The actors who play Ian and Jane are both 47, so not that much older than Gillian Taylforth. They also tend to dress them both rather frumpily, so the age gap looks smaller. I guess when they hired teenage Ian he looked younger than his years. They probably didn't realise he'd be on the show for decades.

Adam was cast as Ian if I'm correct before Gillian as Kathy. When Gillian came up it was noticed that there was a small age gap.

The casting loved Gillian so had to say Kathy had Ian young to try mitigate the gap
