Yes think Miriam and Sharon Osbourne share a surgeon...
I love Sheila, she made my first birth a blissful experience, I'm so glad I read her book first

Wished Pen Leach had been able to appear, she has had some superb quotes on the debate.
She doesn;t mince her words or opinions

Team penny here!

Sophable, she was there via the power of literature!

Seriously, I just read her books, but they really made me DARE to have a homebirth with dd, and honestly, I was counting down the days to being in labour, because I WANTED that experience. And, yes it was painful, but FANTASTIC at the same time, and I do put it down to her book - she's not one of these 'imagine a flower opening up, and embrace the contractions' types, but really positive. Ds2's birth was harder, but again, things she'd written came flooding into my mind.

Breastfeeding too, I found a book she'd written, when I was having problems with ds1, and opened the book on a page which described him exactly - explained a lot to me, why, when everyone was telling me that a baby that sleeps contentedly is getting enough milk, my baby who hardly woke up was losing weight by the pound.

Sheila, if you read MN, thank you so much!

I think she talks a lot of sense - a wise old dame

Marina · 05/03/2007 22:42

I love Sheila Kitzinger even more now than I did at 8.59pm tonight .
Even if she did seem to have had the contents of one of hunker's wnaky baskets tipped into her hair - but those are inspiring posts torty and mummypossum
Am also a big fan of P Leach and was sorry not to see her there too.

ruty · 06/03/2007 09:38

liked SK a lot. Bit scared by Miriam Stoppard's surgery thought. Thank god her brain is still intact.

sunnywong · 06/03/2007 09:41

Miriam has to keep up with Felicity though
even though it's over between her and Tom, she has to keep reminding him to take a look at what he could have won.

ruty · 06/03/2007 09:44

oh yes, they are both morphing into the same woman a bit.

ruty · 06/03/2007 09:44

[love you really Miriam]

sfxmum · 06/03/2007 10:01

love Miriam and Sheila missed Penelope my great supporters and providers of inspiration and confidence

mum2sons · 06/03/2007 11:05

I liked SK and what OJ was saying, also liked the midwife.
Wish it could be discussed properly!

KathyMCMLXXII · 06/03/2007 11:11

I can't normally bear Miriam but I thought she was extremely good on this. I liked her line about the implication that crying is somehow optional.

Wasn't SK gorgeously earthmothery? And hell, why shouldn't she wear ethnic jewellery??

Blandmum · 06/03/2007 11:20

Was this the TV programme that covered all aspects of 'guru=dome'?

So glad that SK came over so well. Nice when that happens isn't it?

Blandmum · 06/03/2007 11:22

Isn't it lovely to discuss how positive a woman she is? A scholar and a mother, such a strong, positive combination and a real role model for us all.

Missed the prog. was it good?

HaHaBizarre · 06/03/2007 11:41

Sheila Kitzinger lives in the same village as my inlaws. I've walked past her lovely house often but never seen her.

Marina · 06/03/2007 11:45

The programme was excellent MB. Sheila Kitzinger, Oliver James, Miriam Stoppard, all talking very wisely on various issues.
Other experts were there to provide balance although the main protagonist didn't appear. Parents, both celeb and ordinary, who had used various parenting books gave their views too. And a fab "ordinary couple" with a cute newborn gave the method a try and found it did not work for them.
Justine was interviewed to great constructive effect IMO.

OrmIrian · 06/03/2007 11:50

SK single-handedly changed me from a reluctantly pregnant mum who was not at all sure about this motherhood thing, to someone looking forward to it with an open mind at least and who was almost convinced that babys were cute . I took it from there. Only baby/pregnancy book I kept from first time round. Other one was Birth Reborn by Michael Odent.

largeginandtonic · 06/03/2007 12:12

I had a congratulations on the birth of your twins card from her > My exp is a midwife and knows her well. She is lovely and wrote such lovely words in the card. Wish id kept it

chopchopbusybusy · 06/03/2007 12:18

I read SKs breastfeeding book in preparation for the birth of DD1. I had taken it into hospital and when the midwife saw it she was extremely scathing about it. But then that would be the same midwife who stuffed a dummy in DDs mouth because she was feeding too much . She also suggested that as soon as I got DD home I should give her a bottle of formula and add some baby rice to it because she was too big to breastfeed successfully!! Thank god I ignored it and returned to Sheila's advice and breastfed successfully.

Enid · 06/03/2007 12:22

I love her books (SK)

occasionally I worry that she is a bit lentil weavery but I love her idea that in fact, there is something inside of you, as a woman, that CAN do this birth/feeding/parenting lark

3andnomore · 06/03/2007 14:55

I assume you are all talking about the programme last night on Five life
Thought it was an excellent programme...!
As for Eamon wots his face...well...him and his wifey looked just like the right clientel of a certain person.
I had never heard of that Oliver James...btu that book that was mentioned sounds rather interesting...like the title...haha....
Funny enough sk was just as I expected...lol!
She is my hero Her and Penelope Leach
