Is anyone else looking forward to the return of Victoria on Sunday ? I will miss Lord Melbourne as I haven't read Rufus Sewell is returning but I can hope Smile

I was wondering whether there's doubts about a series 3 being commissioned so is that why so many things are being shoehorned into series 2 . Also from reading the Victoria biographies there was a Baron Stockmar who was a mentor /close adviser to all of the family yet he hasn't featured in either series at all . I do enjoy Victoria but as a pedantic for things being in chronological order it drives me bananas when things happen all out of sync . They get some things so right such as the wording about Dash but other things very wrong . It reminds me of Downton in that part of the watching included noticing clunky modern dialogue such as when Tom talked about being on a learning curve (going way off topic here ! )

Chicken "I do enjoy Victoria but as a pedantic for things being in chronological order it drives me bananas when things happen all out of sync"

yes. But if they wanted to shoehorn this particular incident of Lord M, they could have - sort of - stuck to the truth and still got a lot of emotion out of it. Also what was the point of making Peel PM earlier?

Slimthistime · 11/09/2017 15:20

PS if they stretch this series out without going at least 5-10 years ahead it will be quite dull?

but then if they want to go way past Albert's death they will need to make up Jenna Coleman ageing or switch actresses.

I bet the Xmas special will centre on Albert and Christmas trees and be totally out of sync with history as well.

Slimthistime · 11/09/2017 15:27

just looked it up
book ends with Victoria proposing

sorry for all the posts

Chickenpie9 · 11/09/2017 17:35

slim I found quite a sad quote about Lord M in real life where he goes by Buckingham Palace in mid 1840s and all the lights are on and he misses being part of Victoria's life .
Definitely agree there's only so long Jenna Coleman could play Victoria without resorting to age effects .
There's a part of me which resents getting too invested in any ITV dramas after Home Fires wasn't renewed after two series , much as I complain about lack of accuracy I do actually find Victoria decent viewing for a Sunday night .

Chicken, that is sad.

I am going to go along with "everyone has watched it" so if you haven't, look away now......

in some ways the truth about Lord M and Victoria, at the end, is sadder than has been portrayed - at least the bond was there in the show. I mean, for storyline purposes, extremely well done of course.

the biog I'm reading (A.N.Wilson) says that when he passed she was quite unbothered, partly because so much time had passed and partly she was so bogged down with the six children she already had. That made me sad, as I did think - even from my A Level days - that they had a good friendship.

.

Chickenpie9 · 11/09/2017 18:49

I think he was the first adult relationship she had of any kind and agree that at least the way things happened in the series they were still close , I did find last night's scene when she went to Brocket Hall so sad as they both knew it was the last time they would see each other but couldn't say it . I definitely want to read more about Victoria would love to read a book of her diaries as although they're online I find it difficult to read them on screen although they were apparently edited quite heavily .

Do you have a link to that blog, slim?

Slimthistime · 11/09/2017 19:00

Chicken, you might like this? (I haven't seen a copy)
www.amazon.co.uk/Victoria-Letters-Official-Companion-ITV/dp/0008196834/ref=tmm_hrd_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1505152763&sr=1-1&tag=mumsnetforum-21

Beyond, I'm reading a biog, not a blog - sorry, I should have typed biography in full because that's easy to misread, apologies.

It's this one
www.amazon.co.uk/Victoria-Life-N-Wilson/dp/184887958X/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1505152618&sr=8-1&tag=mumsnetforum-21

tbh I'm not sure I'd choose it - someone upthread recommended a different one - but it was the one in the library. I'd have preferred a chronological biography, I think you need to know some stuff already in order to really make the most of this one. I do know a little but not loads.

Chickenpie9 · 11/09/2017 20:20

Thanks Slim that looks interesting ! I have sat and watched the first episode of series 1 of Victoria again forgot how much was crammed into that one episode and about some of the earlier characters like the Grand Duke and Lady Flora .

OP posts:
dollybird · 11/09/2017 22:24

Slim, I have read the companion to series 1, it was really interesting. They did say that a lot of the below stairs stuff was unknown as they don't know the names of many of the staff, so the tv characters are based on those they know about.

Apparently her dog died in 1940, soon after the first baby was born. It also said the Ernest had syphilis which he passed onto his wife (it was recommended he didn't marry). He was like his father.

catwithflowers · 16/09/2017 06:50

But more importantly, where can I find a beautiful bird cage like the one Victoria gave to Lord M? I am lusting after one shallow 😉

QuiQuaiQuod · 18/09/2017 12:26

Anyone there who watched it last night?

ooh, 'uncle' Leopald! Is that story actually factual?
Tom Hughes acting was brilliant in the confrontation scene with him.

