I love it but im from Yorkshire please dont tell me my accent sounds like that! They all sound like bad Hull accents to me. The acting is amazing appart ftom that. Is it just me?

The Huddersfield accent is quite specific.

PantPlot · 02/01/2018 11:04

I'm from Happy Valley and I thought most of them did a pretty good job. They were also careful to ensure that all the local place pronunciations were correct.

I think it's impossible to define a 'Yorkshire' accent, it's a big old place and there are so many variations- it's likely that you don't sound the same (if that's a consolation Grin)

CatastropheKate · 02/01/2018 11:06

Has a new series started?

Hoppinggreen · 02/01/2018 11:06

Although they used a studio in Huddersfield it’s supposed to be set in The Calder Valley which is classed as Halifax.
I’ve lived in both and I can detect a few small differences between the Halifax and Huddersfield accents in some people.

cathyandclare · 02/01/2018 11:07

The accents in that area do sound like bad Hull accents!

BikeRunSki · 02/01/2018 11:09

Surely the Calder Valley accent is becoming that of downsizing affluent Mancunians and Londoners Wink

EachandEveryone · 02/01/2018 11:11

Its on iplayer im new to it. Her house is flipping gorgous where is that filmed?

OP posts:
BikeRunSki · 02/01/2018 11:14

Its filmed around Hebden Bridge and Todmorden.

NotAQueef · 02/01/2018 11:14

Think the house is in Hebden Bridge - looks like it was for sale earlier this year www.thesun.co.uk/living/4130585/happy-valley-fan-sarah-lancashires-four-bed-home-from-the-show-could-be-yours-for-250k/

buggerthebotox · 02/01/2018 17:34

I love her house too. Especially the back. No garden, though? Sort of communal lane type thing?

I spent hours googlemapping the location but can't find the tall minaret-type structure. Or is it a chimney?

HV has a very strong sense of "place"Smile.

PantPlot · 02/01/2018 17:44

@buggerthebotox I think you might mean Wainhouse Tower Smile

buggerthebotox · 02/01/2018 19:10

Cheers pant. The world's tallest folly! Another one to put on my bucket list for touring the North.....not far from the Brontës either.

Maybe I'll check into the place where Vicky drugged John..

EachandEveryone · 02/01/2018 19:59

Is the property more expensive there compared to other parts of Yorkshire? Would it be classed as posh full of yuppy types and is just rough for the show?

OP posts:
Hoppinggreen · 02/01/2018 20:01

Wainhouse tower is t usually open to the public but I think you can go up once or twice a year.
If you do go be warned there’s not much else to see there and it’s on the edge of a slightly dodgy area. Quite far from Howarth (Brontes) as well, although if you are visiting Yorkshire for a few days it’s easily doable
If you do ever make it OOP NORTH I’m sure lots of lovely Mnetters will help you plan your trip

Hoppinggreen · 02/01/2018 20:04

each Hebden Bridge is a strange mix of Lesbians, Hippies, Hipsters and Yuppies ( sweeping generalisation)
Property IS more expensive than some other West Yorkshire towns but took a beating after the floods of a couple of years ago
I quite like it for a visit, especially the Lampost dog cafe but probably wouldn’t live there

buggerthebotox · 02/01/2018 20:16

hopping I like "dodgy" areas. I'm not one for touristy things really; the area has such a great industrial history.

Maybe we can put together a Happy Valley your....

PickingOakum · 02/01/2018 20:22

The accents aren't really right for the Calder Valley. It's traditionally a very soft "sing song" Yorkshire accent and quite deep. It's also quite slow with a lot of "pauses" for thinking. Grin

However, nowadays, there's a lot of southern and Lancastrian accents due to migration from other regions.

The nearest thing to it that's more known is probably the accents in Last of the Summer Wine.

squoosh · 02/01/2018 20:24

The problem with watching a TV show or film that features accents you're intimately acquainted with is that you pick up on every inaccuracy. Brummies get into a tizz over Peaky Blinders.

EachandEveryone · 02/01/2018 20:29

I’ve never felt like this before! I could never understand when people said how crap the American accents were on The Wire and Walking Dead but I get it now
