I recently found it on Youtube. Can't think how I missed it when it was broadcast!

So, who was Jamie's mother?

I think it had to be Eden, & I imagine Vera's attachment to him might only have been because he was Eden's.

I wouldn't have thought Eden's husband would have particularly wanted to adopt him & make him heir to his fortune though!

I can also see how Eden wasn't interested in him at all until she knew that she couldn't have more, so Vera wouldn't have expected to ever lose him.

It's a great story! Didn't it have Helena bonham carter in it?

A fatal inversion is just as good too

Jamie is Vera's son.

MrsLogicFromViz · 22/01/2018 13:48

I loved both the book and the BBC adaptation. I always thought that Jamie was Eden's son, born out of wedlock and adopted by his maternal aunt, Vera. The reason why Eden couldn't conceive during her marriage was because of the aftermath of an STD she picked up after Jamie's birth and whilst she was a serving Wren/whatever she did during The War?

I love A Dark Adapted Eye (the novel and the adaptation). The cast is fab (Helena Bonham Carter, Celia Imrie).

I think Jamie has to be Eden's realistically. Vera cared for him from a newborn so the attachment is very believable I think. Also, I think she needs him: her marriage is non existent, Francis isn't interested, Eden doesn't care about her much once she's married. Jamie is Vera's whole world.

In the adaptation Vera does admit that he's Eden's son doesn't she when she says about Eden going to her & begging for help.

Of course, had she not sent Francis away, he might have been interested in her!

And then of course Jamie ends up away at school!

Surely Vera's husband could have divorced her for adultery if she had been pregnant?

In the adaptation I think she does ask hi to go along with the pretense & he refuses.

I'm guessing that's why he just disappears?

I think I might like to read the book to compare though.

Loved it. Wish they adapted more Barbara Vine novels. Asta's Book especially.

Those two, plus Asta’s book are her best work, both the books, and the tv versions are brilliant. Gallowglass was filmed as well, and there are Inspector Wexford books which have been filmed, although I personally prefer her stand alone books like Asta’s Book, The Child’s Child etc over Wexford, but that’s just me. It was a sad day for crime and thriller writing when she died.

CoolCarrie · 22/01/2018 18:30

Definitely read the book versions first before the tv versions.

They are also fab on Audible audiobooks. All of the BV books are available, apart from 'The House Of Stairs'.

diddl · 22/01/2018 21:47

Well I have also bought The Blood Doctor, Asta's Book, The Child's Child & The Chimney Sweeper's Boy.

Should keep me going for a while!
