Did anone watch this last night? I was sort of enjoying it,thought the sets etc were great and I like Victoria Wood in most things. Was worried it was going to have a bit of a predictable ending but....fell asleep and missed the last hslf hour! How did it end? Did her son get killed? (my prediction to dh!)

oh i liked it- i think she is good at serious. well the son( may or may not have been gay) went to art college and became asculptor and went to live in Oz

she stayed with her husband and died in 1968 i think

JARMgotstuckupthechimney · 11/12/2006 09:35

It was bloody brilliant! Was hooked.

Her son came home and they made up. The shop closed. War was over.

She stayed with her husband, continued sending her diaries until shortly before she died.

Her soon emigrated to Australia where he became a scupture artist.

The other son married the irish girl.

The stroppy woman from the WVS whose grandson was in hospital came back to thank Mrs Last for sending the parcels out because it reminded him that he wasnt forgotten.

Was a really good piece of TV me thinks, thoroughly enjoyed it.

i liked the people in the Mass observation unit- i was wondering if such a thing still exists or was it the early beginnings of a Mori pole or something?

purplemonkeydasheranddancer · 11/12/2006 09:40

I've got it taped. Very looking forward to watching it!

happystory · 11/12/2006 09:40

Thanks all! They did a mass diary didn't they recently, chose an ordinary day and asked people to record what they'd done that day, but don't know if they do it on a regular basis...would be fun!

wonder if they did a book of some of the diaries- would make a great present.

happystory · 11/12/2006 09:49

thanks happystory will check it out. just spoke to my mum and know she would like it( would have been the same age as the Evelyn character)

MariNativityPlay · 11/12/2006 10:08

Hidden Lives, by Simon Garfield. Fascinating reading. They mischievously referred to one of the lives in that book on the telly last night, I think - something about a whingey Aberdonian queen.
The MO Unit and Archive are still going strong at the University of Sussex.
Thought the drama was very good. I usually find Victoria Wood as actress a bit too much, but she was really touching in this.
And yet again David Threlfall shows how he can just become a different character. Same guy as the ridiculous dad in Shameless!

FLAMEinEckItsYuleAgain · 11/12/2006 10:14

Oh bum - i forgot about it!

Bugsy2 · 11/12/2006 10:14

I really enjoyed this production. I thought it was so well done. The characters were all so plausible. I think I may have to find "Hidden Lives" - sounds like a good read.

MariNativityPlay · 11/12/2006 10:15

They are bound to repeat it flame, it was well-reviewed and very popular.

purplemonkeydasheranddancer · 11/12/2006 14:12

Flame - do you want me to send you a copy?

FLAMEinEckItsYuleAgain · 11/12/2006 14:46

Aww that would be nice pmdw

MissMistletoe · 11/12/2006 17:04

I was really looking forward to this, as the 'trailers' looked good. Have to say though, I was a bit disappointed with it, I found it quite slow. It was, I suppose, easy watching for a Sunday night. It was interesting, to see what things were like in Wartime Britain. Some touching bits, like where her son draws a heart in the sand with a woman inside and says "that's you Mum, you're in my heart." Also where she commented that her 'days as a Mother were over' got me thinking. Do you think we'll all feel like that one day? That's .

MissMistletoe · 11/12/2006 17:05

Oh, I liked Mrs Waite, the WVS head honcho. Reminded me of Hycianth Bouquet.

Mercy · 11/12/2006 17:14

I missed the first hour of this so didn't really get into it tbh.

What I love about these period dramas is the clothes, hairstyles, decor etc (can't remember what the correct term for all these) Fascinating.

purplemonkeydasheranddancer · 11/12/2006 17:16

Flame - my email is purplemonkey22 at hotmail.co.uk
I'm not sure when i'll have time to watch/record it but it'll come eventually!

JollyOldSaintNikkielas · 11/12/2006 19:56

I only watched the 1st hour (then switched over for Torchwood ) but have tped the rest to watch later.
I was really enjoying it, and also because I live in Barrow it was great to see local places, though they said the beach was Walney and it wasn't

FairytaleOfNewNORKSBRIDE · 11/12/2006 20:32

I really enjoyed it. First thing I've watched for weeks so extremely pleased! Victoria Wood is brilliant.

Have to say, it was nice to see VW in something without Julie Walters spoiling it! She gets next Sundays gig with Ron Weasley.

Katherine · 12/12/2006 12:21

Drat I missed it. I grew up in Barrow. Hope it will be repeated or do you think I can get it via amazon?
