I do like this programme but wish they didnt use families who spend £150/200 so easy to cut down and save money

It's always people buying brand names and ready meals etc so cooking from scratch Obv saves

And use families who spend £50/70 a week and really could use the extra £10/15 they may save

And love it when they try something and say it's horrible and it's their original brand 😂😂😂😂

This programme is referred to as 'An hour of stating the bleeding obvious' in our house.

Same as the 'live well for less' programme.

Spend less money on shit and then you'll have more for other stuff.

In other news, water is wet and Gregg Wallace is annoying.

RebootYourEngine · 17/06/2017 13:23

Watched the second episode last night.

How could he think that buy 'bunging in a couple' of items that they dont need is saving money.

Id love to see them save me money. I buy a variety from branded right through to supermarkets budget brand. I dont waste, i write a weekly meal plan and a shopping list everytime i go to the shop. I cook from scratch. I dont buy something because its on offer, but only when i need it. Yet i still feel like i spend a fortune every week. I do a monthly shop and i spend about £100 on everything not just food, then weekly i spend about £30 on top up shops. I cant see where i could save money.

Cagliostro · 17/06/2017 13:58

Ooh I've just realised that there are 2 episodes of Shop well for less that I haven't seen yet. I'll catch up on those first - I could do with stocking up on Stating the Bleeding Obvioud (excellent name!)

Cagliostro · 17/06/2017 13:58

Well it would be if I wrote it properly. Obviously I meant 'obvious' :o

Blondeshavemorefun · 17/06/2017 20:32

reboot maybe contact them and say you would like to be on the programme /save money and see what they say ......

Just watched the first two episodes. I enjoyed this more than previous series, I don't think they've had such a focus on replacing takeaways before.

It always makes me feel guilty though, I spend a lot more than necessary on convenience stuff when my health is bad, and I know it seems lazy

RebootYourEngine · 17/06/2017 21:59

Blonde i might do that. However i dont think i would be interesting enough for tv Grin

RebootYourEngine · 17/06/2017 22:00

I have just done a quiz on the eat well webpage. Apparently i am an impulse buyer Confused something wrong there.

Xmasbaby11 · 18/06/2017 15:47

It was the three bottles of squash a week I was aghast at!

I thought the meals this week were a bit basic - a kebab with a bit of salad, not very substantial.

I don't really trust the taste tests either as we eat a lot of humous and I don't like the Lidl one at all!

cheapskatemum · 20/06/2017 21:37

I find supermarkets fiddle around with their own brand products too, for example, I used to love Sainsbury's lemon & coriander humous, then they changed the recipe & I'm meh about it now.

qazxc · 21/06/2017 20:34

This episode is so sad 😢.
Am bloody shocked at the amount they spend on snacks though.

EssentialHummus · 21/06/2017 20:39

I'm feeling very sad for them Sad

StandardLampski · 21/06/2017 21:19

Why was it sad? I missed the start and was aware she was referencing something in the future but missed what....

foxessocks · 21/06/2017 21:23

She has incurable breast cancer standard was hoping to pay for some non NHS treatment to give her more time with her family

StandardLampski · 21/06/2017 21:29

That's horrible, poor family. Thank you for responding

claritytobeclear · 22/06/2017 11:23

I must say, that, whilst have the greatest sympathy for the family, I don't think the programme dealt well with the mother's seeking alternative (to the NHS) treatment. It seemed to suggest that she absolutely required this extremely expensive treatment, that is unlicensed on the NHS, yet this was uncorroborated by any medical experts. It appeared like the NHS had left her in the lurch, so to speak.

I have been diagnosed with breast cancer myself and unlicensed treatment, I think, would need a whole programme or series of programmes dedicated to it, to do this incredible complex and sometimes political subject, any justice at all.

This is essentially a lighthearted affordable heathy eating programme which my young teen likes watching. I hope it does not cause unnecessary worry.

Helenluvsrob · 23/06/2017 08:21

Clarity. This is payment for extra treatment beyond NHS evidence based ones. It may not be crack pot alternatives just weakly evidenced ones that the NHS can't afford. It was mentioned at the end of the hospital program that Charring cross offers similar. I shall watch that next episode.

I'm afraid it made me very sad. They weren't saving for a holiday or something optional. The amount of stuff the dad refused - I wanted to slap him with his floor sweeping muesli ! I'd be on basic everything and skipping meals if my husbands length of life depended on it.

EssentialHummus · 23/06/2017 08:54

I agree with this. Either we didn't have the full picture / the programme was playing up their need to save money or similar, but if that was my husband we'd be selling the house and cutting every cost imaginable to raise the money. I didn't understand this.

claritytobeclear · 23/06/2017 11:26

I too found the Dad annoying. It is part of the reason I think the programme dealt badly with the subject of the treatment the family wanted to save for. Looking back, I wonder what their daughters will think? Their pickiness to blame for family's finance issues? Their Dad's? It could give anyone terrible issues with guilt.

This type of programme really cannot deal sufficiently with such a complex and potentially harrowing subject, of whether to opt for treatment, not available through the NHS. Or why it might be unavailable. You would definitely need expert medical opinions to be included, to cover the subject adequately, at all. There are far too many unanswered questions concerning the coverage in this programme.

Blondeshavemorefun · 23/06/2017 17:54

Finally seen. Can't believe they are paying /finding £1700 every 3w

Seems an insane amount of money to prolong a life - don't mean that horribly

And yes I got the impression NHS could do no more hence the private treatment

Food. As always there's something they say they hate and it's their usual brand. Brown Sauce this time 😂

Agree dad could have swapped more to save money

YellowLawn · 23/06/2017 19:27

the extra treatment (probably one of the new cancer drugs - licensed but not payed for by nhs) might mean another year or 2 for the mum, most of which with reasonable quality of life.
I also would make that happen if I possibly could!

claritytobeclear · 23/06/2017 20:19

Yellow, possibly but the programme did not specify this.

I just think it is unfair to skim over such details, in such a normally lighthearted programme. Especially for families facing cancer treatments who might be left feeling that the treatment offered on the NHS is insufficient. Thankfully my own DC did not seem to overly pick up on this theme from the programme but if they had they could have been left very upset.

The place to discuss treatments not offered on the NHS would be a carefully researched and balanced separate documentary IMO.

MinniesAndMickeysNeedCounting · 24/06/2017 13:11

I didn't think the programme insinuated that the nhs had let her down, it seemed clear that they understandably wanted to fund a potentially life extending treatment.

I don't mean this to sound in any way disrespectful but it's a food consumer programme and therefore shouldn't go into the treatments offered or not offered privately or on in the nhs.

I don't feel there were unanswered questions because the programme wasn't about the mums prognosis.

CaptainHammer · 24/06/2017 16:49

xmasbaby we made the kebabs when it was really hot weather last week as something smallish and easy to do. They were lovely!

I don't normally bother with these types of programmes but I love the look of embarrassment when they find out the things that "have definitely been swapped" haven't at all Grin

MinniesAndMickeysNeedCounting · 24/06/2017 18:32

Captain I was going to make the kebab receipe, glad it was nice, think I deleted the programme, will have to check if it's in the website.

I've made several things off this programme, the best was a beer and beef shin stew, lovely
