Murdered By My Father (BBC3 and soon to be on BBC1)

I watched this last night on iPlayer (it's to be aired on BBC1 on Tuesday).

In the same vein of Murdered by my Boyfriend. Girl of 16/17 promised to the son of a business associate of her widowed father's in an arranged marriage, but in love with another.

The most harrowing thing I have seen in a very long time. I was speechless when the credits started rolling (literally, mouth open but couldn't get anything out). The storyline, I feel, was incredibly well written (the character of the father was especially good) and acting was bloody amazing.

I found it harder to watch than Murdered by my Boyfriend - maybe because it involves a parent and their child. Utterly utterly heartbreaking.

The most bizarre thing is that they do something so utterly heinous out of 'love'. Just crazy.

I watched this before, it was utterly harrowing. As with MBMB, this will stay with me a long time. He was trying to give her a way out, telling her to go before anything happened, but she stayed to try and reason with him Sad

I watched a programme about how the men cut their own women's throats at partition in India to avoid them being raped and to, in part, keep honour. Dreadful.

I watched this last night when disabled DS thought 2am was morning!

I thought it was fantastic but horrifying and was enthralled throughout.... Gotta love the BBC

That is why it was so good

He did absolutely love his daughter but the importance of honour is so entrenched in his life was so heavy and held so much meaning to his being it ended with the most tragic consequences how could he have made such a choice

I am sure many stories are similar Sad

I watched it last night. It was really harrowing. I think at the end the credits said there have been 60 such murders since 2010. Wtf??
One thing I liked is that it showed the pressure on the father. I think life in these communities is very complex because everyone's lives are intertwined. There is no real free choice. The dad's meagre livelihood was dependent on the fact his daughter was promised to that Haroon guy. I imagine that is not unusual. He couldn't have agreed to her breaking the engagement. His own life was over as a result. So sad.

In response to someone who asked what the people around would have felt (ie Haroon's family). Sadly they would have thought the murder was justified as Salma had dishonoured her family and them. Honour is such a BIG thing in many cultures and seems to over-ride all emotional ties and bonds with their offspring - daughters in most cases. I'm from such a community and still find it shocking. Watch Mustang which is out now on DVD. It's Turkish and the way they treat the girls is also horrific. I was lucky I escaped by going to Uni then I married an Englishman but I did have to endure emotional blackmail when I told them. Thankfully they came around to the idea but many people in the Community judged them for it.
