"sometimes everyone has to go outside of their comfort zone for the people they love."

Ugh. I don't have ASD but I do have sensory overload and it's a constant struggle

More important to save that trauma for really important stuff E.g. When people are ill etc

Lotsawobblybits · 24/10/2017 17:03

I don't know if anyone is interested but Chris Packham has posted This on his blog, it is quite interesting & thoughtful about the programme.

He is now acting as a patron for the National Autistic Society.

Thanks for posting the link Lotsa.
Maybe he will go to his SD's graduation after all, if the University are on board with helping him cope with it.

grannytomine · 25/10/2017 12:13

I hoped he would somehow manage to go to his step daughters graduation, sometimes everyone has to go outside of their comfort zone for the people they love. I agree, he can cope with flying to America, he can cope with a TV studio, if I was her I would be very hurt. My husband is disabled and the university were wonderful when we went to my son's graduation, we used a different entrance to avoid stairs, didn't have to queue with everyone else. I am sure adjustments can be made.

JustDanceAddict · 25/10/2017 15:54

I hope he can get to the graduation too.

Nothingrhymeswithfamily · 25/10/2017 16:14

I love the pps note at the bottom of that post he put on the blog.

I watched it, it was wonderful. The American wanting to cure attitude was awful, it was the heads big grin. But the Silicon Valley bit was brilliant.

Inkanta · 28/10/2017 15:47

Yes he can cope with the TV studio and all the staff around very well. Wouldn't have thought the graduation would be too painful. Maybe he doesn't grasp how much his step- daughter would like him to be there - with him not being able to do empathy

Inkanta

Crass comment. I'd leave this between him and his stepdaughter

Ironic lack of empathy from you.

Inkanta · 29/10/2017 07:25

Not my intention Yoda. I think I spotted an empathy gap in that interaction and I think it's relevant to share. Chris acknowledged that he has a problem with empathy and this programme is designed to help us understand Asperger's through Chris. It's gained as much from observing how he interacts as it is listening to his story. I got the impression he has a good relationship with his step-daughter, his partner and sister but it was very useful to witness problem areas (that he had identified), such as the empathy gaps, during his conversations.

I’ve just watched this programme and I was blown away by the honesty and integrity of Chris Packham. Hats off to him for making this very revealing programme. He is brilliant.
