How. Long did it take you to get into The Wire?

I'm determined to give it another go, fuelled by DW in The Affair. I almost know The Sopranos off by heart so I figure this will be easy for me. Except it isn't. It's the volume what's up with it? I can't put subtitles on because it's Sky box sets. Is it really that good? Should I preserver?

Never seen THe Sopranos or Breaking Bad & am not interested in doing so tbh.

Maybe that's why I couldn't get into The Wire.

Enjoyed Luther.

Does that slightly redeem me?Grin

I loved it right from the first episode and I didn't find the accents that difficult either. To be fair, it's probably the only series that's hooked me from the start and that I binged on.

i gave up- i tried 4 times
saw all of season 1
was ollocks compared to Mad Men

Probably my favourite piece of fiction - in any form- ever. Just incredibly layered, powerful, thought provoking stuff. It really changed my view of the world and my politics. Also, McNulty and the Bunk. Alone and together.

OriginalHugsy · 20/07/2015 21:09

Shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiitttt!
I just love the accents and you do need subtitles watching on sky.
It's definitely worth the watch

Crosbybeach · 20/07/2015 22:37

It was my favourite TV series ever (apart from Sherlock). But it's hard work to start with, but then brilliant. The guardian did some brilliant episode by episode blogging.

PyjamasLlamas · 20/07/2015 22:42

It is brilliant. But really hard work and just so horrendously heartbreaking at times. I would sometimes end up with crying headaches after watching it! The kids in the school series Sad

Another show which is unknown but amazing in the same vein is OZ about an American prison. That is hardcore! Punishing to watch but utterly compelling.

I watch a lot crappy fluffy tv to make up for itGrin

Fantasyland · 20/07/2015 23:04

It took me about 6 episodes to get into it but watching them twice
I hate programs glamorising drugs and violence but this shows the reality of life in poverty around drugs.

What I love about the wire is there is no happy ending for everyone , you end up rooting for people you wouldn't normally . I never in a million years think I'd be rooting for a drug addict ( bubs)

This isn't something you can watch and mumsnet at the same time you have to concentrate but it is worth it.

Glad someone else appreciates season 2 most people say it's the weakest but I really love the story around the frank sobotka

Fantasyland · 20/07/2015 23:05

Pyjamas yes to OZ another great show

DH and I just finished watching season 5 on Friday. I still feel bereft. This thread is making me want to go back and watch it from the beginning again.

OP, it took me a couple of episodes to get into it and get my ear in, but I'm SO glad I persevered. Give it another couple of episodes!

EachandEveryone · 04/08/2015 16:34

Ok. Last night I watched three in a row so something must have clicked. I'm up to episode 8 now. It's really heartbreaking to see such poverty and makes me think of Obama Care everytime. What a terrible way to live. Some of the characters don't look like they're acting but that they've been there. Tbh I don't know anything about the gang members may have to look it up.

I do need to wiki it after each one and have the volume up to full!
