9pm.
ITV.
Looking forward to it but not sure it will be able to compete with the Amanda Root/Ciaran Hinds version.

rupert penry jones

something was lacking, IMO casting of Capt Wentworth was all wrong.

Well I quite enjoyed it, but Rupert P-J was just too young and pretty: nice to look at, but not right. And I was getting really annoyed at the soulful looks Anne kept giving the camera - I started predicting them from the first ad break onwards, and swearing at the tv. I think Sally Hawkins was pretty good as Anne, and her family wonderfully dippy. But I was a bit annoyed that they changed the way the ending worked.

When is it repeated? Was out and forgot to sky+ it.

Thanks

thethirdwiseeasterbunny · 02/04/2007 09:52

Rupert PJ was very pretty and lovely but I kept wondering if the actress playing Anne had forgotten her words. She spent a lot of time with a wobbly lip, looking as though she was thinking erm..................

choosyfloosy · 02/04/2007 09:53

they changed the ending? WTF?

sorry didn't see this! - what happened? Did Anne decide to go off and captain a ship instead or something?

Blackduck · 02/04/2007 09:54

Root/Hinds version SO much better.....

Blackduck · 02/04/2007 09:54

They combined the alternative and the published ending (JA wrote two endings...)

choosyfloosy · 02/04/2007 10:06

oooh bd i had no idea.

sunnysideup · 02/04/2007 10:25

agree, the Roots/Hinds version will just not be bettered.

Rupert Penry Jones will need another 20 yrs of life before he looks at all weatherbeaten enough for that role, looked like he's never worked in his life let alone had a hard life at sea! And found Anne just looked like a stuffed frog when she was supposed to be feeling these overwhelming emotions.

Marina · 02/04/2007 10:30

I thought her sister Mary was most excellently grotesque though - always felt Sophie Thompson was too endearing for that role in the Hinds/Root one.
I thought Sally Hawkins was good - in the context of a less convincing production all round. The direction was very insensitive to the period, I felt - "waltzing" on the lawn of Kellynch at the end, eg
And R P-J just looked as though he was wondering where his styling products had got to, IMO. He's not got that great a range, has he?

roisin · 02/04/2007 10:31

I must admit at the end of this I just thought I would definitely like to see Rupert PJ in something else ; but agree he wasn't suitable for this role.

What else has he been in apart from Spooks?

sunnysideup · 02/04/2007 10:48

Lol Marina, that's very diplomatically put about RPJ's lack of 'range'!!! Also agree about the Waltzing, totally out of period!

JackieNo · 02/04/2007 10:50

Blackduck - I didn't know that about 2 endings either. Wonder where I can find the alternative ending?

JackieNo · 02/04/2007 10:51

Marina - I agree - Mary was good. She reminded me of the Julie Walters doddery waitress with the soup character from the Victoria Wood series, for some reason.

Blackduck · 02/04/2007 10:57

I knew that English degree would come in useful . The Penguin edition used to have the alternative ending in it (only alternative from the POV of how they get together...). I HATED Mary - she really jarred for me...

ArcticRoll · 02/04/2007 11:02

I thought it was ok.
Sally Hawkins was quite good but agree with Dior that her looking directly at camera was rather annoying.
Agree with others that Rupert PJ wasn't up to the job of Wentworth, although very pleasant to look up.
Anne's family were great, enjoyed the hideous father and sisters.
Alice Krige as Lady Russell was good although very similar to her role in The Line of Beauty.

ooo! i thought it was lovely and a lovely wallow... though i must admit i have not read it... shame on me!... is it a classic case of if you've read the book the tv/film never comes up to scratch!?

what were the two endings then????

Clary · 02/04/2007 11:11

Yes I hated her chasing round Bath to find him. love the book where she tells him she still lvoes him when speaking to someone else and he writes the passionate note.

Didn't know there were 2 endings tho (must research more)

sunnysideup · 02/04/2007 11:24

yes, the bit where he can hear her saying that women 'love the longest, when all hope is gone' is soooooo gripping, and then the note "you pierce my soul" oh swoon!

I think that was a real missed opportunity last night, her saying the bit about loving the longest not in hearing of Wentworth. Fell flat for me.

saadia · 02/04/2007 11:52

To me it just seemed like "Austen-by-numbers", trying to include some aspects of BBC past productions and that was also the case with ITV's Mansfield Park. Also think that although Sally Hawkins was OK, there was too much of a mismatch in terms of attractiveness levels between her and Wentworth - he should have been older and more appreciative of her qualities - there didn't seem to be any chemistry.

MarsLady · 02/04/2007 11:54

At the risk of repeating myself.... lol

When is it repeated please?

foxinsocks · 02/04/2007 11:56

I think it's the first time I've ever seen Rupert P-J smile (and he has, on last night's evidence, a lovely smile!) and laugh.

I found myself shouting at the screen too. I just can't get the angst - I just want to scream 'oh ffs, just get yer leg over woman' which means they probably didn't manage to portray the period the way they wanted to .
