Did anyone watch this? It was so devestating ,DP was teary eyed by the end and he never gets emotional about films or t.v.
I've always been a fan of Nick Broomfield , and he tackled this subject really well, with no need to over dramatise or 'guilt trip'
Makes me think more about the chinese ladies we regularly see in coffee shops/ pubs near us who are trying to sell pirate dvds, I always pretty much ignored them or saw them as a nuisance, but now can't help wondering what they are going through, and who is controlling them.

i love nick broomfield but i'm ashamed to say i couldn't face the programme. it was so sad

I watched this and thought is was just outstanding: totally unsentimental and all the more harrowing for it. I agree it was devastating but compelling. There were so many people exploiting those poor illegals. They never stood a chance.

So sad, and the chinese man who at first appeared to be 'pimping' was shown as being controlled and totally out of his depth too.
I read about a house in woolwich that was set up as a pirate dvd factory. They found 16 people living there, all chinese, all illegal immigrants but it was owned by a notorious (english born) local criminal who they could never actually link anything to.
Me and DP were wondering last night, can an illegal immigrant declare themself to the authorities and be sent home? Or is it not so simple?

not sure about that - but i guess they would be deported anyway.

babyonboard · 20/04/2007 17:32

Thats what I mean, if they actually want to be deported and go home, can they declare themselves, or is it a complex system?

And do what? most have spent a fortune to get here to start with, and they may well be frightened to return, whether for political reasons or of the connections in their home country that have got them here. And the reasons, asylum or financial, for coming, probably won't have gone away.

I've recorded it for when I'm feeling stronger to watch, not 39+ weeks pregnant.

But after coming here with high hopes and dreams that are totally shattered, working a crummy job and being coaxed into prostitutionc etc, and having barely any oney to send home,. You may really want to just go home to your family, and face the music ,despite how harsh that may be.
I'm just wondering how the government deals with such cases, or if there are organisations/charities set up to help people in this position?.
