Anyone else watched this? I watched the 1st out of curiousity but have given up as there's only so much of (the actress playing) Elizabeth of York flouncing around in cloisters with a sulky expression I can take, and the weird slant that Phillippa Gregory puts on historical fact is barking.

Was going to watch it later will let you know what I think.

FuzzyCustard · 19/11/2017 18:22

We're watching it. More disturbed by the trailers for a programme in the middle of that programme. That's weird!

CourtneyLoveIsMySpiritAnimal · 19/11/2017 20:04

I watched about 10 minutes and had to turn it off quickly before I put my fist through the telly.

I loathe Philippa Gregory’s stuff. I really don’t know why I thought this would be any different.

lucydogz · 19/11/2017 21:26

we kept watching to catch shots of Bristol Cathedral, where part was filmed. But won't be watching any more

Is it just my tv or is it a bit blurry?

Jb291 · 19/11/2017 22:50

Ive seen the whole of the season as it was on Starz earlier this summer. I thought I would really enjoy it but by the end of the series I hated it and could not stand the direction that the plot went.

AlexaAmbidextra · 19/11/2017 23:45

Why does Elizabeth Woodville have to hiss and whisper all the fucking time. You always have to take Philippa Gregory with a pinch of salt with regard to historical facts but I much preferred the White Queen. Quite disappointed in this.

Pemba · 20/11/2017 01:51

Well I know they have messed with the historical facts, but I did enjoy it actually. Jodie Comer is good as Elizabeth of York (she seems to be in everything now, Doctor Foster, Thirteen etc. etc.).

But what was all that about her having been in love with Richard III? He was her uncle , eww! Also this wasn't mentioned at all in The White Queen, was it? (Can't remember how that ended now). I much prefer Sharon Penman's interpretation in The Sunne in Splendour with a very sympathetic Richard deeply in love with his wife Anne.

Wonder why the BBC didn't pick this up? As a continuation of The White Queen, they would have been expected to, wouldn't they?

CourtneyLoveIsMySpiritAnimal · 20/11/2017 11:07

But what was all that about her having been in love with Richard III

I think there were possibly unsubstantiated rumours that Richard wanted to marry Elizabeth (perhaps circulated by his enemies and Elizabeth’s Mother, Elizabeth Woodville) but it’s a modern idea that she actually had feelings for him.

But as usual, PG takes a rumour with the tiniest kernel of truth and runs with it.

diddl · 20/11/2017 15:27

I'm on the first series & quite enjoying it.

But goodness the precariousness of their lives!

lucydogz · 20/11/2017 15:50

Just bonkers imo. Wtf was henry vii wandering around in a crown all the time ( pre coronation) like it was a hat.

TheLegendOfBeans · 20/11/2017 15:58

Haven’t seen this yet but re Richard III and his niece, apparently after his son died and Anne Neville failed to provide another heir some accounts infer he bumped off AN to get to the (younger and presumably more fecund EOY).

Nettletheelf · 21/11/2017 08:53

I can’t get past seeing Miss Fisher (actress from the very funny Australian detective series ‘Miss Fisher Investigates’) as Elizabeth Woodville.

Feels like they have tried to make it into too much of a soap opera. Why is Cecily Woodville trying to get off with Henry Tudor and fighting with her sister? It’s quite implausible.

expatinscotland · 21/11/2017 09:03

Can't ever get into these dramas featuring 21st centuries attitudes and actions. Always felt a bit sorry for Elizabeth of York, talk about the MIL from hell! Henry VII was such a miser, too.

diddl · 21/11/2017 09:11

"Always felt a bit sorry for Elizabeth of York, talk about the MIL from hell!"

Absolutely!

LouiseBrooks · 21/11/2017 13:28

Richard went so far as to publicly deny the rumours and it has subsequently been discovered that he had arranged to marry the sister of the King of Portugal and for EOY to marry another member of the Portuguese royal family. Of course he was killed before it could happen.

LouiseBrooks · 21/11/2017 13:45

The real EOY, funeral effigy . Westminster Abbey has quite a few of these from the Tudor and medieval periods.

I loathe Philippa Gregory’s stuff.

So do I! I know all writers of historical fiction take liberties with the facts, but honestly! And putting modern dialogue into medieval mouths . .. Hmm

CourtneyLoveIsMySpiritAnimal · 21/11/2017 19:32

And putting modern dialogue into medieval mouths

YY!! Had to stop reading ‘The White Queen’ when one of the characters called George of Clarence a ‘numpty’. That and the endless mentions of their conical headdresses.

Pemba · 21/11/2017 19:51

And when they had the funeral of the (real) Richard III on TV, after he was found in the car park, Channel 4 had her on as an 'expert'!

Melfish · 21/11/2017 19:59

From what I remember the book made EoY out to be a bit of a dimwit- it was quite repetitive and I began to make a bet on whether the phrase "'I don't know,' I (EoY) said flatly" would appear. I don't think I could cope with watching it on TV.

expatinscotland · 22/11/2017 08:06

'I loathe Philippa Gregory’s stuff.'

Same.

expatinscotland · 22/11/2017 08:10

'And putting modern dialogue into medieval mouths'

And attitudes. People just didn't think the way we did. Obedience wasn't just expected of a woman to her husband, it was sinful to be otherwise.

LittleCandle · 22/11/2017 08:21

PG was quite good when she first began writing, but then she couldn't be arsed to do her research properly and I gave up on her entirely. I haven't watched this, because there are so many historical errors in her writing and no doubt the person who adapted it has changed history as well. I coulnd't bring myself to watch it. I agree with a pp upthread who praised Sharon Kay Penman's wonderful (accurate!) novel The Sunne In Splendour.

I would love to see a proper adaptation of this. Wish Prime or Netflix would take it up and do it properly.

Have to say that apart from Edward IV though, the casting of The White Queen was spot on and exactly how I would’ve imagined them. Max Irons was horribly miscast though.
