I did wonder but they were doing it before the TV show. Maybe not every week though!

I also read somewhere that lifetime set up many of the competitions for the show.

expatinscotland · 14/05/2017 15:58

'I thought it was that she filed for bankruptcy but had money hidden.
I did t realise she hadn't paid for goods and services.'

That's exactly what she did because she hid the assets she had during the bankruptcy, so the creditors didn't get paid even though she had funds to pay at least some of them, hence the fraud in bankruptcy charge. She also tried to smuggle money into another country. That's a federal crime for a very good reason.

lottieandmia · 14/05/2017 15:59

Once the girls became even a little well known they were being sent stuff anyway. Remember JoJo?

Not sure if she's facing any state charges after she serves her time in the federal pen, but it's possible.

Lyricaldancer · 14/05/2017 16:43

I thought she'd paid off the creditors, though it seems she certainly tried to evade and avoid it. Odd thing is that she was caught out and spotted because of one of her TV shows, so they knew her income must be far more than she was claiming! That's the little I remember anyway.

expatinscotland · 14/05/2017 16:52

I'll wager London to a brick she didn't pay them all back, because anyone who does that is a straight up thief out for their own ends. People like this have a vast sense of entitlement. And then there's the small matter of trying to smuggle over $100K out of the country. There's a very good reason that's a crime.

youarenotkiddingme · 14/05/2017 21:25

Yeah she tried to deposit money is Australia? I'm sure I read that somewhere?!

MarciaBlaine · 14/05/2017 21:29

I haven't RTFT but Shock. My daughter has watched this for years and I always thought she was an evil cow, and couldn't understand why the mothers put up,with it.

SailAwayWithMeHoney · 14/05/2017 21:37

Not RTFT. I'm so so shocked! Though I'm massively addicted to Dance Moms whenever it's on 5Star and the more I watch Abbey the more I genuinely worry about her. Her behaviour has become more and more erratic, I was watching the episode where Abbey threw water at Cathy so Cathy whacked her with her handbag and Abbey broke down in tears and called her mom.
And the way she talks to the kids, all the abuse and all the emotional blackmailing of the girls, punishing the kids and saying inappropriate things to the kids... I genuinely worry about her.

She filed for bankruptcy whilst trying to hide $800'000 somewhere, and tried to enter Australia carrying a large sum of undeclared cash, or something. Apparently. She pleaded guilty I think?

massively overinvested

FairNotFair · 14/05/2017 22:03

I've recently got into Dance Moms on 5Star - I work from home and it's a massive change from rolling BBC News 24! Now I'm addicted Blush - it's utterly compelling.

massiemal · 14/05/2017 22:03

The water was an accident TBF.

expatinscotland · 14/05/2017 22:11

Yes, she pled guilty to fraud in bankruptcy and concealing money earned abroad. She tried to bring it back into the US from abroad and didn't declare it (you are asked before landing if you have $10,000 or more in cash on your person/baggage and sign a statement that clearly tells you it's a federal offense to lie about this). She is quite lucky she only got the year in prison and 2 years probation after, even with having the $120,000 confiscated. The federal crime would be that $120,000. Not sure about the fraud in bankruptcy, if that's one, too, or if she'll face further charges in the state where she filed the bankruptcy since these are usually handled by state courts.

It's theft on a grand scale and there's really no defense for it at all. I mean, hey, who the hell wants to pay taxes or pay for good and services you use?

Lyricaldancer · 15/05/2017 01:00

Sounds like she was fortunate not to have been given a longer sentence.

springflowers11 · 15/05/2017 06:15

All the creditors were paid back in full. That was the main plank of her defence!
I am a gymnastics coach and tell girls to pull their tummies in and also have them critique one another's moves a.d routines. That is not being mean it is a great Lear ing tool for both parties.
Dance moms is so fake .there are several scenes when the camera is on Abby a child is speaking and Abby is unconsciously mouthing their lines. So proof positive that these incidents are scripted.
I don't like the American justice system that punishes a fat middle aged female woman for a victimless crime whilst black male celebs get off with murder and sleeping with children

lottieandmia · 15/05/2017 09:56

Spring flowers - what does skin colour have to do with anything?? I really hate when someone brings up race of a person - it's completely irrelevant in this discussion and suggests bigotry.

OP posts:
expatinscotland · 15/05/2017 13:16

'All the creditors were paid back in full. That was the main plank of her defence! '

AFTER she was caught out. The fact still remains that she sought to keep nearly a million dollars, so pled guilty to fraud in bankruptcy. That's not a 'victimless crime'. It's a crime. Abuse of the bankruptcy system fucks over everyone else and makes it harder for people who have to use it honestly.

And smuggling money in is a federal crime because, well, duh. People use that to launder money, to avoid taxes, again, none of that is 'victimless'. Her prosecution has zero to do with her race, gender or weight Hmm. Federal courts operate differently from state ones.

Absolutely ridiculous to suggest this has anything to do with weight, age or gender.

lottieandmia · 15/05/2017 17:40

Yep that too expat

I'm a US/UK national. I travel from the UK to the US every year. You're asked, 'Are you a US citizen?' on the plane, and given the appropriate form to fill in and sign. It's very clear, all of it, plants, goods, etc, that you have on your person or in your bags. You have to enter your US passport number and other information. And before you sign, a paragraph, that if you don't declare and you are found otherwise, that it is a federal crime and you are subject to federal prosecution, and then you sign it or don't.

As for the bankruptcy, that burns me up, too. We had to file for bankruptcy, after DD1 died. We had FA, that's why it's there. We felt like shit, it was personal and fell under the £15k limit for indigent people, but we had no other choice, as we were indigent. We didn't hide assets, we didn't have any. To do otherwise makes governments tighten laws for honest people who have no other choice, particularly in America, where one of the most common reasons for bankruptcy is medical debt due to their healthcare system. Hiding a load of money is theft, and I reckon a lot of those people she ran up debts on were small service providers of costumes and such goods, those people run on very narrow margins. But even if not, it's theft to hide money and then claim you have none to pay, and even if you pay it back, you wouldn't have if you weren't caught out.

As for black men in America, they're probably the most likely to be fucked over or even killed by the American justice system, there are many statistics that bear this out, so it's really rich to state this person was prosecuted for her race, gender and weight.
