I just have to say I'm loving The Orville and fancying the pants off of Seth McFarlane.

Had to get it out there hope others are too. Well not the Seth but lol I realise it's maybe a bit weird.

We like it in our house. All my DC are teens or older and it is a rare programme we can all agree to watch. Love how it's light hearted and not dark and dour like the new Star Trek. Too much murder, crime, darkness on TV nowadays - nice to have something with a bit of humour that trundles merrily along.

I like spotting how most of the episodes are directed by old ST alumni and some appear in it.

PotteringAlong · 30/12/2017 09:47

We’re enjoying it too!

Ooo Grunk that's really interesting. I was really impressed with the authentic feel it had to it even the music score, I used to watch st a lot as a child/teen then stopped but it's made me want to pick it up again. The humour so far has been quite light which is refreshing compared to family guy and American dad which can be a bit "wtf" most of the time, my partner is obsessed.

Yay Pottering that makes 3 of us Grin

I really wanted to like it more than I did Sad

It's OK, but I can happily do something else while it's on (OH likes it) and not be bothered by not paying full attention.

I had high hopes for it so I'm a bit disappointed TBH.

CheekyFuckersAreEntertaining · 30/12/2017 18:11

I'm binge watching it right now. As a Trekkie I am loving itso damn much.
Its clearly based (not even loosely) on Star Trek but in a fantastic, non-ripoff way.
Robert Picardo (aka The Doctor) is in this episode. It's great seeing all the nods to Star Trek, especially the Star Trek actors popping in. And seriously, LIAM NEESON?! Fantastic.

And I noticed the producer is Brannon Braga too.

I am also finding I'm hearing less 'Brian Griffin' and more Captain Ed as the show progresses.

iklboo · 30/12/2017 18:12

It's pretty decent. We're watching as it's released so no spoilers please! Grin

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 30/12/2017 18:14

DH and I absolutely love it. It’s hilarious!

CheekyFuckersAreEntertaining · 30/12/2017 18:15

I'm streaming it from the US so am ahead of Fox UK right now so what I will say is, it gets better with each episode. And it's not even all fun and games and dick jokes. 😂

Kelsoooo · 30/12/2017 18:17

I fancie the pants and did Seth McFarlane so you’re not alone! Also, the boy can sing!

Only watched one episode so far, it’s a nice easy watch,

crispbuttie · 30/12/2017 18:18

What channel is it on? I read an article today about the Black Mirror USS Callister episode and it referenced the Orville.

USS Callister is brilliant if you're into Star Trek themed shows! Probably much darker than The Orville.

MrsFionaCharming · 03/01/2018 17:16

I love it so much, can’t wait for it to come back.

I’m a massive Trekkie, and have been struggling with Discovery, but absolutely love Orville. I’m going to try and make a uniform so I can go to Destination Star Trek as Kitan.

Pemba · 05/01/2018 01:33

I have to say I wanted to love it, but gave up after the first episode. The sets look great etc., and I thought it would be a hilarious spoof of Star Trek, (like the film Galaxy Quest with Alan Rickman and Sigourney Weaver) but it just wasn't. Didn't make me laugh.

Pemba · 05/01/2018 01:35

Or should I give it another chance? Maybe the first episode was slow or something.

CheekyFuckersAreEntertaining · 05/01/2018 01:41

@Pemba hang in there, it does get better. It has a lot of very serious and saddening bits in as well so it's not a Galaxy Quest-ish type Trek spoof, it holds its own entirely.

There are loads of nods to Trek and it does follow the same lines (which makes some sense if we are to believe it is futuristic and the human race has developed, Star Trek is the "ideal" after all) but it is it's own show. Very funny too.

Pemba · 05/01/2018 01:55

Thanks Cheeky, well I will take your word for it and download episode two at the weekend and give it another go.

IAmALeafOnTheWindWatchHowISoar · 05/01/2018 02:04

Would it be suitable for 11 and 12 year old boys who are total Trekkies. The 12
Year old is autistic and would remember all the stuff he shouldn’t remember ie: he shouted at a boy across the classroom that the boy was a total smeghead 🙄, queue me banning Red Dwarf in the house.

MorningstarMoon · 05/01/2018 02:11

Seth Macfarlane ❤ always fancied him and his singing is amazing, he did BBC proms. Orville is so light hearted and I'm chuffed that I'm not the only one on MN who enjoys it 😂

Grunkalunka · 05/01/2018 08:57

IAmALeaf I would think it's okay for 11 and 12 year olds. There is some "comedy" sex in a few episodes (including the first) but very mild. Curious mix of comedy episodes and more serious stuff but it works. There is no bad language that I can recall.

You could watch the first episode on your own and then decide if it is for general consumption.

CheekyFuckersAreEntertaining · 05/01/2018 19:20

@IAmALeafOnTheWindWatchHowISoar (great username. Makes me tear up a bit!) I would be careful if DS is likely to repeat because it does have bad language in, the word Dick is used a LOT. It's even a talking point in one episode too. Someone calls the android a Dick and he enquiries about it, Ed tells him, they discuss how men like their dicks etc etc..,
