Benefit programmes

Anyone else find these a good watch? I cringe like mad and find myself shouting quite horrible things at them, but still can't help but sit and laugh half of the time. It makes people on benefits like myself look like lazy lay about twats.

Just in case anyone has an opinion I am only on benefits because I am my DD carer, if I wasn't her carer I would definitely be out working!!! In fact I can't wait till she's 5 and will be in full time education so I can try and find a job!!

Tonight's is about a 30 stone fat person Hmm should be interesting..

I think there's one or two episodes left, on a Monday, but the rest should still be on iPlayer.

You're not a gullible idiot; they're cleverly made and compelling programmes that hit all the right feel-good buttons in a viewer's mind. And there's next to no counter-narrative out there.

Have you seen the new Ken Loach film about benefits claimants? It's fiction, but when I came out of the cinema I felt it was incredibly accurate. The cinema audience was the quietest I've ever been in and someone was nearly in tears at the end. As we came out, a couple of us had conversations about how well it reflected our experiences of the system.

legotits · 03/11/2016 20:59

These guys make a lot of money.

They pay the best people to make sure the format appeals.

It's how Jeremy Kyle gets away with it. Grin

IcedVanillaLatte · 03/11/2016 21:02

Sorry for my hostility earlier.

DigestiveMuncher · 03/11/2016 21:04

I'll check it out!

Legotits I didn't even realise that about Jeremy Kyle until I had seen something about a woman who sat in the audience on one of the episodes and said that half of what went on, on stage wasn't shown on the telly and that Jeremy portrayed most of them as being horrible people when really they weren't!!

Icedvanilla no I haven't seen it, seems like it could be an interesting thing to actually watch, least I won't be drawn in by a load of crap!!

DigestiveMuncher · 03/11/2016 21:07

Icedvanilla seriously there is no need to apologise at all!!
It was a wake up call and I can only thank you otherwise I would of carried on with the same views I had of the people on the show as when I started the thread.

IcedVanillaLatte · 03/11/2016 21:08

Ken Loach does have a definite angle - he's been making films like that for decades (Cathy Come Home probably the most famous one) so you're not getting a totally impartial look at the system, but I promise you that lots of these people I know who've been through the system are very touched by it.

expatinscotland · 03/11/2016 21:10

No, this type of programming is sick and takes advantage of vulnerable people. Utter rot. Will never watch these shows.

DigestiveMuncher · 03/11/2016 21:14

I'm gonna have to watch it! It's good that their is someone out there willing to make a film about the "truth" behind benefits rather then the crap they obviously fill people's heads with on the benefit programmes. Might be able to educate myself a bit better 🙈Blush I've embarrassed myself with this post, I really have!

LastGirlOnTheLeft · 03/11/2016 21:44

No you haven't, Digestive! These programmes are designed to manipulate people. Don't feel bad....you have been educated now and so it is a good thing you started this thread.

I work with vulnerable, disadvantaged people...they live hard lives, poor and often out of options! THAT is the killer for them! They have no choices, no say in what happens to them, they suffer with health issues, are bored through lack of activity, and are very often helpless. It SUCKS!

What is even worse though, are the sick people making money off the poorest and most in need in our society...rich, entitled men! Ironically, the most useless people on earth!

DigestiveMuncher · 03/11/2016 22:12

I have been one of the people you work with LGOTL that's why I am so embarrassed about the whole post. If I had known that it was all made for show i would of never of started it in the first place. I just presumed that it was all real and nothing would be cut out on a programme like that, I was clearly wrong.

I agree that it is just rich people making a mockery of the ones that don't have what they have. It's sad and shouldn't be allowed to happen!

Whilst I've not claimed ESA I've claimed PIP and the whole ATOS process and DWP attitudes were scarily accurate in I, Daniel Blake.

DigestiveMuncher · 03/11/2016 22:53

I haven't seen that film so haven't a clue what is said in it or what it is about tbh.
I don't really understand the whole PIP thing either I claim DLA for my DD I'm not sure I understand what the difference is really Confused

I think you just aren't yourself some kind of reasonable poster of the year award there digestive 🙂

I second latte's recommendation of 'Victorian Slum' BTW

Manumission · 03/11/2016 23:02

^earnt yourself

DigestiveMuncher · 03/11/2016 23:06

I'm a reasonable person, if I have wrote something incorrect and I read and realise that what I have said is completely stupid, then I'm not going to carry on with what I first started. I will hold my hands up and admit that I was ignorant. Which I have done!!

I'm just going on to BBC Iplayer now to see if I can find it haha

OP posts:
IcedVanillaLatte · 03/11/2016 23:07

PIP is the replacement benefit for DLA, for adults. The way it is assessed is different, the criteria are different, and the lower payment rate in one of the two categories has been eliminated (so if you only qualified for lower rate DLA in that category, you probably won't qualify for PIP in that category).

Manumission · 03/11/2016 23:09

Yeah we need more reasonable people like that around here. I wonder if we could clone you? Smile

DigestiveMuncher · 03/11/2016 23:20

Aha right I see what you mean!
My DD is only 2 and is on highest rate for DLA so I take it this pip wont effect anything for her ATM

OP posts:
DigestiveMuncher · 03/11/2016 23:21

Manumission I could be cloned but I still don't think it would help anything around here lol Grin

BishopBrennansArse · 03/11/2016 23:34

No PIP won't kick in til 16.
My ATOS face to face was so humiliating.

IcedVanillaLatte · 03/11/2016 23:36

Yes, for children it's still DLA.

Would like to see what MrTumble has to say about your DD being on high rate DLA… cause that's so easy to get if you're just blagging it to sit on your arse for five years… Hmm

ATOS? Sorry I don't know any of these abbreviations at all lol HmmGrin

And exactly I see she has kept quite since making the comment. And I love it even more that even though it's been reported it hasn't been taken down Angry
She would probably say I'm still lying about it idiot
I wish my DD didn't need to be on high rate DLA or need me to be sat at home 24/7 it's a boring life. There isn't many activities that me and DD can do together due to her disability so life really isn't a walk in the park like she's made out it to be.
