What programmes do you watch as a family?

I don't get to watch much TV but there is the odd hour in the day where I think it would be nice to watch something with my kids that we could all enjoy together (DD is 9 and DS is 6)

The things we've found so far that we all like are:

  • Great British Bake Off (not on atm)
  • Would I Lie to You? (I think we've watched all the episodes ever made)
  • Outnumbered (seen 'em all)

As none of these are on at the moment we are currently restricted to episodes of the new Danger Mouse which, while good, is not my ideal evening entertainment Grin

We don't have Sky or anything like that so we are restricted to what's on Freeview and catchup TV. I'm thinking of getting a streaming service (Amazon Prime? Netflix?) but I don't know which. As a starting point it would be nice to know what you like to watch together and then I can find out where it's available.

DCs are 8,5&2. We only have freeview too (though can record).Things we watch together:

BBC natural history programs - things like the blue ocean live that was on, those series narrated by David Attenborough
Strictly
Anything dinosaur / fossil related
Anything with prof Brian Cox
Horrible histories
Bake off (though now finished)
Cbeebies - girls are still heavily into this.
DS (8) loves anything factual and so bbc4 tends to be his channel of choice

There's not that much 'family viewing' when you think about it..

Mine are 9 and 11 and we've enjoyed the following together:

Gbbo
Miranda
Ed Stafford documentaries (sky but on now tv subscription)
Strictly
Some of unreported world - depending on subject matter.
Dd loves don't tell the bride
Fawlty towers

Thanks for sharing. Yes mine still watch CBEebies though I draw the line at watching Me Too with them.

Miranda is a good call. I wonder if they'd like Strictly. Will try them out on some of those. DD quite likes a random documentary but DS doesn't have the concentration for that. He might manage a David Attenborough though.

Also enjoying the latest Gareth Malone singing comp.

-Bear Grylls born survivor on Quest,
-Older Matt Smith Doctor Who (avoiding weeping angels or anything else that looks too scary though)
-Merlin on Netflix
-Scrapheap Challenge (although that's more with their dad. I'm not keen)
In case you haven't guessed, 2 boys! Ds1 and I did like GBBO too; he's a bit of a foodie so will happily watch any cookery programmes.

I may watch Dr Who with DC (age 7-15), and DH watches The Simpsons with DC (blech I loathe TS).

We all sat & watched Avatar recently, that was unusual.

shartsi · 30/10/2015 18:32

Say yes to the dress on TLC

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 30/10/2015 21:11

Big Bang Theory (all of us)

DS and DH watch The Walking Dead

DS doesn't like the new Dr Who, so DH watches it alone, but we all watch the old ones

LlamaLover · 31/10/2015 11:22

How about quizzes? Usually on 4-5pm ish. Pointless and The Chase enjoyed by all here.

Ferguson · 02/11/2015 19:34

And once a month try "The Sky at Night", usually on BBC 4, but you may also find it elsewhere.

At weekends, on BBC News Channel (Freeview 160) "Click", all about the latest 'tech', and developments in the digital world.

"Horizon" can often be interesting (though complicated) and older editions can be found on several channels.

So hard to find something we all enjoy - DS is a teenager - we all like Lewis/Endeavour that sort of detective programme. Currently all watching the Americans together ............. can't bear Dr Who or reality type stuff.

DH & DS watch a lot of sport together.

Nothing else really.

Hi, I am looking for some programmes to watch with my 9 year old and 6 year old, other than Hetty Feather and Operation Ouch!

They both love 'Horrible Histories'. I am looking for some drama entertainment which is non animation and we can all have fun watching.

We are entering the zone where they are both keen on American style movies such as 'Home Alone' and have a great sense of fun. I am really disappointed that there is so little which is suitable for all the family to watch. I am sorry to say I am bored of 'Strictly', X factor style stuff, and game shows. I am about to complain heavily to bbc about how little there is for suitable family viewing out there.
