Anyone watching how to get a council house on channel 4?

Is this a repeat or another new series ? I remember this sort of programme being on before.

Can't believe Emma. How entitled is she? People are on the streets and she's refusing a flat because it's too high up and not a great place to live. Surely with four kids anything is better than the streets!

She says she wants to get what she deserves. But it's not explained why she's unemployed. Surely you wouldn't risk yourself and four kids on the streets for a dog either.

And they live like that do they?

Methe · 20/07/2015 21:48

You can understand why half the world wants to live here, can't you?

This is the first one of these programs I've watched. I work in social housing so I decided against it up to now.

I feel terribly for all the people on tonight's show. Imagine living the guys from Romania?

mollyonthemove · 20/07/2015 21:49

I don't understand why landlords like that don't just get sorted out! arse.

ribbitTheFrog · 20/07/2015 21:49

I think it's wrong that the Romanians can claim benefits, no disrespect to that particular family but there are already too many people on the list for council houses, it's not feasible to house even more from around Europe...

Icantbelieveitsnotbutter · 20/07/2015 21:53

Why isn't the Romanians landlord arrested?? What an absolute cowboy!

woodhill · 20/07/2015 21:56

so do I Ribbit, I think people who are UK residents already should have priority. 3 months is nothing.

SurlyCue · 20/07/2015 22:26

I am watching on catch up. The man who refuses to apply for jobseekers is irritating me. Why wont he? Confused surely he has a responsibility to contribute towards his own living and housing costs? If he cant get work then he should claim jobseekers! Also that comment he made about it being good for his partner to "give" Hmm i know what he'd be called on MN.

RedHelenB · 21/07/2015 05:44

they had split up by the end - hopefully she'd realised he was using her! Funny how he then managed to get a job!

ilovechristmas1 · 21/07/2015 09:56

the man was an utter bum,his GF now ex was in tears stressed to the eyeballs and he still wouldnt do anything to help their situation

she is well rid

agree with the 3 months it is way way to low, with his work £250 and benefit of £290 their doing very well, though they did seem a very genuine couple, they were stunned when the man said how much TC etc they would get

SurlyCue · 21/07/2015 10:13

Yes why did he keep saying "if my finances change, either through work or benefits"? Hmm how did you picture that happening mate? Do you think jobs or benefits just fall out of the sky onto your lap? And as for "i work to live, not live to work" you dont do either! I wonder if she lost her job before they split or after.

Scoobydoo8 · 21/07/2015 10:17

The nasty tories get the blame for right to buy but jeessh how many years of labour gov did we have and they did nothing whatsoever about it.

We've just had a coalition and nothing was done. Personally I don't understand it but maybe there ARE actually still a lot of council tenants whose vote gov depends on.

But also that is not the full reason for a housing shortage - there are so many single adult households, plus everyone living longer. Means many more homes are needed.

In this area - as tenants become infirm a family member moves in to help. They then inherit the tenancy (or used to) when the original owner passes away, hopefully this has changed now but I doubt it.

gamerchick · 21/07/2015 11:12

Doesn't labour suspend the right to buy as soon as they get in power? I'm sure I remember it being brought back in with the coalition.

Ilovecrapcrafts · 21/07/2015 11:39

No RTB has always been available

mollyonthemove · 21/07/2015 17:19

We bought ours under Labour.

Blondeshavemorefun · 21/07/2015 17:48

ahhhhhhhhhhh end didnt record

got to the part where house where romanians lived in one room, and said LL wouldn t get the rent the council would

what else happened

23yr girl and fiancee, i believe the term is cocklodger curlysue Grin i cant beleive he didnt have a job for a year but also didnt sign on, and poor girl paid every thing from a 0 contract job

which brings to why do people accept 0 hrs

but from replies their relationship ended

tho why didnt they have their lodger pay a deposit to them, rather then just leaving, if had a months deposit then would have been ok

also why did they rent a 3 bed house when just the 2 of them, hence needing a lodger

romanian family would have got just under £300per week in benefits Shock tho obv shouldnt be living in such a small room

hope LL was fined

man who left his family home shouldnt sign his home over so he gets property, that seems playing ther system to me

lady who lived in 3 bed flat, who didnt want to move, but did to the 2 bed piss smelling flat :( was complaining about leaving her friends and family ................

then pay your rent for the last 5mths, if a £2K rent arrears, why do the council allow it to run so long, a month or so and booth them out - or is that too harsh? Wink

didnt know council did loans for deposit, this is a good idea as glad the 23yr didnt get a high interest loan a that would make things hard for her financially, but why not ay to them what depoit they will lend

and again didnt they get a deposit back from the 3bed they rented?

ilovechristmas1 · 21/07/2015 18:06

i think the lady with the grown up kids said she worked to jobs and earnt £120 a week

she did mention working at Portsmouth FC,maybe just a match day job

something not right there, also she surely got HB towards her rent if her wage was so low,i really dont see how she can amass £2k arrears

gamerchick · 21/07/2015 20:15

The council took the building off the dodgy landlord where the Romanian couple lived.

I noticed there is another Council house program started in the mornings about subletting. Really going hell for leather with this one.. It's like benefit Britain all over again.

Geoff0409 · 22/07/2015 10:59

I thought the Romanian family were very nice. There "room" was absolutely disgusting, disgraceful to be left like that, and the Landlord should be arrested. However I don't think they should get that volume of tax credits when only being in the UK for 2 years. The guy who had given the house to his wife and kids and had the alcohol problem needs very serious help. I felt really bad for him. The Lady that had arrears and was being forced to move - that situation really annoyed me - I got the impression that the council were basically bullying her into moving because she was an easy target. And as for the couple - I understand that there may be a "stigma" people perhaps attach to claiming JSA but for goodness sake it might pay a bill or for your food shopping and you are entitled to it. When said "there are retails jobs but I want to do Security", I mean FFS - if you have responsibilities of any kind you'd take what was available. She may love him but she's well rid.

Icantbelieveitsnotbutter · 22/07/2015 11:24

I don't understand why the Romanian family are entitled to any benefits.
I thought you needed to have lived here for a certain amount of time?

gamerchick · 22/07/2015 11:46

See work 6 days a week and live in a dangerous over crowded building with a scumbag landlord who suddenly wants more money and people bitch when they get given help they couldn't navigate themselves.

So people can sympathise and do sad faces as long as 'these people' stay exactly where they are in their suffering in other words.

mollyonthemove · 22/07/2015 13:00

^^ yes . I really felt for them They may be Rumanian but I would house them a hundred times over the hideous woman with the three kids and sadly dying father in law who clearly only wanted four beds so they could wait for him to die and get the kids in a bedroom each. Where exactly was her work ethic.

Blondeshavemorefun · 22/07/2015 16:34

molly i agree, i said last week that they could have moved into a 3 bed and all kids share or put youngest in with mum and dad, and grandad has own bedroom as he was dying of cancer so eventually would only need 3 bed, plus if my dad was that ill i would sleep on the sofa and let him have my bed
