Saving Children's TV

Hi there - I am not a Mum but a concerned writer for tv who has noticed that quality programming for children is in danger of drying up. This is not beinmg alarmist but a fact in that the rich contribution that UK children?s television makes to popular culture needs to be valued and protected. ITV has already chosen to stop commissioning new children?s content and the BBC acknowledge that since the licensing review children?s production will be seriously affected. The cost of making quality tv with high production values is rising especially in the new High Definition format. The Ofcom junk food ad ban, while laudable, also affects the level of money available for new shows and the ability of companies like ITV to commission new work. While there is material in the short-term, the supply of new programmes may run out in about 18 months to 2 years - the time needed to develop a quality show. So the way is wide open for cheap, unregulated imports. We need to protect children?s tv and develop a new funding structure to provide a competitive UK marketplace. We do not want to end up with inferior shows made just to sell toys. If you want to help please go to petitions.pm.gov.uk/savechildrenstv and add your voice... Hope I'm allowed this plea but it's from the heart.

Good grief - that's a bit despotic, you'd like to ban them all? Why not just exercise a little bit of self discipline in your ownhousehold and immolate your tv, rather than wanting to ban children's tv in general thus affecting other families (who love, adore and worship tv unabashedly)?

It's just wishful thinking that, if there were no children's tv, I wouldn't have to try to impose my will on my children. I do despair at the sheer tripe my boys are prepared to watch and also at the fact that my efforts to stop them watching it are so ineffectual, so I'm possibly clutching at straws.

That aric guy used to be on swapshop or saturday superstore dishing out agony uncle advice so it is a bit rich to have him blame TV for all life's ills. I recently read a study that put forward benefits of watching tv - everything in moderation of course... and also a good site that is trying to promote quality children's tv... On it they said

"British society will be the ultimate loser if kids are divorced from their own cultural heritage and immersed in programmes from outside the UK. In some households television is the only way in which kids ?connect? with the world and learn about the society they live in, its values and the way people interact. To damage that connection would be potentially disastrous in the long term.

Children?s television is part of the ?glue? which holds our society together. At a time when we are debating the quality of childhood, and the values we want our children to understand and accept, why would we take away from them a vital ingredient of a healthy personality and one of the bonds which draw us together in mutual understanding?" Makes sense to me
