Anyone watching?

Yes
The young girl with the drawer that opened...shouldn't her dad just get her a new chest of drawers

ArseholesOnToast · 22/08/2017 23:03

I was thinking the same about the drawers. Having them slide open would annoy most people.

Sparklingbrook · 22/08/2017 23:12

DH and I said the same. If I had a chest of drawers and the drawers randomly opened it would drive me mad.

RightOnTheEdge · 22/08/2017 23:16

I have a filing cabinet who's drawers open by themselves all the time it's so annoying.

That programme made me feel so sad for them all Sad

MrsOH04 · 23/08/2017 00:16

I also said the same to dh about the drawers, but has he already tried that and she had a massive panic attack? It must be an awful thing to live with.

Did anyone else notice the marks on the on the arm of the one who was getting married?

OP posts:
Sparklingbrook · 23/08/2017 08:35

I felt really sorry for them all. It must be exhausting.
And as family it must be really hard to watch and not be able to help.

MrsOH04 · 23/08/2017 08:48

Definitely Sparkling.

I haven't watched it yet, not sure I can. Was it sympathetic to the sufferers and families? Or was it voyeuristic?

My beautiful DS, 22, has OCD; he would say he is OCD. It consumes his life and is a prison for him. To complicate matters he is alson physically disabled so relies on me and my DH to clean and change his clothes and bedding.

He has intrusive thoughts that prevent him from relaxing and doing anything. He started doing a OU degree and did incredibly well in his last course, 99%. I'm so proud of him as, because of his intrusive thoughts, studying took up all his time. Sadly he's now too ill to carry on.
We have been banging on doors desperately trying to get the right help for him (and us) but are not getting anywhere.

I hope the series helps people understand how destructive OCD is. I also hope that it gives some success stories as I am desperate for some hope.

joolspoon · 23/08/2017 10:00

What marks on her arm?

VeraGrant · 23/08/2017 16:40

JangleBangle I haven't watched the programme but I can say that a close relative of mine was effectively 'cured' of crippling, longstanding OCD via exposure response prevention therapy. It was nothing short of a miracle.

Unfortunately she had to go through many ineffective treatments first as not many therapists work with ERP yet (the only real proven treatment). Have a google! Very best of luck

Sparklingbrook · 23/08/2017 16:56

I did notice there were 2 marks on her arm. I also found it interesting that although she had a problem with bodily fluids she had had a tattoo.

Jangle I think it was sympathetic. I didn't realise it was a series. There didn't seem much in the way of information as to how they were going to overcome their OCD.

Maybe as the series progresses we will learn more.

JangleBangle · 23/08/2017 19:03

Thank you, VeraGrant, that sounds poitiers. I'll look into it and see whether it's available locally. And if not, I will fight for it!

Thanks for the reassurance Sparkling, I will watch it.

ArseholesOnToast · 23/08/2017 20:17

One of the people featured was Jamie (I think!) who had to drop out of medical school due to his OCD. He would spend hours checking his appointments so he didn't miss anything. So sad as he said he would have graduated as a doctor by now.

As others said what struck me was how utterly exhausting it must be for them. One girl (Katie) was doing her a levels and part of her OCD was a tapping routine. She said it was so boring but she was compelled to do it.

Another woman featured was getting married and she'd tried various therapies and said that exposure therapy was by far the most effective for her.

I hope your son finds an effective treatment Janglebangle and can go on to continue his OU success or whatever he chooses Flowers

JangleBangle · 23/08/2017 21:13

Thank you Toast (your username intrigues me!) for the summary. It sounds like it might be helpful for my DS to watch. He feels sich a freak and often talks about suicide as he feels he'll never be able to lead a normal life. It could help him to see that he's not the early one.
Thank you too for the well wishes.

MrsOH04 · 23/08/2017 23:22

Sparkling that's what I thought, she had tattoos but was very OCD with regards to bodily fluids.
I found it very sympathetic to people with OCD.
I noticed the marks on her arm as I work on a mental health ward and see similar marks.

I do very often go back and check the front door is locked, or go back and check my curling tongs are switched off. But I think that's anxiety, not OCD.

I did find it interesting that the one girl in the programme did the routine because she thought something would happen to other people, she wasn't worried about something happening to her if she didn't do it.

MrsOH04 · 23/08/2017 23:45

Yes that was interesting, imagine how shit she'll feel if something happened to someone, through no reason at all apart from the way life goes, I felt so sorry for all of them.

OP posts:
JangleBangle · 24/08/2017 07:31

I can understand about the tattoo as there is no logic to OCD. And the rules and boundaries always change.
For example my DS won't let our dog into his bedroom as he considers him dirty. If the dog touches him or his wheelchair, he has to go for a shower and have the chair cleaned. But our two cats are welcomed into his room and onto his bed where he'll cuddle up with them.

MrsOH04 · 24/08/2017 07:46

That's true Jangle.
