Hillary Clinton talking about how women need to be assertive about getting their voices heard. She leaves. And a sofa full of men take her place.

Last series was 23 women vs 35 men so no not 50% but hardly token women

bluebells1 · 20/10/2017 23:56

Hillary Clinton talking about women being heard and being assertive. There is Irony right there!

MyBabyIsAWerewolfAhwooooo · 20/10/2017 23:56

And this series as listed so far is 12 women to 17 men.

Considering the women on are there promoting their ""art"" I think its more offensive to aiggeat their tokenistic gestures rather than genuine guests

donquixotedelamancha · 20/10/2017 23:57

Hilary was the headline. She got around half the time on her own. None of the men got anywhere near as much interaction and attention as her. Two big hollywood stars were very clearly second fiddle to an elderly female politician.

There are plenty of shows where the OPs comment is valid, but complaining about this episode (and probably Graham Norton in general) seems ridiculous.

MyBrilliantDisguise · 20/10/2017 23:58

Women always count themselves lucky if there are 50% women on a panel.

SauvignonBlanche · 21/10/2017 20:25

So HRC got the sofa on her own and the men had to share with two others?
Not sure I get the 'irony'. Hmm

viques · 21/10/2017 20:50

There is an interesting interview with Geena Davies in today's Guardian. She has set up a monitoring group looking at how women are portrayed in films and on US TV.

Worth a read.

Your point about how women arepo portrayed and represented isn't invalid. But this episode of this show was a bizarre example

BertrandRussell · 22/10/2017 08:11

If there are 30% women in any situation they are perceived as being in the majority.......

MiddleClassProblem · 22/10/2017 13:21

Same with people of colour...

ukelelebanana · 22/10/2017 13:37

Same with people of colour

In what way is it the same?

MiddleClassProblem · 22/10/2017 14:38

All of this but as a woman of colour I have never been affronted by an all male white couch as that’s just how it works out with who’s promoting what. OP is saying how women are a minority in the show but there are plenty when there are only white people. I’m nearly pointing out that she is attempting to say this isn’t right but ignoring something else that is probably more unbalanced.

As I say I have no issue with it. I think all of this is someone really trying to make an issue where there isn’t.

AmericanPastoral · 22/10/2017 14:55

I think there are usually more men than women and the women allowed on tend to be young and pretty. The men can be a dishevelled mess and as old as Harrison Ford. I know you do get the likes of Jane Fonda but it is much more common to have 3 men of varying ages and appearance and a young pretty woman.

StaySexyDontGetMurdered · 22/10/2017 15:03

Hilary was the headline. She got around half the time on her own. None of the men got anywhere near as much interaction and attention as her. Two big hollywood stars were very clearly second fiddle to an elderly female politician

Exactly. I agree with your points OP but I don't think this was a good example. I have noticed more and more strong and intelligent women on the telly these days though, not all of them have been good looking either. It's still not equal but it is getting better.

chemenger · 22/10/2017 15:56

Average age of male guests on the last series of GN (by my quick calculations) 45.3 yrs. Average age of female guests 45.4 yrs. There were 8 guests under 30, all but one male. 36% of the men and 40% of the women were under 40. 6 guests were over 70, three male, three female.

Aderyn17 · 22/10/2017 16:20

Would this be the Hilary Clinton who stood by Bill, with his dubious history? The same Hilary Clinton who fucked up her campaign so badly, the US public preferred Donald Trump?
Frankly, I've heard enough from her.

BertrandRussell · 22/10/2017 17:30

It would be interesting to see how many of the women are over 40.......

BertrandRussell · 22/10/2017 17:31

Oh, I see someone already has!

Beingrippedoff · 22/10/2017 18:16

GN quite often has older women on his show e.g. Judi Dench is always on, Helen Mirren on fairly often etc

donquixotedelamancha · 22/10/2017 18:43

"Would this be the Hilary Clinton who stood by Bill, with his dubious history?"

I really do think these type of criticisms, of which there are others above, are daft. She chose not to end a marriage because of infidelity. Lots of women make the same choice- it is their right.

The suggestions by self avowed sex predator Donald Trump that she is misogynistic for not meeting/consoling with the women who fucked her husband (even if some were taken advantage of) would be a sick joke if it hadn't worked.

CatAfterCat · 23/10/2017 16:38

I was extremely impressed with HC. I've only ever seen her on a platform making speeches to thousands. This was quite different, she was relaxed, funny, articulate and passionate.

Aderyn17 · 23/10/2017 18:08

It wasn't just infidelity though was it? He was president and ML was an intern. An abuse of his position imo. Iirc there are other allegations against BC wrt inappropriate behaviour towards women.

Not exactly the same as forgiving an affair between two equals.
