Written by the creators of Breaking Bad (!) so bound to be on the dark and gritty side. Coming to Netflix in May.

I think Megan Follows will always be 'my' Anne but I'll certainly give this a watch. There was a recent film version of AoGG on TV and it was really terrible, a stage school Anne-brat with false freckles. I wanted to slap her Grin

I just don't think I can...
Megan, Colleen, Jonathan, Richard, in fact ALL of the actors in the original series were it for me. I don't want anything to spoil that perfection.

waitinforsuperman · 08/04/2017 21:51

The third installment sounds dreadful! I've always meant to watch it, glad i haven't.

There's a new Degrassi high series on Netflix. I tried it but i am far too old.

I agree the casting in the original AoGG series was perfect. I was so sad when Jonathan Crombie died.

Bue · 08/04/2017 22:15

lizzieoak but everything on the Knowledge Network is British!

Trumps I agree the opening credits are super cool. Kind of bittersweet because it's the Tragically Hip though.

How can you hate the Beachcombers? Shock I have such memories of that show from when I was little. Especially Relic. Street Legal was also an excellent show. Degrassi (the original) and Dear Aunt Agnes were truly wonderful shows for younger teens too. I think Canadian TV was much better in the 80s actually. There were so many terrific children's programs.

It's all gone downhill. Don't get me started on the quality of CBC. Workin' Moms. Murdoch Mysteries. Awful. I agree Schitts Creek is quite good and it's got a great cast. But that new Bellevue program which was heavily touted because it stars Anna Paquin is just awful.

lizzieoak · 08/04/2017 22:35

Bue, I've kind of liked the documentary about Vancouver General, and they've just done a series on BC labour history which was a bit too short but serviceable.

I remember loathing Beachcombers when I was a kid. Everyone on that show was so freaking tense all the time! And there always seemed to be massive drama about logs. I would just sit there thinking "what is this shit?" (Well, 9 year old version of that) and be desperate for it to be over so I could watch Rhoda.

lizzieoak · 08/04/2017 22:38

And Workin Mums!!! What a bloody awful program. All these upper middle class mums who either hate their jobs, spouses, or kids. The redhead who hates her kid particularly annoys me (have gotten ennui and semi-watched it twice). All in their power suits and their brand new cars. How about working mums from a variety of socio-economic backgrounds who are full of spite/depression?

RhubarbRocks · 08/04/2017 22:42

No no no!! Just watched the trailer - then are trying to hard to match the original, which was already perfect!!! It's too close but not quite there. Sorry, am far too in love with the Jonathan Crombie Gilbert Blythe to ever want to see another version. And I loved the music from the original almost as much as Gil.

lizzieoak · 08/04/2017 23:03

I was never a fan of the books (dodging rocks) but the CBC series is so beautifully filmed I may give it a go. The other series ... I watched the trailer and Martin Sheen's accent is very wrong for PEI (or anywhere in Canada).

Petrichord · 08/04/2017 23:08

I've had to name change for this as I'm outing myself. First confession - I didn't like the Megan Follows version of Gilbert - sorry everyone Smile

Second confession - I prefer Emily to Anne - I think the books are more interesting. Dean is well dodgy as PP has said.

All of which is a terrible betrayal because my real-life name is actually the same as Anne's. I have a different surname but my first name is Anne and my middle name is Shirley. When I first read AOGG and got to the part where she tells Marilla her name, I dropped the book and ran downstairs to tell my mum - and was slightly reconciled to my middle name which I hated Smile

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 08/04/2017 23:33

Petrichord your family name isn't Cuthbert is it? Grin

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 08/04/2017 23:33

But what a name to have! Were your parents AOGG fans or was it a total coincidence?

QueenoftheAndals · 09/04/2017 00:34

The one I'd really love them to film is Rilla of Ingleside, the book about the Blythes during WWI, seen through the eyes of Anne's youngest daughter. And WALTER, my heart be still!!

Petrichord · 09/04/2017 09:03

Ha! No, my surname isn't Cutbbert (or Blythe!).

It's pure coincidence. My middle name comes from a friend of my DM who died before I was born. DM may have read AOGG but she wasn't a particular fan of it.

ISaySteadyOn · 09/04/2017 09:12

Oh yes to that, Queen. Poor Una.

QueenoftheAndals · 09/04/2017 12:55

Petrichord I'd have made it my mission in life to find a Mr Blythe for my DH! Unfortunately it isn't as common as Smith or Jones...

Freyathecatt · 09/04/2017 13:18

Love this thread and finding kindred spirits! May watch the new one, but I'm making re-watching all of the Megan Follows ones again a priority.

DameDeDoubtance · 09/04/2017 14:37

I love Anne, nooks, series, the lot, huge Megan Follows fan, she nailed it. Apart from the third film, I try not to think about that.

I will definitely watch the new one but is there anywhere you can watch the old ones?

DameDeDoubtance · 09/04/2017 14:37

books, not nooks!

Andylion · 09/04/2017 15:18

I watched the first episode and enjoyed it very much. I have always liked RH Thomson. This version is much darker than the Megan version.

Someone asked if there has been an Emily series. There was, from 1998-2000, I believe. I was disappointed in it as I thought the lead was completely miscast; she was too moppet-like. They seemed to have missed the whole tone of the Emily books.

Canadian TV? Someone if it is good. Schitt's Creek is very funny. (I used to have a huge crush on Eugene Levy, back in his Second City/SCTV days, Blush.)

I also enjoyed X Company, Cardinal, (based on the books by Giles Blunt), and Orphan Black. Orphan Black is Canadian, but it would not have got off the ground were it not for funding by BBCAmerica. It's a joint production, BBCAm-Temple St production.

Also good, from my youth, Street Legal, Seeing Things, and more recently, Made in Canada, Twitch City and Being Erica. I think these worked because they were unashamedly Canadian (specifically, Torontonian). (I had heard that there was to be a Scottish version of Being Erica, but I've not seen any info recently.)

There was an earlier adaption of he Murdoch Mysteries which were very good as they were dark as the novels were. I recommend the novels, by the way, author, Maureen Jennings.

Republic of Doyle, with the very handsome Allan Hawco, was a very funny cop show set in St. John's Newfoundland. Oh look, here he is.

If you're an Anne of Green Gables fan have you heard about the new series?

Andylion · 09/04/2017 15:19

Someone if it = some of it.

Sorry if this is this is a threadnap.

ISaySteadyOn · 09/04/2017 15:26

AndyLion, I loved Being Erica.

Andylion · 09/04/2017 15:35

Apologies for my crappy typing.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 09/04/2017 15:37

Interesting trailer!
I'm old, so my Anne is Kim Braden from the 1972 tv series. She's even on the back of my Anne of Green Gables book Grin
I liked Megan Follows but she had brown eyes ffs - one of the MAJOR features of Anne Shirley was the grey starry eyes, how could I cope with her having brown ones?!

Will definitely have a look at the Netflix show though.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 09/04/2017 15:38

Oh, forgot to add this - Kim Braden, for anyone who doesn't know about her.

If you're an Anne of Green Gables fan have you heard about the new series?
squoosh · 09/04/2017 15:39

I've never seem the Kim Braden version. I'm sure I read that the BBC had deleted their file copy.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 09/04/2017 15:43

Probably :(
It would almost certainly not be as good as I remember it, though, just like the 1980 version of Pride and Prejudice, which a friend's parents lent to me a few years ago - I was quite shocked at how slow-paced and wooden it seemed!
