Is anyone watching? It's very interesting.

i was but it got turned over. what do you think?

Gobbledigook · 08/03/2007 22:09

I think it's food for thought. I've always been a bit sceptical tbh so I find what they are saying quite logical and believable.

Last time I said I was sceptical on MN I got seriously flamed though! It seems I'm not exactly alone!

OP posts:
southeastastra · 08/03/2007 22:10

i'm sceptical too, hope they repeat it

CountTo10 · 08/03/2007 22:11

just put it on - what are they saying are alternative theories?

Gobbledigook · 08/03/2007 22:14

Well they've found a much closer correlation between activity of the sun and temperatures on earth. The correlation between CO2 and rise of temp is the opposite to that which the whole of the film 'An Inconvenient Truth' is based on. Rises in CO2 follow rises in temp so it doesn't seem to cause it.

Also, most of the rise in temp was pre-1940 and pre huge increase in output of CO2 from humans.

Apparently volcanoes emit way more CO2 than humans do, as do animals and bacteria.

I'm sure someone will come on here in a minute and tell me I'm talking crap - anyway, this is what the programme is showing and I'm finding it quite compelling.

am going to watch the end now

It is about time that somebody did a sensible television show on Global warming. I am also glad that they have used scientist that aren't in the pocket of oil companys. The minute I dare to suggest the Global Warming is a myth people start suggesting that the scientist that support this are being aided by oil companys.

hunkermunker · 08/03/2007 22:28

Fascinating, wasn't it?

I think it's very compelling.

melsy · 08/03/2007 22:28

Fascinating stuff, your explanation of the programme is spot on btw gobbledigook. It seems very reasoned and logical. Despite my closet tree hugging tendancies , Im not greatly enviromentaly friendly , as Ive always been sceptical of the C02 thing and it seems the two are not mututally inclusive in the current social climate!!! I cant be a truck driving, liptstick spiritual and love trees too !!

hunkermunker · 08/03/2007 22:29

GDG, have you read Michael Crichton's State Of Fear?

hunkermunker · 08/03/2007 22:31

IMO, "the environment" is a convenient way for the Government to get taxes out of us. Obviously massive oil spills are best avoided, but I think there's a large amount of hype about carbon footprints and zero emissions that's largely based on gravy-trainism.

CountTo10 · 08/03/2007 22:34

I have always wondered how there were massive global weather changes such as the ice age and global warming etc back in the early days of earth before the days of electricity etc. I'm not saying that we can't be more efficient in the way we use our energy resources, but I have never fully taken on board that we are the only factors causing temp changes and damage to the environment etc.

Thanks for the link sea

paulaplumpbottom · 08/03/2007 22:36

I don't think anybody will argue that conservation, making sure we have clean air or limiting waste is bad, even if there is no global warming.

Gobbledigook · 08/03/2007 22:42

I haven't Hunker - is it worth a read?

I agree with you paula - whether or not we are responsible for climate changes, it still makes sense to recycle, use energy only when we need to and to look into new ways of powering things (if that makes sense!). It's just logical not to be wasteful and to be as efficient as possible. I do though have serious doubts that we are actually impacting the climate - actually, not really serious doubts, I just don't believe it.

Blimey...GDG metamorphosing into a lentil weaver!
Well I never...

Gobbledigook · 08/03/2007 22:47

Not at all - I haven't changed my view at all - this has always been my stance.

grannycrackers · 08/03/2007 22:52

sorry haven't seen the programme but i have studied climate change as part of a degree. the level of co2 in the atmosphere is increasing and affecting the balance of gases which affects the retention and rebound of heat from the sun. the consequent rise in global temperature causes sea level rise, flooding in areas like bangladesh, damage to vulnerable habitats such as deserts and quite likely disruption to global wind patterns and climate bands which may cause more storms, etc.
of course there have always been storms but climate change is accelerated change with unknown, potentially catastrophic effects. for example, it is very difficult to predict the outcome on negative and positive feedback systems. sorry if i haven't explained this very well but i'm off to bed. i can give facts and figures tomorrow if anyone wants them

wotzsaname · 08/03/2007 22:52

Watched it..food for thought...and what ever, I will still reduce my energy consumptions and recycle.
Alot said was logical and some good points about media supplying what we want to read/believe, however in the same breath this in itself was TV media/editing at its best.

Glad it was on at a reasonable time and for longer than 30 minutes and was aimed at a reasonable level of intellect.

RubberDuck · 08/03/2007 22:52

It is very interesting. Didn't see the programme but I've been skeptical for a while - or at least skeptical on the media portrayal of global warming. Just about EVERYTHING is blamed on it, yet I distinctly remember as a child all the fear and hype about temperatures DROPPING and them being concerned about another ice age.

Climatology is a very new science and we're learning new stuff all the time. It also makes me raise an eyebrow when news reports start that "scientists agree" - yeah right... that'd be a first

hunkermunker · 08/03/2007 22:52

I think so, GDG - there's stuff in it that's challenged in various sites on the web, but it's the same principle.

I think it's fascinating there's a "don't let the developing countries develop" aspect to it all too.

wotzsaname · 08/03/2007 22:55

grannycrackers - are ou talking about Cosmic rays

Cosmic rays news item ref: Henrik Svensmark

paulaplumpbottom · 08/03/2007 22:57

I thought it was great that they had the Co-founder from Greenpeace on. I think people need to know that these people are extremist. Even their co-founder thinks they've gone off the deep end. I think the aspect of "peaceniks" needing a cause after the Cold War was interesting to.

paulaplumpbottom · 08/03/2007 22:59

Actually the Solar weather is interesting to. What they didn't mention is that we are on the brink of some major solar weather for the next 11 years or so. (Solar weather goes in cycles of about 11 years) So the temperatures will probably get hotter.

RubberDuck · 09/03/2007 06:35

Anyone know if it's due to be shown again?