Hope Francatelli and Skerrit are back on!

So Vic preffered her dogs to the kids? I like the actor playing the PM. Hes good. (miss Melbourne though).

BeyondNoone · 18/09/2017 13:05

Oo, apparently it's a maybe... www.telegraph.co.uk/tv/0/victoria-prince-albert-really-illegitimate-son-uncle-leopold/

Chickenpie9 · 18/09/2017 13:46

Now Skerrit secret is out will we still have to have the story of her going back to help out her sister/cousin all the time ? Felt for both Victoria and Albert separately in last nights episode you could see Victoria's reliance on Albert has begun and Albert thrown by the revelation about his father . Although not sure that's historically accurate at all but it gave Albert a chance to shine I thought .

OP posts:
Slimthistime · 18/09/2017 19:58

Is it just me that was really bored with it then?

it's like each individual scene goes on too long - not at all the model they followed in the previous series.

I really like Skerritt and I thought they handled the staff storyline well with suspicion falling on Mr Francatelli etc but the rest of it, I just found really dull. I'm guessing now Skerritt's cousin will find a different way to blackmail her? Doesn't make sense because then her income would dry up but she does seem so ragingly jealous of Skerritt. I do feel really sorry for her having her life ruined like that of course.

oh and I had forgotten how much I dislike Victoria's mum!

It struck me that most of the really interesting stuff from Victoria's reign is later isn't it. I wonder what viewing figures are like for this season? From friends, colleagues and Twitter, it seems like it's just me that is finding it slow going this season.

Some scholars think Victoria is illegitimate as well I think - though there's probably speculation about every monarch.

Chickenpie9 · 18/09/2017 21:03

I think the Skerrit storyline needs to end now . From what I have saw next weeks episode is set in France so hopefully that will be a different story . I think there was so much going on with Victoria and her children and John Brown and the Kaiser etc that her later years would make interesting viewing I found a 70s tv series Edward VII on YouTube which seems to cover a lot of the later days of Victoria's reign and if you ignore the 70s style filming it is not bad at all .
Also wondering where all the uncles from series 1 have went to the one who really hated her who had the scary wife ?

OP posts:
Slimthistime · 18/09/2017 21:16

Chickenpie, do you mean the Duke of Cumberland? I loved it when he said "Do you think, if I were planning to commit regicide, I would use a half wit from south of the river?" (the "south of the river" being the bit that made me lol so hysterically, yes, I am a north Londoner!)

I think after Victoria safely gave birth, he got out of the way. He was pretty unpopular in the UK I think - well, the others in the Lords didn't like him and I suppose there's the "OMD it's a German" thing but obviously Albert got round that.

TheLegendOfBeans · 18/09/2017 21:41

Maybe is because I'm 35 weeks pregnant but I absolutely lose my - erm - countenance every week at this programme.

Wept when:

  • Diana Rigg confided in Victoria about feeling out of sorts after having a baby
  • Dash died
  • the scene where Victoria gives Lord M the caged bird
  • the last scene where you see Victoria, her mother and the new baby all together

I think a lot of it is also wrapped up in the fact that DH looks (and is a bit closed like) Albert so when he's sad it makes it a bit "more real".

YES I'm hormonal.

Slimthistime · 18/09/2017 22:00

Legend, Dash and Lord M were heartbreaking and very well done - apart from the history, lol.

I liked Dash's little face though of course they will have had at least 3 for filming I reckon....!

QuiQuaiQuod · 25/09/2017 12:14

okay. the wet men episode!

surely the gay guys are being a bit too obvius and no one seems to be noticing? I thought Albert or Ernest were noticing that.

Ernest--did he ever learn from the shenanigans of his father?

Chickenpie9 · 25/09/2017 14:20

Thought it was a bit of a strange episode I got the series 2 companion book and the scriptwriter is at pains to to tell you that almost all of the things we see on screen did happen in real life she didn't mention the wet men though !
On an aside has anyone saw Victoria and Abdul I saw it at the weekend and thought it was good but was surprised how many of the Queen's family were left out of it even though she had at least one of her daughters and her daughers children living with her . Found the end very sad and from what I've read it reflected what happened to the real life Abdul

OP posts:
Slimthistime · 25/09/2017 15:06

so boring last night. I'm not sure I cba to carry on watching - it's as if I don't know what happens to Victoria and they would need skip very far ahead for it to be more interesting.

diddl · 25/09/2017 21:51

I enjoyed seeing Harlaxton Manor & that was it!

Slimthistime · 26/09/2017 16:50

diddl, glad not just us!

Viewing figures have risen each week apparently so clearly in the minority.
