I found someone in the US who posts episode reviews (bear in mind their schedule is ahead of ours). I like her sense of humour:

I hope there will be a 3rd series. I love it.

I'm glad Marchal is back too.

Will there be a third season?

The 3rd season is currently being filmed. The Twitter feed is nice - pics of series 2 off duty actors etc and tweets from the Chevalier and Phillipe (actors)

ah, my friends, I have found you. Loving this series and agree re Phillippe, his fab new wife, poor Sophie, bitch Montpasan, and I was gutted when doctor lady got it. I really wanted her and Marchal to get together and have babies.

I would love to go there and see the palace one day too, the sheer scale of it blows my mind.

Anyone watch Reign on Netflix? About Mary Q of Scots? I heard it was a bit Tudors-esque so thinking its totally up my street.

I'm just going to leave this here for the Philippe / Chevalier fans...

Reign is absolutely terrible.

I think it's aimed at teenage girls and there are so many historical inaccuracies and anachronisms that I couldn't watch it. I think I might have lasted about half an hour.

I too love this series and surely the hottest 2 tv brothers for many a year swoon!!

Philippe' wife is ace and I so melted when he stood up to shitty boyfriend and sided with her in last episode. (Please someone, kill off shitty boyfriend!)

Also, PLEASE finally dump Louis' bitch of a mistress once and for all!

Reign is definitely aimed for teenage girls. Though I love this period of history as well.
i wish that somebody will make the TV series based on La Reign Margot, about the illustrious grandfather of Loius and Phillipe (also Charles 2 and Henriette's). there is a French film with wonderful actors, but they are all a bit old, e.g. 40 something plays 20 something.

Loving the series but having real trouble distinguishing between all the difference kings names Louis in my chaotic grasp of French history mashed with popular TV and film. I think the Louis in Versailles is a bit later than the one in the Three Musketeers and a bit earlier than the one that was guillotine

Last episode....right at the end, is the priest guy living in the forest that Montespan visits the same priests that takes in orphaned babies?

Old guy, Grey hair, black cassock - not easy to tell her apart!!

Oooh I'm all caught up now and it's really taken on a sinister twist! Can't wait for Friday!

Still really missing that Guardian review each week, I've just subscribed for a year to the Guardian and feel I should demand my fee is spent on that for Series 3!

Report
Wormulonian · 21/06/2017 17:47

Indeed!! Apple I miss the Guardian review and discussion too. I have been longing to see Friday's episode but watch with DP who has been too busy - think I might have to sneakily watch it and then have a second go with him - I'm worried it will scroll off catch up.

I think the series has been getting better and better. They seem to be really getting comformtable with the characters now, and with what works eg Phillippe and Chavalier, and with Louis being more tormented and complex as well as more kingly.

I hope nothing happens to the the fantastic Princess Palatine :( and poor Chevalier going to pieces, bless him.

I have been resisting the tempation to read about the historical facts so I don't spoil the story!!

Good to see a series where it isn't just the women getting naked, and at least it is relevant to the racy goings on!!

Versailles was the highlight of my week. I loved the relationship between brothers Louis and Phillipe. Most gutted though that recording the show meant the commentary by mad eyed Professor Kate and her Poldark looky likey sidekick was often cut short. Those talks really helped explain the incidents in the programme and were entertaining in themselves. Bonjour!Grin

Does anyone know when Series 3 will be shown?
Loved the 2nd series, was surprised with Fabien's reaction to Sophie.

They are filming it at the moment - may be a year before the BBC show it - if they pick it up. Series 2 was shown earlier in some other countries than the BBC chose to air it.

They alluded to it in the extra bit at the end - that we would have to 'wait until series 3 to find out', I really hope they do!!

It is pretty accurate - for those who want to know and no future spoilers - there was a poison scandal and athenais was suggested, incorrectly, to be involved following her connections to a real-life 'fortune teller' who was in reality a raging alcoholic.

don't read this bit if you don't want any info on the true historical bits which come after

Athenais did fall out of favour with the king, but not until much later in life by which time they had many children rather than the one I have only ever seen referred to on the dramatisation (who died). Several died but several survived and he was good to them all and gave them titles, despite being born out of wedlock. Athenais was always held in high regard by the whole court until she was much older when she 'retired' elsewhere in her late middle age. The king always dealt kindly to her and kept her well. The only animosity shown was around the poison scandal, but that was dismissed quickly. Madame Maintenon and Louis did end up married but again, much much later on both in their 50's/60's and well after Athenais time. We know all this because of lisleottes prolific diary keeping and letter writing. By all accounts she was a real character and athenais and Marie Terese did indeed 'select' her together, and they were praised for such a good match for Phillipe. Want to know anything else? I've studied this period a lot! Happy to answer!

safe to read now
If you follow george blagden or Alex vlahos on twitter they often post behind the scenes pics or updates. And the dialogue between the actors is very, very funny.

Finally caught up on the last episode. Did Madame De Montespan know that the chalice was poisoned? Did she do it when she stayed behind in the chapel? Or is she innocent? - Bit confused. Thought she got off very lightly considering many other nobles were just buying love potions and were going to be imprisoned (I presume).

Everyone and all the settings looked beautiful and sumptuous as always - now to wait another year.

Can anyone recommend a book to read about this period - nothing heavy, maybe something historically correct but dramatised iykwim?

Report
Zhabr · 14/07/2017 22:39

Hi, I have just read a book called Monsier Montespan by Jean Teule, the story written from the point of view of Athenais's estranged husband. She was asked several times by different people "And how is your husband?" in both season 1 and 2. I found the book quite amusing.
Also Antonia Fraser's books, though not dramatised, are not heavy at all and historically correct.
