It is an expensive place, some subsidised places but mostly buy your own. And i agree the older people are quite up together. Id like to see more impaired people for a proper experiment. Nice entertainment tho

It is so lovely. Dd's primary did inter generational learning so visits to old people and old people coming into school happened all year round. Dd's grandparents died before she was born she got a huge amount from the ones she met in and outside school. Dd loved that they made History real for her bringing real memories and items from the past. Some taught dd to knit and crochet and embroider others made birdboxes with her lots gardened, lovely shared activities. They attended Christmas lunch, Carol concerts, assemblies, fayres and any occasion that they could fit in and enjoy. A brilliant experience for them all I think and it built strong links between school and the community.

Glad they still visit. That's just lovely.

We have an old lady help weekly at my school. She hears the infant children read, runs a knitting club and teaches craft skills to the Year 6s. She makes wonderful things to sell at the summer/Christmas fayres with them and helps them run the stall (entrepreneurship). The school was her saviour when her husband died 5 years ago.

She has never had a child or grandchild at the school; it was her neighbour saying the school needed parents to help with reading but neighbour could not do it due to having a young baby. 30 years later, aged 86 she is still giving a day of her week to the school... and still hearing the little ones read. 6 years ago the teachers and a pupils nominated her secretly for an MBE. I will never forget her face walking into my classroom clutching her letter from the Cabinet Office. Sadly, she did not make the garden party it the palace as her husband was too ill.

It was a lovely programme, hope they keep visiting the elderly people. The Dutch lady really blossomed, and the children were so sweet.

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 03/08/2017 13:27

Nice that the children’s parents got to meet the participants. Linda looked a lot happier and certainly her mobility had improved.

ggirl · 03/08/2017 18:53

@Oldowl aww lovely story ..schools should use the elderly more as a resource to help children.

impostersyndrome · 03/08/2017 21:37

I loved it. Though I watched it through a veil of tears to see the loneliness. I was so glad to see they're continuing the contact.

This should be done as standard. And those beautiful grounds! Masses of space that could be used by the children if there was a nursery there.
