

Sorry, watched Downton on Amazon prime. We have Netflix also.

Thank you for the other suggestions. Will check them out!

Just start watching Downton from the beginning again. It's all you can do really. Wink

Ploppymoodypants · 04/02/2018 22:39

Oh yes last Tango in halifax is good. Also depending on how robust your DD is and if she likes crime drama (I Loved Frost and Inspector Morse at that age) HappyLand, The Missing and The Unforgotten are very good. Maybe start with Unforgotton. is very good. But fairly adult storylines.

Brokenbiscuit · 04/02/2018 22:58

Yes, we did talk about doing that - tempting! Grin

DD is quite robust and not easily freaked out by anything. I'm a bit of a wuss though, so don't like anything too violent or scary. Blush She can cope with adult storylines well too, though I prefer to avoid anything with too much sexual content. Less worried about language as she probably hears worse at school!

Maybe try Briadchurch at well? Although I haven’t got a 12 year old and I let my 5 year old watch Harry Potter (which is loves) if you want to use that as a bench mark...

Ploppymoodypants · 04/02/2018 23:16

Broadchurch!

scrappydappydoo · 04/02/2018 23:25

Gilmore girls?

ellenanora5 · 04/02/2018 23:32

I liked the first two series of Victoria, not sure where you could watch it though.

What about Call the midwife, if you're not already watching it.

Last Tango in Halifax is great.

ItchySeveredFoot · 04/02/2018 23:35

I've just binge watched the first 5 seasons of Call The Midwife on Netflix. I'm obsessed!

Mincepies76 · 04/02/2018 23:40

This is Us on Amazon is nice, possibly a bit grown up...nothing like Downton!

RandomUsernameHere · 04/02/2018 23:40

I have just started binge watching Downton and cannot believe I have gone so many years without watching it. It is literally the best thing I have ever watched, I'm obsessed! I'm abroad at the moment and it's not working, I'm having massive withdrawal symptoms!!!

Another vote for Broadchurch as your next series, it's great.

Brokenbiscuit · 04/02/2018 23:46

Ooh, lots of suggestions!Grin

Will look into them all tomorrow! Thank you!

Ive never watched Downton, but I am off on s chill out holiday on my own in a few days, and have downloaded series one and two to my iPad to chill with Smile. Glad to hear it's good!

mrsprefect · 04/02/2018 23:49

Victoria is on Netflix. Both it and The Crown are excellent.

babyboots · 04/02/2018 23:54

Gilmore Girls!

DarthNigel · 05/02/2018 14:00

I'd maybe bridge the gap with some classic bbc period drama-original Pride and prejudice, North and south with Richard armitage, Jayne Eyre, then films: the merchant ivories-Room with a view, Howard's end, sense and sensibility, that sort of stuff...then go in on something like Lark Rise to Candleford or Cranford?

DarthNigel · 05/02/2018 14:02

Why won't my 12 year old watch this stuff with me?!! Although she did love Victoria! But has so far refused to watch any of the others...
She also loved Band of Brothers actually...

Frouby · 05/02/2018 14:03

I am going to look for the back series of Vera. Dd (13) has enjoyed this series. Although it's murders it's not gory or gratuitous and she enjoyed guessing the plots.

susurration · 05/02/2018 14:18

Victoria on ITV
Call the Midwife BBC
The Crown Netflix
Land Girls was BBC originally but you might find it on Amazon or Netflix too.

There are several others such as North and South, Poldark, Outlander (although not really suitable for a 12 year old I would say- quite a lot of bonking and violence and rape scenes too)
