Amazon Prime Video opinions

Sorry if this subject has been done to death. As a family we really get a lot of use out of Netflix including DD at uni. We were thinking of also adding Amazon Video too as we seem to watch more on demand programmes than scheduled television.

Is Amazon worth it? Is it equal (or better) than Netflix? Are their original productions on par with The Crown etc?

Yes it's great - we have both Netflix and Amazon Prime. I think Amazon is generally better for films and Netflix for TV series. Def worth getting both.

Amazon Prime Video is awful, and I say that as someone who has both Netflix and Amazon.

The problem with Amazon is that it isn't very clear which films and tv programmes you have to pay for and which you don't. Often you find something you like and it costs a £5. Majority of the good stuff you have to pay extra for.

Other stuff appears or starts free but then they start charging later on in the series when you're hooked (and any tv show you have to pay per episode).

Since I pay £70 a year or whatever it is, I expect everything to be included and not have to pay extra for the majority of the content.

Absolutely not worth it.

We (kids and adults) like prime because a good amount is included and it's easy to see what's free and what requires extra. It has prime plastered across each included movie/programme or different price options to buy or rent if relevant. It has different shows to netflix, new releases and old classics and a better search function. I also like the free music and free next day delivery on Amazon and the rewards (up to £3 gift per purchase on Amazon using 3-5 day delivery). I like the recommendation system too and the sales e.g. 99p new releases.

I always check Netflix first incase they have a movie free but most often it's only available on Amazon.

As far as the TV goes, there are quite a lot of good series on Amazon Prime (Outlander, Lucifer, Mr Robot etc), and some good films. Not sure there is as much as on Netflix though. And there is also some real dross, which you don't seem to get on Netflix. The main problem with it is you cannot share the login details as easily as you can with Netflix. To allow someone else to view, you have to give them the password to your Amazon account, so this would mean they can look at all your Amazon purchases. I don't want that of course, so it means I can't really share, like I do with Netflix. It's annoying.

As far as the next day delivery is concerned, that is great, so it makes up for it I suppose. There is also Prime music and some free Kindle books, and sometimes you get priority when sale events are on.

I’m on the fence. We got Prime for the next day delivery and only started exploring the video a few months ago. We’ve watched a few good films and The Fall but that’s about all I fancy. I agree that it Is annoying that a lot of the stuff you have to pay extra for.

The music service is good to use with my Echo.

Get your dd to do it via student prime, it's free for 6 months then a reduced price after (£40 or so I think)

FaithEverPresent · 22/12/2017 11:38

Prime has been a lifesaver for me this Christmas. I’ve been ill and unable to get to town, most of our presents have been through prime! The TV is okay, there’s some cracking Prime only tv- agree with @Pember that Lucifer is brilliant. I’ve also just watched a brilliant show called ‘Please like me’, very well written. I wouldn’t rely on it alone, we have Netflix which we all use (including 4yo DD), love some of the original stuff on there. I agree the biggest problem with Prime Tv is you never know what you get or what you pay extra for. I feel like we already pay so why are there top ups? We have it really for the delivery service, the TV is just a bonus.

prettypaws · 23/12/2017 12:58

Faith, it says 'prime' across everything included, and as you scroll through it also lists everything as 'popular movies/action/drama from prime' or 'movies/tv shows available to rent or buy' - so it's separated and you can also set it to requiring a password for paid purchases to make it fool proof.

Cocolepew · 23/12/2017 13:10

We have both, student DD pays for Amazon. I prefer Netflix but have watched some good series on Amazon . I don't think I would pay for it if DD wasn't though.

The TV options are OK (Goliath and Man In The High Castle are great) but it's more the free next day delivery that makes it worth it for me. If you do a lot of Amazon shopping then it's well worth it.
