Is anyone watching - if you like documentaries this is one of the best I've seen. It was on BBC 2 last night, tonight and tomorrow (all AT 9.00 pm) Should warn you though it's about how the police interview sex offenders, but there are no graphic scenes or anything of that nature.

If anyone saw tonight's episode - was it just me wondered why on earth that Ray Teret bloke kept walking around with paper or what looked like a face flannel in his mouth - weird of what. He is definitely guilty - I was amazed that he hadn't been remanded in custody, as we saw him walking up the court steps for the trial, which of course is now over, but I didn't see anything about it in the media. But then there's been so many of these historic sexual abuse crimes coming to light since Saville.

Felt SO sorry for Cathy who was still visibly shaken and sobbing so many years later after being raped by Teret when she was 12. Something that never goes away..............

Ah sorry, I read your post wrong. Yes, he was very emotional.

It was so well made. Finding the writing under the wallpaper was breathtaking.

I pictured rapists as being a certain type

Genuinely?

Absolutely fantastic series.

The writing underneath the wallpaper was absolutely incredible. It reminded me of a Patricia Cornwell book where there had been a murder in a house which had since been cleaned up. However blood obviously leaves a trace and they brought in a camera which could detect it - all light had to be blocked from the room and then the blood could be seen, so you could see where and how the murder had taken place. There must be moments like that in a detective's life where you just know you've got the person - it must be so satisfying.

I think that if the trial's still ongoing or if the person is found to be innocent then their faces are pixelated, but if they are found to be guilty they can be shown.

Re a PP's point about the guy phoning the police - I thought he'd done that because he knew he would be identified. I don't know how the jury could see the images of the complainant running around afterwards and not think something had happened to her.

ImperialBlether · 21/05/2015 12:38

Vivacia, I think we all know rapists exist in all guises but I have to say the first young man who raped that girl down the alley and the other one who was into 12 year olds wouldn't have fitted most people's idea of a rapist.

Jacana · 21/05/2015 12:42

Agree with blether, I think he was trying to pre-empt the accusations. Didn't work, tho, did itHmm

A small point. I liked the fact that the smoking detective was filmed with his cigarettes and, in fact, drawing heavily on one before going in to interview. A shot of real life being accurately portrayed.

ImperialBlether · 21/05/2015 12:52

It worked in the end, though, Jacana, as he was found innocent by the jury.

Did you think he looked under terrible stress and smoking was going to just make him really ill?

I've just watched all three of these today. Fantastic documentary.

They are exactly the sort of police who should be dealing with crimes of sexual violence. Not your average PC Plods. We need every police force to have a team like that.

Regarding the detective who got emotional, I think he'd been working on that case for a year, and struggled, then all of a sudden: Boom. He's got him.

Also agree with BMW about the young guy who raped the 13 year old, why didn't he think he was a monster? What was his thought process that made him think that what he did was not monstrous? Also sounded (from the call with his mum) that he had a girlfriend.

Rapists really are from every part of society. Sobering thought.
