Ugly house to Lovely House C4 - George Clarke

Anyone else been watching this?

I noticed that a couple of things have changed since series one.
First they have got rid of the 'star architect' thing, and now just use the pretty bloke with the blue eyes. Also, they seem to be sticking far more to the budgets they are given...

Could these things be related? What I don't understand is why the architect makes plans that are hopelessly unachievable on the budget? Then they grumble when the client chooses cheaper windows etc etc..

This could be an amazing programme but I'm finding it a little annoying this time round...

Last week George gave a great big hint, have a chat with the architect, don't fill up with too much by way of furniture in the lovely new extension. It still looked quite crammed by the end.

buggerthebotox · 17/11/2017 14:35

Is it me or do these projects all end up looking th e same?

Massive high celing space all in white with black cladding on th e outside.

Looks really cold an d probably is.

TheJunctionBaby · 17/11/2017 16:42

I'm not at all keen on the black exteriors either. And I remember from the last series there was a house that had a curved metal roof that I really disliked. It's like the architects are known for being a bit avant garde and can't do a project without inserting some totally inappropriate (IMO) feature for the context.

I did really like the architect duo that did the Health services couple's house - the black render was not to my taste at all, but they seemed sensitive to budget and didn't go too out there with the design. Greg Blee I find quite arrogant though, and as if he finds these small budget projects as beneath him....

OutandIntoday · 17/11/2017 16:52

The bbc version is a spin off of the 100k house format.

8pawsgood · 17/11/2017 16:55

....Hey architects design me something I can't afford...Every goddam week it's the same. Angry

Terrylene · 17/11/2017 17:08

The over budget one last night did seem particularly cruel as they had to totally redesign and the client said she did feel disappointed, having seen the first design which was a long, long way of 80 grand.......

I am not sure they actually did all that for 112 though.

I was also puzzled as to why she hadn't sat in the window seat beforeConfused

TheJunctionBaby · 17/11/2017 20:56

I like George Clarke, but it slightly annoys me how he pronounces it 'ARR-ee-tecks'

Bombardier25966 · 17/11/2017 21:03

All the staging furniture is removed after filming.

I pass last night's property often. I assumed it was a row of garages. It still looks like a row of garages now.

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 18/11/2017 16:46

Does the new brickwork look good, Bombardier?
Another budget buster but this time the experts seemed more grounded. I liked the end result and considering the sequence of poor workmanship uncovered as this project went on, the final sum wasn't as bad as I expected.

changemyname1 · 23/11/2017 22:22

Well they didn't disappoint tonight, that was the most ugly house ive seen, by the end of the programme

IhaveChillyToes · 23/11/2017 23:05

Well it was certainly different!!!!!!

They were very happy with it though and I think honestly happy this time SmileSmileSmile

TheSpottedZebra · 23/11/2017 23:13

£100k house was great. The main architect (Piers?) seemed able to respect the owners' budget, and used to show interesting ways to achieve certain effects for not much at all, and could discuss de-speccing without getting offended.

And he didn't cover everything in black cladding, although perhaps he does, now it's 2017?

crisscrosscranky · 25/11/2017 20:23

Did anyone see this week's monstrosity? I can't believe they could do that under PD rights!

IhaveChillyToes · 25/11/2017 21:22

And the COW!!!!!

GrinGrinGrinGrin

crisscrosscranky · 25/11/2017 21:25

Yes, if they were worried about people staring at their unremarkable bungalow before god knows what people do now!

I was almost willing they'd bring back the hideous black cladding they've used every other week.

AJPTaylor · 25/11/2017 21:29

Just watched it. Rarely have i enjoyed a programme more. Buy a 2 bed bungalow in gods waiting room and cover it in rusty sheeting and line with plywood. Put a model cow outside.
Its my lasting regret that the didnt get any broadcastable comments from the neighbours on the finished article. It was amazing. Take an "ugly house" aka a bungalow and 65k later you have an unsalable more ugly house.

IhaveChillyToes · 25/11/2017 21:49

Mind you the cow would mean people look at the cow rather than into the Windows

squiz81 · 27/11/2017 21:17

All the staging furniture is removed after filming

Is the furniture we see at the end reveal not the homeowners or their choice then? I have wondered before if they get an interior designer as it always seems done very well (and much better than in their previous house)

Ekphrasis · 27/11/2017 21:48

I don’t know but it’s likely they employ local architects to actually deliver the work. The on screen Architect does a bit of the design but then hands it over to locals. It’ll be listed in credits if so. (I know someone who was the employed architect while Piers (I think) was the on screen one.)

Ekphrasis · 27/11/2017 21:49

Nope all the furniture and even some of the garden is taken back at the end. (Insider knowledge!) it’s dressed for the show.

Wow! Good knowledge. This makes so much sense now. Especially with huge cow house, when he said what the final spend was i couldnt compute how that could include furnishings too. Im going to keep a close eye out now for the same things reappearing on the show Grin

Ekphrasis · 28/11/2017 07:19

I think it’s lent/ borrowed by local shops or stores?
