Has anyone else seen this film? I saw it today and thought it was fantastic (if a bit strange!) The 'judgy' mums at the birthday party were absolutely spot on.

Yes! I loved it. The two leads were brilliant. A great take on how to deal with being a lone, scared, grieving parent (her) and being the 'weird one' at school (him).

BreeVDKamp · 23/09/2015 15:48

Yes!! Saw it a while ago but remember thinking it was good! And I liked the elderly neighbour. Super scary mother character.

jubblie · 23/09/2015 16:24

It's brilliant isn't it?!
The mother was amazing - she went from lovely (but sad) Mum to terrifying Mum. I looked on wiki (as I didn't really understand the ending) and it explained that the babadook was a metaphor for her grief. I couldn't stop thinking about it - it's so well acted.

A metaphor for her grief AND her son's grief, fear and confusion, I think. I loved how they were able to sit in the sun in the garden at the end, after all that time in the grey, dark, shadowy house, and both still be a bit weird and carrying grief and sadness, but able to laugh and talk about it.

Fugghetaboutit · 23/09/2015 16:42

Yes I've seen it. Thought it was good. Loved the eery house and mother. The little boy was a great actor too

OnlyLovers · 23/09/2015 17:05

Wasn't he just? Astonishing. One to watch for the future. She was awesome too.

jubblie · 23/09/2015 17:06

Yes he was amazing.

Ba-ba-ba-dook dook DOOK

If you want to see Essie Davis (the mother) looking COMPLETELY different, Miss Fisher Investigates is on Netflix - if you like Agatha Christie you'll like this!

PalcumTowder · 24/09/2015 22:00

I just watched this recently, I thought it was a great metaphor for her depression/anxiety about being a lone parent and the overwhelming-ness of it all.

I just loved the boy too, I wanted to scoop him up and take care of him!

SmellsLikeMiddleAgeSpirit · 25/09/2015 17:17

I'm actually planning on watching it tonight! Glad to see it's so well regarded. May report back with my findings!

NotTodaySatan · 25/09/2015 17:20

It was great as a psychological thriller.

Great acting by both leads.

Annoying that it was marketed as a horror though as it wasn't remotely scary.

Fugghetaboutit · 25/09/2015 18:54

I found it a bit scary Blush

jubblie · 25/09/2015 19:39

It is a bit scary but not in a Blair Witch way!

I watched it a few weeks ago. I love horror and I found it pretty scary. I find anything to do with kids pretty horrible these days now though. The house was awful, why was it all painted in different shades of grey?

jubblie · 25/09/2015 20:43

I think the house was grey because it was so full of sadness. As onlylovers pointed out above, that changed at the end of the film.

OnlyLovers · 28/09/2015 10:25

I thought it was REALLY scary! Not in a cheap make-you-jump way, but genuinely unsettling and, like all good horrors, about real feelings like sadness, regret, grief, confusion and loneliness.

I quite liked the grey house. Blush

WickedGirl · 30/09/2015 21:26

My dh and I watched this last night.......we both thought it was horrible. I don't like anything with young children being scared
